Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of Religion on the Basis of Its History The question of the origin of religion, and of the nature of primitive religion, was not, as a rule, seriously taken up by the early philosophy of religion, nor made the subject of any thorough investi gation; in recent times, however, it has come to the front, and has become one of the burning questions of religious science. And this is as it should be. For the nature of a mental phenomenon such as religion, is only unfolded in the totality of its development in history, and can only be understood as a whole when its origin has been traced, and its springs laid bare. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Religious Philosophy This is an introduction of the religious philosophy on which the author has been working for years, being based upon the mathematically essential relation between the Infinite and the finite. It breaks the barrier separating science from religion and establishes a firm foundation on which can rest securely all that is true and good and permanent in every system of philosophy and of religion. While this treatise is mostly argumentative and theoretical, the principles herein established can be applied practically, not only towards the attainment of man's ultimate goal of infinity and perfection, but also in the ordinary affairs and interests of daily life. The practical side of the subject, with other important theoretical details, will be presented in the future. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the Christian Religion This book may be describe as an attempt to do two things: first, to explain religion through nature and; and, secondly, to consure Christianity through religion. The author conceives religion to be a joint product of the mind within man and the nature around him, the mind being the source of the ideas which constitute its soul, the nature around determining the usages and customs which build up its body. He does not think, therefore, that any one of its special forms can be explained without the local nature which begot and shaped it, or that its general being can be resolved and construed without the reason or thought which is common to the race. He sees in religion the greatest of all mans unconscious creations, and the most potent of the means which the past, while it was still a living present, formed for the making of the man and the times that were yet to be. The beliefs of the author are writ large on almost every page, and these he need neither explain nor justify here; but a word or two may be said as to the occasion which defined not so much the problem of the book as its scope and point of view. Some years ago he had the honour of being appointed by the University of Chicago lecturer on the Haskell foundation. The conditions of the endowment were that a certain number of lectures should be delivered in India, especially in the Presidency towns. Otherwise the writing of it should have been left to a philosopher, and that I do not pretend to be. Still, the ground covered lies between the two sub J ects (or, rather, over laps both) and might therefore be considered open to occupancy by students of either sub jcet. Theoretically, there is no reason why a philosopher's religious deductions should be any more reliable than the philosophical de scriptions of a student of religion, for just as philosophy has its intricacies so religion also has its subtleties, and the subtleties of religion can be caught only through that insight which is bestowed by an intimate historical under standing. In this task the application of philo sophical criteria may harm as well as help. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of a Philosophy of Religion The date, October, 1882, at which I find my wife began this task, soon pushed aside to make way for her translation of Scherer's History of German Literature, resumed after a while, but at the last left unfinished recalls the movement in favour of church reform tch was then astir in Oxford, and in which she felt a keen interest. Of that movement during its brief continuance Arnold Toynbee was the life and soul, and he it was who by his earnestness and eu thusiasm kindled in others sympathy with a scheme which, in its leading particulars, alas! Had but little chance Of success. Toynbee wished that the English Church might become in fact, what it is in theory, the very nation itself in a religious aspect. He saw and valued the actual comprehensiveness of the Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. A new and glorious science of man, of his origin and destiny, has been developed within the last few decades. A new philosophy has been evolved of human life here and hereafter, based upon demonstrated facts and data accessible to all. Stupendous as the science of objective nature has become, it is as the mere shadow thrown upon the canvas of time and matter by the radiant light of immortal spirit. Modern agnosticism had set up a way-mark on the road of human progression, inscribed: "No thoroughfare!" "Unknowable!" The truths most indispensable for man to know, the destiny of man and the immortality of the soul, were declared absolute mysteries. What ought to have merely been designated as unknown was declared to be unknowable. This way-mark has to be removed. It is now seen that the doctrine of the Relativity of Knowledge, as formulated by the Kantian school of modem philosophical thought, misled men into too hasty generalizations and unwarrantable conclusions. It needed only the right method to find the way out; it required only the right key to open wondrous realms to the astonished gaze. Again the supremacy of mind is restored; the saying is verified that "there is nothing on earth great but man, and in man there is nothing great but mind." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of Philosophy, the Unification of Knowledge The cultivated mind, whatever its antecedents, holds a judicial position. That is to say, the educated and thought ful members of society are looked to, to pass impartial judgments upon questions concerning the general welfare. This impartiality is particularly necessary in philosophy, for thought is hedged about with prejudices, and almost every man represents some logical sect or school which he feels it his duty to support.
