Book Synopsis Religion and the Christian Faith by : Hendrik Kraemer
Download or read book Religion and the Christian Faith written by Hendrik Kraemer and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 2003-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rich and profound contribution to the debate on the position of modern Christianity opened up Kraemer's The Christian Message in a Non-Christian World. In Religion and the Christian Faith he deals with many of the criticisms of his position, and offers an apologia, at once luminous and massive, of the Christian religion as the revelation of God to Man and the faith for all mankind. There is a decisive Christian finality about Kraemer's writing, and his book is a significant contribution to the sharp discipline of faith and action under which the universal Christian community lives. All the way through his formidably marshalled arguments run the undertones of Christian involvement in a real, world ' a world which, by his astonishing grasp of philosophy, Biblical theology and the claims of religion and religions, the Author brings alive to the reader. The reading of this formative book, with its strenuous demands on the reader's intelligence and Christian understanding, is a rewarding experience. Its significance for the Christian Church throughout the world is obvious, but it is also a monumental witness to the Christian religion for all those who ask not only for a faith 'once delivered' but a faith to believe in their own day and generation.

Book Synopsis The J. H. Bavinck Reader by : Johan Herman Bavinck
Download or read book The J. H. Bavinck Reader written by Johan Herman Bavinck and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Crucial themes and issues explored by a premier missiologist Johan Herman Bavinck (1895-1964) was a prominent twentieth-century Dutch Calvinist missiologist who wrestled with the tension between religious absolutism and relativism, as many Christians do in today's pluralistic context. The J. H. Bavinck Reader gathers together a choice selection of Bavinck's significant writings that are essential for understanding his theology of missions, his approach to world religions, and his religious psychology. His treatment of religious consciousness and Christian faith expands on the brief treatment of it in his own work The Church Between Temple and Mosque. The concluding chapters show how Bavinck's theoretical reflection on religious consciousness was rooted in his close observation during his years as a missionary in Indonesia. Offering a constructive way forward, Bavinck affirms both the particularity of salvation in Christ and the universality of the Christian hope. A substantial introduction enhances the book with the most thorough biographical sketch of Bavinck available.
Book Synopsis Jesus Christ, Hermeneutics, and Scripture by : Hans Burger
Download or read book Jesus Christ, Hermeneutics, and Scripture written by Hans Burger and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2024-04-18 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soteriology, not epistemology, is the best entrance to theological hermeneutics and to the doctrine of Scripture. The triune God uses Scripture to make the community of believers live in Christ. We hear the words of Scripture in the light of Easter and Pentecost. We understand Scripture from faith in Christ and with the mind of Christ. At the same time, we come to know Christ in Scripture and we receive the mind of Christ by reading Scripture. We remain in Christ by remaining in the Word. Understanding Scripture and Christlikeness mutually reinforce each other. Living a Christian life with God and our neighbor in God’s world will deepen our understanding of Scripture. This book explores the complex relationships between Jesus Christ, participation in Christ, theological hermeneutics, and the doctrine of Scripture. It shows the necessity of a holistic approach of life, knowledge, understanding, and renewal.

The essays focus on resp. France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, the USA, Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Indonesia, Japan, and China. Book Synopsis An Ethos of Compassion and the Integrity of Creation by : Brian J. Walsh
Download or read book An Ethos of Compassion and the Integrity of Creation written by Brian J. Walsh and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1995 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Ethos of Compassion and the Integrity of Creation addresses how to reconcile the lawful order seen in the world, which the Institute for Christian Studies takes as given by God, with the need for human compassion, also called for by God. The Institute sponsored this book in celebration of their twenty-fifth anniversary. An Ethos of Compassion and the Integrity of Creation opens with a study of parables relevant to today and closes with a meditation by Langdon Gilkey on the ideas brought forth in this book. A study of the history of the idea of 'creation order', central to the Institute's philosophical tradition, is followed by a controversial challenge suggesting how that philosophical tradition can be changed to give centrality to the viewpoint of compassion toward vulnerable people and the physical environment. Medical ethics, the environment, and gender chauvinism serve as case studies for issues of compassion and created order. Contributors: Atie Th. Book Synopsis Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion by : Jacques Waardenburg
Download or read book Classical Approaches to the Study of Religion written by Jacques Waardenburg and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 1999 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1973 (The Hague: Mouton) at a time when the field was blossoming; this edition includes a new preface. The book consists of two major parts. The first is an essay by Waardenburg, who was affiliated with the U. of Lausanne, Switzerland, following the rise and development of the academic study of religion in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The second is an anthology of articles about religion written by over 40 scholars in fields including psychology, sociology, philosophy, and anthropology. Waardenburg intended this book to be an examination of classical texts, and thus acknowledges that these authors often had a narrow approach to religion, ignoring anything not of European origin. Book Synopsis Roots and Routes by : Rachel Reedijk
Download or read book Roots and Routes written by Rachel Reedijk and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2010-01 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue participants demonstrate strong motivations for contributing to interreligious dialogue, based on a firm belief that encountering the other generates understanding - the contact thesis. Interreligious dialogue meets with both suspicion and cynicism: the former because it may result in loss of identity, and the latter because important issues may be ignored. The hitherto unanswered question is how Jewish-Christian-Muslim dialogue affects the identities of its participants. In this study Rachel Reedijk analyses identity construction in an interreligious context against the backdrop of the dominant either/or discourse regarding religious diversity - and, for that matter, multiculturalism - in Western society. The conceptual framework of this study is constituted by the debate on essentialism and constructivism in the social sciences. She argues that, under the right circumstances, interreligious dialogue can move beyond polemics and apologetics and prepare the ground for understanding in the dual sense of prejudice reduction and interreligious hermeneutics.

Book Synopsis 'For Their Rock is not as Our Rock' by : Daniel Strange
Download or read book 'For Their Rock is not as Our Rock' written by Daniel Strange and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2015-05-08 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reality of our post-Christendom, post-colonial, post-Holocaust, post-9/11, multi-ethnic and multicultural context has meant that, more than ever, Christians are acutely aware of the questions posed not simply by the existence of other religions, but also by their apparent flourishing. If secularization is still alive and well, then, seemingly, so too is society's sacralization. Hence, the theology of religions is arguably the issue for mission in the twenty-first century. However, there has been little evangelical theology that offers a detailed, comprehensive and biblically faithful analysis that deals with not only the question of salvation but also questions of truth, the nature and history of human religiosity, and a host of practical issues pertaining to apologetics and contextualization. In this ambitious interdisciplinary study, which synthesizes close exegesis, biblical theology, systematics and insights from the social sciences, Daniel Strange examines the origins, development and idolatry of the 'religious Other', and explores how the gospel of Jesus Christ is its 'subversive fulfilment'. He concludes with a missiological postscript and some pastoral perspectives on the purpose of other religions in God's providence.
Book Synopsis Revelation and Grace by : Philip Djung
Download or read book Revelation and Grace written by Philip Djung and published by Langham Monographs. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our globalized world, with its increasingly pluralistic societies, necessitates a theological framework that enables Christians to embrace their neighbors – with respect, understanding, and love – without compromising the essential components of their own faith. In Revelation and Grace, Dr. Philip Djung explores the ways in which Hendrik Kraemer’s theology of religions offers the church such a framework. By placing Kraemer in conversation with other twentieth-century Dutch Reformed theologians, namely Herman Bavinck, Johan H. Bavinck, and Abraham Kuyper, Dr. Djung allows the doctrine of revelation and grace to inform his interpretation of Kraemer’s work. He provides a critical assessment of Kraemer’s theology, illustrating the significance of Kraemer’s commitment to the uniqueness of Christ and the necessity of Christian mission, while advocating for the need to amend certain aspects of Kraemer’s perspective to more fully reflect God’s presence in world religions.
