Why is it that deterministic analysis has reached a very sophisticated level, but in the end empirical factors are still needed? Is there a way to select them, rather than assigning them arbitrarily as is often done? This book clearly shows that safety factors are closely related with the reliability of structures, giving yet another demonstration of Albert Einstein's maxim that "It is incomprehensible that Nature is comprehensible". The book shows that the safety factors are much more comprehensible if they are seen in a probabilistic context. Several definitions of the safety factors are given, analytical results on insightful numbers are presented, nonprobabilistic safety factors are shown, as well as their estimates derived by the inequalities of Bienayme, Markov, Chebushev and Camp-Meidell. A special chapter is devoted to important contributions by Japanese experts. This volume will help to critically re-think the issue of safety factors, which can create a false feeling of security. The deterministic paradigm can be enhanced by incorporating probabilistic concepts wisely where they are needed without treating all variables as probabilistic ones. The book shows that there is a need of their integration rather than separation. This book is intended for engineers, graduate students, lecturers and researchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maintaining the integrity of nuclear power plants is critical in the prevention or control of severe accidents. This monograph deals with both basic groups of structural materials used in the design of light-water nuclear reactors, making the primary safety barriers of NPPs. Emphasis is placed on materials used in VVER-type nuclear reactors: Cr-Mo-V and Cr-Ni-Mo-V steel for RPV and Zr-Nb alloys for fuel element cladding. The book is divided into 7 main chapters, with the exception of the opening one and the chapter providing a phenomenological background for the subject of radiation damage. Chapters 3-6 are devoted to RPV steels and chapters 7-9 to zirconium alloys, analysing their radiation damage structure, changes of mechanical properties due to neutron irradiation as well as factors influencing the degree of their performance degradation. The recovery of damaged materials is also discussed. Considerable attention is paid to a comparison of VVER-type and western-type light-water materials. This monograph will be of great value to postgraduate students in nuclear engineering and materials science, and for designers and research workers in nuclear energy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Space Science and Technology, Volume 8 presents the possibility that what is recognized as lunar cratering was caused by endogenous, volcanic activity rather than by the more widely accepted meteoritic impact mechanism. This book provides an introduction to the technology of rocketry. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of lunar volcanism and the interpretation of the widespread phenomenon of cratering. This text then provides a comprehensive examination of one of the major components of the solid propellant rocket. Other chapters consider the many problems associated with design, construction, and testing of motor cases of the solid propellant rocket. This book presents as well a thorough examination of interplanetary mission planning covering such vital elements as the process of mission decision making based on model theory. The final chapter deals with the exploration of the planet Mars. This book is a valuable resource for geoscientists, astronomers, and geologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When accidents occur in the oil and gas industry, the impacts can be profound. Serious injury or death to workers, environmental disasters and colossal costs for insurance or clean ups make the industry a hazardous one to operate in. Disasters become major news events such as the Prestige oil spill, Piper Alpha, Exxon Valdez oil spill and Deepwater Horizon. A move towards improving the health and safety of the industry is underway. This book emphasizes controlling, managing, and mitigating the risk of hazards in the oil and gas industry, increasing safety, and protecting the environment by identifying the hazards in the oil and gas industry through safety engineering techniques and management methods. Safety Engineering in the Oil and Gas Industry discusses how to improve safety and reliability in the oil and gas industry so that hazards can be reduced to the lowest level feasible. It covers the techniques needed to operate safely in an oil and/or gas industry setting, the standards that should be adhered to, the impacts of PPE, fire and explosions, equipment and infrastructure failures and storage and reliability engineering, amongst many other topics. This book is written in an easy-to-read and appealing style and multiple-choice questions are included to help with learning and understanding the concepts included. Underpinned by real life case studies and examples, this book aims to allow readers to consider how they can reduce the costs associated with bad safety practices to their business through maintained and consistent health, safety and environmental (HSE) standards. This book is a must-read for any student or professional studying or working in the oil and gas industries. It also has additional appeal to those with an academic or professional interest in occupational health and safety, civil engineering, offshore engineering and maritime engineering.

Book excerpt: The book develops the root-cause approach to reliability - often referred to as "physics of failure" in the reliability engineering field. It approaches the subject from the point of view of a process and integrates the necessary methods to support that process. The book can be used to teach first- or second-year postgraduate students in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing and materials engineering about addressing issues of reliability during product development. It will also serve practicing engineers involved in the design and development of electrical and mechanical components and systems, as a reference.
