Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. Haskell, Symposium Convenor & Vice President for Academic Services and Outreach, International Space University By taking "Space of Service to Humanity" as the theme for the inaugural event in its series of annual symposia, the International Space University (ISU) is asserting that this application of space technology requires special attention at this time. Future symposia will examine the issues of the day from different perspectives. In keeping with the fundamental principles of ISU, the symposium took a global perspective, as distinct from national or regional perspectives, and treated both technical and non-technical topics. Oral and poster presentations were delivered in the scientific, engineering, economic, legal, political and philosophical domains. All oral papers were delivered in plenary session to encourage cross fertilization between specialities, and posters were readily available for viewing throughout the three-day event. As an international and interdisciplinary forum for the sharing of experience and for discussion and debate, the symposium proved to be a stimulating and worthwhile event for the 135 participants from 25 countries and 5 international organizations with backgrounds in industry, government and academia.

Download or read book Beyond Mexico written by Jean Daudelin and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1995-03-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the North American Free Trade Agreement Canada's relations with Mexico and Latin America have reached a turning point both politically and economically. Beyond Mexico is a timely assessment of the dynamic state and the prospects of Canada's relations with Latin America. Every day, trade developments under nafta are redefining political, economic and social connections between Canada, Mexico and the United States. In this well-documented, policy-relevant and eminently accessible study, specialists address the challenges raised by non-governmental organizations, security and human rights issues, inter-municipal exchange programs, Canada's membership in the Organization of American States, and by successive crises in Haiti. This collection looks beyond NAFTA to explore the range and realities of Canada's involvement in the entire hemisphere.

Book Synopsis Brazil's Indians and the Onslaught of Civilization by : Linda Rabben
Download or read book Brazil's Indians and the Onslaught of Civilization written by Linda Rabben and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yanomami and Kayapó, two indigenous groups of the Amazon rainforest, have become internationally known through their dramatic and highly publicized encounters with “civilization.” Both groups struggle to transcend internal divisions, preserve their traditional culture, and defend their land from depredation, while seeking to benefit from the outside world, yet their prospects for the future seem very different. Placing each group in its historical context, Linda Rabben examines the relationship of the Kayapó and Yanomami to Brazilian society and the wider world. She combines academic research with a wide variety of sources, including celebrated leaders Paulinho Payakan and Davi Kopenawa, to assess how each group has responded to outside incursions. This book is a substantially revised edition of Unnatural Selection: The Yanomami, the Kayapó, and the Onslaught of Civilization, originally published in 1998, and includes a new chapter examining the controversy for anthropologists studying the Yanomami following the publication of Patrick Tierney’s book Darkness in El Dorado. Another new chapter focuses on the resurgence of Northeastern indigenous groups previously thought extinct. The magnitude and significance of indigenous movements has increased greatly, and a new generation of Brazilian indigenous leaders, proficient in Portuguese, is participating in the national political arena. Book Synopsis Participatory Democracy versus Elitist Democracy: Lessons from Brazil by : W. Nylen
Download or read book Participatory Democracy versus Elitist Democracy: Lessons from Brazil written by W. Nylen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Nylen begins by discussing North Americans' love-hate relationship with politics and politicians, then shows how Brazilians feel the same way (as do many citizens of democracies throughout the world). He argues that this is so because contemporary democracies have increasingly trickled up and away from so-called 'average citizens'. We now live in a world of 'Elitist Democracies' essentially constructed of, by and for moneyed, well-connected and ethically-challenged elites. Fortunately, there are alternatives, and that's where Brazil offers valuable lessons. Experiments in local-level participatory democracy, put into practice in Brazil by the Workers Party show both the promise and the practical limitations of efforts to promote 'popular participation' and citizen empowerment.
