Book excerpt: 3 Fluoride prevents caries by decreasing demineralization and promoting remineralization of enamel crystals during lesion formation and progression. The chemical, morphological, and histologic characteristics of teeth with fluorosis may alter the response of enamel to fluoride during the caries process. However, the effectiveness of fluoride in fluorosed teeth has not been thoroughly studied. Therefore, the current study utilized an in-vitro net remineralization model to study differences between fluorosed and sound enamel with regards to caries lesion remineralization and progression. Hypotheses: There is no significant difference in the effectiveness of fluoride to enhance caries lesion remineralization between fluorosed and non-fluorosed (sound) teeth after changes in enamel fluorescence relative to the lesion baseline. Objectives: The primary objective is to investigate the relative fluoride response of caries lesions created in sound and fluorosed teeth of varying severities under remineralizing conditions in vitro. Secondary objectives: a) To investigate the impact of the presence and severity of enamel fluorosis on caries lesion formation, and b) To investigate the acquired acid resistance of pH-cycled lesions relative to their fluorosis severity. Materials and Methods: Three hundred sixty (360) extracted human molars (sound and fluorosed) were collected and divided into four main groups based on their TF score (0; 1; 2; 3), with sample size of n = 45 per group. Each group was divided into two subgroups: no fluoride/placebo and fluoride/treatment. Artificial caries lesions were created on the teeth and pH-cycled for 20 days using a net remineralization model. The lesions were assessed to determine differences in acquired acid resistance. Quantitative light-induced fluorescence (QLF) was used throughout the study to determine changes in enamel fluorescence relative to a sound enamel window, thereby providing information about enamel de- or remineralization. The results of this study demonstrated that enamel fluorosis levels had a significant effect on lesion remineralization after pH cycling (p > 0.05). The teeth with moderate dental fluorosis had a significantly better response to remineralization and more resistance to a subsequent acid challenge than sound teeth in the presence of fluoride.

This book was released on 1971 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this dental caries clinical study was to determine the effect of multiple topical stannous fluoride therapy upon the rate of progression of carious lesions in two groups of young adults comparable in age to men entering the U.S. Army. The objectives of the laboratory studies were to examine tin and fluoride dynamics on freshly extracted bovine teeth having incipient carious lesions. Specifically, these studies were to investigate: (1) The amount of tin and fluoride uptake in carious enamel associated with multiple SnF2 therapy in extracted bovine teeth evaluated under conditions approximating those present in the clinical situation; (2) The relative contribution of each component of the multiple SnF2 therapy program with regard to tin and fluoride uptake in carious enamel; (3) The relative value of SnF2 treatment procedures which might increase still further the amount of tin and fluoride uptake in carious enamel; (4) The relative value of more efficient treatment procedures such as the use of a self-applied SnF2 prophylactic paste with regard to tin and fluoride uptake; and (5) The frequency of re-application required to maintain a maximal concentration of tin and fluoride in carious enamel. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work addresses a variety of topics that are of interest in their own right and because they bear on the evaluation of the safety of fluoridation. The latter is important because the demonstration of "no effect" from the use of fluorides is very difficult and the available data need to be periodically reexamined to reduce the theoretical amount

This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together current concepts relating to the use of fluoride in dentistry. In contributions written by expert authors, data from this large and complex field have been assembled into a clear sequence and presented in a lucid fashion. The first section deals with the sources of fluoride intake and its metabolism, in order to fully understand fluoride toxicity and the importance of monitoring intake. The second section focuses in more detail on modes of fluoride application and the mechanisms by which this ion interacts with the oral environment to cause a remarkable reduction in dental caries. The role of fluoride in the prevention of dental erosion is also elucidated. The complex mechanisms by which fluoride exerts its effects are described with clarity and the entire text is accompanied by particularly useful illustrations. As a clear up-to-date summary of current thinking in the field, this book will be essential reading for research workers and postgraduate students. Established researchers and teachers in both clinical and basic sciences will find it to be a valuable addition to their libraries, and clinicians will be able to better evaluate the current scientific evidence on the advantages as well as the hazards of fluoride in dentistry.
