Book excerpt: Understanding the controls on the distribution and type of hydrothermal venting in modern oceanic spreading environments is key to developing tools for exploration and understanding the metallogeny of ancient massive sulfide deposits. Compared to mid-ocean ridges, subduction zones are characterized by additional tectonic complexities, including arc-ridge collisions, arc rotations, pre-existing structures, and variable distances to the arc. This thesis addresses the question, "How do tectonic complexities associated with subduction influence the structure and volcanic evolution of a back-arc basin, and how do they affect the distribution and type of hydrothermal venting?" A multi-scaled approach was used to address this question in the nascent back-arc region of the New Hebrides and in the more advanced stages of opening of the Mariana back-arc basin. In the New Hebrides, an arc-ridge collision segmented the volcanic front and affected the southern and northern back-arc regions in different ways. In the southern Coriolis Troughs (CT), voluminous eruptions are closely linked to the ridge collision, forming a large shield volcano in the near-arc region (Nifonea Volcano). The caldera-hosted eruptions produced high-temperature but short-lived magmatic-hydrothermal activity restricted to the shield volcano. In the northern Jean Charcot Troughs (JCT), ridge collision caused a reversal in the rotation of the arc, reducing extension in the south and increasing extension in the north. Unlike the CT, extension in the JCT is strongly affected by pre-existing structures, which form irregular widely-spaced grabens and volcanic ridges and magmatism in the central part of the back-arc. Here, hydrothermal venting is focused along deeply penetrating faults, associated with widespread tectonic extension. Detailed studies of the mineralogy and geochemistry of the ore and alteration at the Tinakula deposit reveal that massive sulfide accumulation in the region dominated by tectonic extension is characterized by longer-lived, lower-temperature venting than at Nifonea. Hydrothermal activity in the JCT at Tinakula is dominated by (1) long-lived heat from an underlying magma source; (2) fluid circulation along a fissure with long-lived or reactivated permeability; (3) enrichment in fluid-mobile elements such as Ba that are transported at low temperature; (4) mixing of cold seawater with hydrothermal fluids within the permeable volcaniclastic substrate and at the seafloor; (5) water depth controls on maximum hydrothermal vent temperatures; and (6) reduced permeability of the host volcaniclastic succession at the site of mineralization caused by precipitation of alteration minerals and sulfates, focusing fluid flow. The different styles of volcanic and hydrothermal activity closely resemble those of mid-ocean ridge environments in areas that are dominated by tectonic rather than magmatic extension. A comparison with the more advanced stages of rifting and segmentation of the Mariana back-arc demonstrates that Mid-Ocean Ridge (MOR)-type structural and magmatic controls on hydrothermal activity are important during all stages of back-arc basin evolution. This work highlights the diversity of volcanic eruption styles and hydrothermal venting from the earliest stages of back-arc rifting to the advanced stages of basin opening and shows that processes normally associated with MOR-type spreading are directly analogous to back-arc basin systems. However, additional tectonic complexities (e.g., ridge-arc collisions) have a major impact on the location and type of magmatic and hydrothermal activity at back-arc spreading centers, with important implications for understanding ancient volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits that mainly formed in back-arc basins.

Book excerpt: This study is a multidisciplinary data integration and metadata analysis for mid-ocean ridge (MOR) and Mariana intra oceanic convergent margin hydrothermal vents including fluids and biota. We compiled separate databases for MOR and Mariana hydrothermal vent parameters and their vent biota using published and on-line information managed by government agencies and other research institutes. The vent parameter databases are compiled under the categories of setting, vent field name, vent field number, name, latitude, longitude, alias, vent sites, smoker type and chimney composition, host rocks, full spreading rate, depth, temperature, pH, total Fe, (3He/4He)/Ra, CO2, CH4, H2, H2S, SO4 2- ions, chlorinity, operations and references. MOR database for vent parameters includes 449 individual hydrothermal vents grouped into 73 vent fields at global divergent margins. The vent organism database of MOR vents includes 672 species belong to 72 individual vents. Mariana vent summary database includes 47 individual hydrothermal vents belong to four different tectonic settings: the forearc (FAR), arc (ARC), backarc (BAB) and the southern Mariana trough (SMT). Database for Mariana biota include vent animals for 31 vents of the above settings. We considered vent depth, fluid temperature, pH, total Fe, Mn, helium isotopic ratio ((3He/4He)/Ra), fluid gases (CO2, CH4, H2, H2S), SO4 2- ions and chlorinity of the fluids for statistical analysis. In addition to these parameters, for MOR vents full spreading rate was also considered for statistical analysis. To overcome non-linear data distributions and small number of observations for some vent parameters, we used purely nonparametric statistical procedures. We assessed vent fluid parameters first for correlations with key parameters spreading rate (for MOR only), summit depth, fluid temperature and fluid chlorinity. Second, we compared different segments (MOR segments and Mariana tectonic settings) based on vent parameters. Similarities between the vent organisms in different tectonic segments were assessed using Sörensen similarity indices; for MOR vents at both genera and species levels; and for Mariana only for genus level. Our results for MORs show that even if MOR hydrothermal systems are associated with simple divergent margin tectonism, they are remarkably similar despite having differences in both fluid chemistry and biota distribution regardless of the ocean and the rate of spreading. Vent fluid temperature, pH, Fe, Mn, CO2, H2, SO4 2- ion and chlorinity are independent of the spreading rate. Fluid temperature does control pH, Fe and H2S. Brine separation might influence gases such as helium isotopic ratio and CO2 in venting fluids. Highest similarities of the macro organisms are seen in the Indian Ocean ridges and the greatest differences are observed in the Pacific Ocean ridges. Integration of tectonics, fluid chemistry and vent biota of Mariana convergent margin vents demonstrate that Mariana vent groups are more diverse than global mid-ocean ridge vents and that the southernmost Marianas most resembles mid-ocean ridge (MOR) type venting, the other tectonic groups are quite different than MOR vents.

Vents are home to luxuriant assemblages of animals that colonize the warm venting fluids. High biomass is fed by microbes that use hydrogen sulphide and other reduced chemicals in the vent fluid as an energy source to fix inorganic carbon. Individual vents may persist for a few years to several decades. The specialized animals must find new vents, cope with changing fluid conditions and foster their offspring. The composition and structure of vent communities vary in space and time. My research at Axial Volcano, a seamount on the Juan de Fuca Ridge (JdFR) in the northeast Pacific, aims to find pattern in this variation and to propose viable hypotheses of the mechanisms driving the patterns. Axial is an ideal location as it supports mature vent fields (venting for over 15 years) and young, developing vents initiated by a volcanic eruption in 1998. Thus, I was able to study both temporal and spatial variation in vent communities at the same site and relate patterns of developing assemblages to patterns observed at longer-lived vents. Pattern detection is the first critical step in any community ecology study as it justifies and focuses the search for process. I have refined existing statistical methods and developed novel techniques to test for pattern in vent species distributions and abundances. I modified an existing null model approach and showed that species distributions among sixteen vents differ from random in a long-lived (>15 years) vent field. I also developed a novel null model to confirm that initial patterns of community assembly seven months following the Axial eruption differ from random recruitment of species and individuals to new vents. My description of the community response to the Axial eruption is the first quantitative report of patterns of vent colonization and succession. My work documents that new vents are colonized quickly (within months) and that initial assemblages are variable. However, rapid community transitions and species replacements within the first few years cause new assemblages to resemble mature vents by 2.5 years post-eruption. Three habitat factors correlate with the development of nascent vent assemblages: the recruitment timing of the tubeworm Ridgeia piscesae post-eruption, vent age and vent fluid hydrogen sulphide content. I also describe a new polynoid polychaete discovered colonizing the new vents in high densities. My major contribution to vent community ecology is revealing species patterns through extensive sampling and rigorous statistical methods. These patterns are a necessary step towards understanding the processes that structure vent communities: they direct future research effort towards the key species and generate hypotheses to be experimentally tested. My work also elucidates how vent species respond to habitat destruction and creation, which is critical information for effectively managing Canada's only hydrothermal vent Marine Protected Area on the JdFR.
