Book Synopsis Labour Relations for Shop Stewards by : Chris Hickley
Download or read book Labour Relations for Shop Stewards written by Chris Hickley and published by Siber Ink. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labour relations and law at a basic level are an extremely important part of the knowledge-set of any competent shop steward, but most books written on the subject are aimed at a different market, and in language, complexity and bias are not suited for easy consumption by shop stewards. In eight chapters, Chris Hickley provides the basic knowledge that a shop steward requires to be adequately informed about key labour relations principles and issues. This book will not turn the shop steward into an overnight lawyer or immediate expert, but it will:Equip him or her with the important overview of labour relations required to fulfil his or her shop steward's duties;Provide a good understanding of the key concepts and principles of labour relations / law;Empower him or her to be a better shop steward and better representative of workers' interests;Add authority and confidence to Trade Union performance;Promote good labour relations in the workplace by providing key knowledge to key players.Additionally, the book will: Explain the disciplinary process and define the roles of all the key players;Address the issues of sexual harassment, protected disclosures, employment equity principles and dismissals in a simplified manner that is very easy for any shop steward to understand;Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of being a shop steward and offer encouragement;Build capacity and provide guidance for shop stewards to function more effectively and efficiently;Assist in training and developing both experienced and newly elected shop stewards; In short, each and every shop steward should really have a copy of this book that was specifically written for them. The book not only provides real value for money in comparison with costly training, but crucially, it gives the shop stewards a lasting resource on which they can depend and to which they can turn again and again for guidance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1971 The Nylon Spinners presents one of the few detailed and firsthand studies of the impact of productivity bargaining on the shop floor and makes an important contribution to the social and psychological understanding of human behaviour. Productivity bargaining has moved far beyond its earlier preoccupation with the wage-effort bargain. It is becoming increasingly apparent that it may have profound direct effects on the attitudes and expertise of managers, on the institutions and climate of industrial relations, and on the motivations and satisfactions of operatives. The problems of industrial relations are not the primary focus of this study. But the growing recognition of the gap between the formal and informal systems on the shop floor, and of the limitations of managerial control, emphasizes the importance of a deeper understanding of industrial behaviour. What motivates men not simply to go to work but to work to the best of their ability? This book is essential for students of the behavioral sciences, industrial relations, labour economics and economics in general.

Book Synopsis Air Transport Labor Relations by : Robert W. Kaps
Download or read book Air Transport Labor Relations written by Robert W. Kaps and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert W. Kaps examines air transport labor law in the United States as well as the underlying legislative and policy directives established by the federal government. The body of legislation governing labor relations in the private sector of the U.S. economy consists of two separate and distinct acts: the Railway Labor Act (RLA), which governs labor relations in the railroad and airline industries, and the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), which governs labor relations in all other industrial sectors. Although the NLRA closely follows the pattern established by the RLA, Kaps notes that the two laws are distinguishable in several important areas. Labor contracts negotiated under the RLA continue in perpetuity, for example, whereas all other labor contracts expire at a specified date. Other important areas of difference relate to the collective bargaining process itself, the procedures for the arbitration of disputes and grievances, and the spheres of authority and jurisdiction to consider such matters as unfair labor practices. Congress established a special labor law for railroad and airline workers for several reasons. Because of transportation’s critical importance to the economy, an essential goal of public policy has been to ensure that both passenger and freight transportation services continue without interruption. Production can cease—at least temporarily—in most other industries without causing significant harm to the economy. When transportation stops, however, production stops. Thus Congress saw fit to enact a statute that contained provisions to ensure that labor strife would not halt rail services. Primarily because of the importance of air mail transportation, the Railway Labor Act of 1926 was extended to the airline industry in 1936. The first section of this book introduces labor policy and presents a history of the labor movement in the United States. Discussing early labor legislation, Kaps focuses on unfair labor practices and subsequent major labor statutes. The second section provides readers with a comparison of labor provisions that apply to the railroad and airline industries as well as to the remainder of the economy. The final section centers on the evolution of labor in the airline industry. The author pays particular attention to recent events affecting labor in commercial aviation, particularly the effect of airline deregulation on airline labor.
