Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This annotated bibliography contains over 700 references which deal with: (1) effects, direct and indirect, of forest management practices on nongame forest birds, covering such topics as logging, cut types, rotation periods, thinning, site preparation, plantations, pesticides, herbicides, burning and regeneration: (2) forest bird-habitat relationships in both natural and sites disturbed by forestry operations or other practices which would produce similar situations; (3) factors affecting species diversity and biogeography distributions; (4) the role of birds in the forest ecosystem; and (5) management and conservation considerations for nongame forest birds, and sorne related techniques. The emphasis was placed on migratory songbirds in the boreal forest area. However, since few studies have investigated the effects of forestry practices on this category of birds in the boreal region, information was included for a variety of habitat types from aIl over North America, and a few from other regions. It was hoped that the findings and management considerations in these papers would provide usefuI information, and that some of the trends observed could be applied to the boreal region"--Abstract, p. iii.

Book Synopsis Breeding Bird Communities in Aspen Forests of the Sub-boreal Spruce (dk Subzone) in the Prince Rupert Forest Region by : Rosamund A. Pojar
Download or read book Breeding Bird Communities in Aspen Forests of the Sub-boreal Spruce (dk Subzone) in the Prince Rupert Forest Region written by Rosamund A. Pojar and published by Research Branch, Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 1995 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reports a two-year study initiated to examine the diversity of bird communities in different seral stages of the aspen ecosystem at the western end of the dry cool subzone of the sub-boreal spruce zone of the Prince Rupert Forest Region, British Columbia. Breeding birds were chosen for the study since they tend to stay within a relatively confined area once in their territories and are hence easier to count. The study also had the objective of identifying management indicator species that could represent the diversity of most birds likely to be affected by aspen management. Birds were counted by a modified point count method for clearcuts, sapling aspen stands, mature aspen stands, old aspen stands with century-old trees, and mixed aspen-conifer stands. Data were analyzed using a detrended correspondence analysis ordination procedure, and habitat relationships of the 16 most abundant species were analyzed by multiple regression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of Mixed Severity Fires: Nature’s Phoenix focuses on wildfire as a keystone ecological process that has shaped plant and animal communities for over 400 million years. The book will describe the renewal process that follows wildfires in forests and chaparral ecosystems as "nature’s phoenix" by drawing from examples of wildfire effects in several regions of the world. In addition, the book will describe management and policies that have contributed to wildfire problems, including climate change and land-use practices incompatible with nature’s phoenix and what must happen to get to coexistence with wildfires that are not going away no matter how much we try to suppress or alter fire behavior. This second edition of Mixed Severity Fires: Nature’s Phoenix provides a comprehensive reference for documenting and synthesizing fire's ecological role. Comprehensive and complete reference on wildfire ecology that includes the latest science and citations Debunks debates on wildfire management that can be used by conservation groups and decision-makers to shift egregious wildfire policies Contains a broad synthesis of the ecology of mixed- and high-severity fires, covering such topics as vegetation, birds, mammals, insects, aquatics, and management actions
