Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis, (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 19 (thesis year 1974) a total of 10,045 theses titles from 20 Canadian and 209 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 19 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses factors influencing trace element distribution in rocks, tabulates maximum and minimum concentrations of twenty-nine trace elements in various common rock types, and briefly describes the geochemical behavior of each of these elements. A procedure is outlined for predicting concentrations of these selected elements in various rock types. On the basis of this study it is concluded that: 1. Trace element concentration varies systematically according to the gross mineralogical composition of the host rock. 2. Mineralogical composition of the host rock is the primary determinant of trace element concentrations. 3. Knowledge of rock mineralogy as provided by conventional petrographic analyses serves as a basis for estimating trace element concentrations.

Book excerpt: "Alkaline rocks associated with epithermal gold telluride and porphyry copper-precious metal deposits occur throughout the cordillera, yet the trace element chemistry of these systems is poorly documented. Some alkaline rock systems may form a vertical continuum with near-surface gold telluride deposits occurring above deep copper-precious metal porphyries. Rocks from four areas of precious metal and copper - precious metal mineralization associated with alkaline rocks were analyzed for Ag, Au, Ba, Cu, F, K, Rb, Sr, Te, and Tl. The areas studied ranged from high level gold telluride veins to low level syenite hosted copper-precious metal porphyries. Variations in trace element content were observed in the unmineralized rocks associated with mineralization which could be useful in identification of potentially mineralized systems. Ag, Cu, F, and Tl show significant variation with depth; Cu and Ag increase with depth while F and Tl decrease with depth. Tellurium is enriched throughout these systems and probably plays a significant role in the mineralizing process. The metals Ag, Au and Cu are enriched 5 to 20 times and Te 10 to 50 times crustal abundance in alkaline rocks associated with mineralization. Alkaline plutons with Cu> 30ppm, Ag> 0.2 ppm, Au> 10 ppb and Te> 0 .1 ppm are capable of producing metal deposits. Complexing of gold and other metals in the deep copper porphyry systems is most probably by chloride complexes in high salinity solutions with temperatures of 400°C or greater. Deposition of metals may occur very quickly with rapid changes in pressure or by dilution and cooling associated with mixing with meteoric water. Complexing of gold and other metals in the upper level precious metal-rich epithermal alkaline rock-related systems is most probably by thiosulfide or tellurothio ions. Cooling, oxidation, decreasing pH due to exsolved CO2, dilution and decomposition of complexes are probably factors controlling metal deposition. In the high level systems K/Tl, Rb/Sr, and Te correlate most strongly with Au and Ag mineralization. In the low level systems Ba/Tl, BajRb, Rb/Sr, K/Tl, and Te correlate well with Cu mineralization, with Ba/Tl, BajRb, and Te correlating best with Au and Ag mineralization"--Document.
