Book excerpt: ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between strength and power measures with sprint freestyle performance in Division 1 collegiate swimmers. Ten male subjects with an average age of 20.1 years (SD = 2.2) and eight female subjects with an average age of 19.4 years (SD = 1.3) participated in the study. The subjects performed a maximal-effort 45.72-meter freestyle swim test, a one-repetition-maximum (1-RM) weighted pull-up test, a non-countermovement jump (NCMJ), and a barbell back squat velocity test. The data distributions were normalized by creating Z-scores for each variable measured and the sum of the three-dryland tests The data were analyzed using Pearson product-moment correlation analysis. The results showed an inverse association between the sum of the three-dryland performance Z-scores and the 45.72-meter sprint swim time (r = -0.77, p

Book excerpt: Sport-specific resistance training relies on applying resistance to the same motions used in a sport's competition movements. Resisted swimming offers the opportunity to measure training variables used by coaches under an optimal force-velocity relationship. The purpose of this shtdy was to determine the relationship between kinetic and kinematic variables observed during resisted swimming and sprint performance. Three trials were conducted during weeks 1,6, and 12 (TI, T2, and T3) of the competitive season. During each trial week, a 45.72-m maximal effort freestyle sprint was used as a performance test. Two days later, 22.86-m resisted swim trials were performed against a predetermined resistance while recording and averaging time, strolce count, and stroke rate. A tethered swim test was used to determine peak force, average force, and the fatigue index of a maximal 30-sec maximum swim effort. A product-movement correlation determined the relationships of all variables to performance. The results show that peak and mean force were most strongly correlated to performance across all trials and genders. For coaches and athletes using resisted swimming, taking simple measurements of common training variables may provide some insight into the performance enhancing value of the training program being implemented.

Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming, held every four years under the aegis of the International Society of Biomechanics and the World Commission of Sports Biomechanics, provides a forum in which research related to swimming is reported and problems that confront swimming practitioners are debated. This volume contains the papers presented at the sixth symposium. The keynote addresses covered lactate metabolism, performance determining factors and the analysis of sprint swimming. The contributed papers range widely across sports science, coaching and training and sports medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amount and intensity of training a subject enters into will impact athletic performance. Previous studies have demonstrated that fitness and fatigue achieved during training will impact performance. This study compared the subject's performance in time trials to the subject's level of fitness minus the level of fatigue (Fit-Fat) as calculated for each subject. Twelve male and twenty-four female swimmers (n = 36) volunteered to participate in eleven weeks of varied intensity and duration training sessions while performing 100 yard time trials at the end of each training phase. Subjects' percent improvements on the time trial (NormTT) were compared to the Fit-Fat of each swimmer during each training phase. At the end of the seven week general endurance phase (GETT) a 0.205 correlation was observed between the two variables with p = 0.229. The increased loading phase (ILTT) yielded a 0.159 correlation with p = 0.355 while the decreased loading phase (DLTT) yielded a 0.201 correlation with 0 = 0.254. Subjects averaged during the GETT a Fit-Fat of -47.417and a 2.563 percent faster NormTT. Average values during the ILTT were Fit-Fat of -80.028 and a 1.825 percent faster Normr1T' and during the DLTT a Fit-Fat of 220.861 with a 4.260 percent faster NormTT. Mean NonnTT for the DLTT proved to be significantly faster than the mean NormTT for the GETT and ILTT (p
