The fact that the various contributors were able to assemble at all was very much due to the kind generosity of the Scientific Affairs Board of the BPS, which had made resources available from its Initiatives Fund to enable Barbara Sommer to travel to the United Kingdom to participate in the event. The broad continuity among the contributions to this symposium in terms of their underlying themes led us to the view that a single volume consisting of original papers by those concerned would be a timely contri bution to the research literature, not simply on menstruation and cognitive performance but more generally on the nature of female psychology. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of sex hormones on non-reproductive behavior and cognitive abilities in younger women. The current project included the examination of the effects of estrogen on cognitive performance during the midluteal and menses phase of menstruation. Specifically, we (a) examined whether oral contraceptives affect cognitive performance and depressive symptomology during these two phases (b) examined whether differences in performance levels occur between women who use oral contraceptives and women who take a natural course of menstruation, and (c) whether other cognitive functions, such as memory, information processing, and mood are affected by estrogen during both phases of menses. The researchers used a repeated measures design to test younger women (n=6 women who used some form of hormonal influence, n=31 women who do not use any method of hormonal influence) with a normal functioning menstrual cycle (28-32 days) using Vandenberg's Mental Rotation Task, the Stroop, the Stress Arousal Checklist, the California Verbal Learning Test, and the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression Scale during both phases of menstruation. A multivariate analyses of variance was conducted and showed a main effect in assessment measures, however we found no main effect in phase or the interaction of assessment and phase. A paired samples t-test showed a marginally significant result with the stress arousal checklist, specifically negative arousal. This study seems to imply that neither the phase of estrogen in women, nor the level of estrogen can be directly linked to cognitive performance.

Book excerpt: The combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) is the most common method of hormonal birth control for U.S. women, and there is a growing body of literature investigating hormone-related effects on cognition. Much of the research suggests that verbal memory and visuospatial functioning improve with COCPs in comparison to the natural menstrual cycle (MC). Hormonal variations during the natural MC have also been shown to impact cognition, with periods of high sex hormones (i.e., luteal phase) associated with improved verbal memory, and periods of low sex hormones (i.e., follicular phase) associated with improved visuospatial abilities. We analyzed group differences in cognitive performance using two separate designs: (a) discordant siblings and (b) demographics-matched groups. Overall, visuospatial functioning did not differ as a result of MC phase or COCP use. However, verbal memory scores were significantly higher for women during the follicular phase than during the luteal phase, contrary to expectations.

Although all Ss improved with practice, non-users exhibited continued significantly superior performance over 40 practice trials and 36 test trails spanning 12 days. Based on research suggesting relationships between cognitive performance and the menstrual cycle and between thermoregulation and the menstrual cycle we hypothesized that the cycle might be a significant moderator variable in a study of the effects of heat and chemical protective clothing on the ability of female soldiers to sustain performance of a number of cognitive tasks. Unfortunately, the distribution of menstrual cycles obtained was too skewed to be useful and the hypothesis could not be tested. However, information was available on the participants' use of oral contraceptives (The Pill), and a retrospective analysis was done on the relationship between The Pill and performance of the cognitive tasks and of a perceptual-motor task also included in the study. In the current research, I integrate social cognitive, evolutionary, and neuroendocrinological theories to generate and test predictions about how female affiliative motives shift naturally across women's menstrual cycles and how these shifts relate to functional changes in attention. Consistent with a social monitoring system hypothesis, during the luteal phase of their cycle, normally cycling women, but not women on oral contraceptives, displayed greater attentional attunement to social stimuli than non-social stimuli. Moreover, attention to social stimuli was associated with normally cycling women's levels of progesterone - a hormone closely tied to affiliative motivation. The current research suggests that endocrinological mechanisms are functionally linked with lower-order cognitive processes designed to help foster positive social relationships.

Book excerpt: This research topic aims to integrate scattered findings on sex differences in neuroscience into a broader theory of how the human brain is shaped by sex and sex hormones in order to cause the great variety of sex differences that are commonly observed. It can be assumed that these differences didn’t occur arbitrarily, but that they rather determined and still determine evolutionary success of individuals and were shaped by the processes of natural and in particular sexual selection. Therefore, sex differences are not negligible and sex difference research cannot be discriminating against one sex or the other. In fact a better understanding of the underlying causes of sex differences has great advantages for both men and women and society as a whole, not only in terms of health care, but in every aspect of life. Gender equality can only work out if it is equally well understood for men and women what their individual resources and needs are. Therefore, it is of great importance to pave the way for identifying the underlying principles of structural and functional brain organization that cause men and women to act, think and feel differently. To this end it is of particular interest to identify possible similarities and interrelations between sex differences that did so far stand separately, in order to investigate whether they share a common source. To understand, where a specific sex difference comes from and whether or not it is caused by the same principle as other sex differences, it is necessary to explicitly link sex differences in behavior to their neuronal correlates and vice versa link sex differences in brain structure and function to their behavioral outcomes. In particular a new understanding of male and female brain functioning may arise from findings on how sex hormones interact with various neurotransmitter systems. In the past few years several findings demonstrated that women’s behavior is influenced by the sex hormone fluctuations they experience naturally during their menstrual cycle to the extent that sex differences may only be detectable in one cycle phase but not another. The study of menstrual cycle dependent effects gives important hints about which sex differences are activational and which are organizational. Additionally it only recently came to attention, that hormonal contraception may alter a women’s mood, cognition and behavior as a consequence of changes in brain structure and function. The underlying mechanisms are so poorly understood that it is even hard to predict, whether hormonal contraception will mask or amplify sex differences in a given task. Since the oral hormonal contraceptive pill is meanwhile used by 100 million women worldwide and even by teenagers whose brains are not yet fully developed, the question of how the synthetic steroids contained in hormonal contraceptives act on the brain is to be studied hand in hand with naturally occurring sex differences. This topic summarizes the current state of the art in sex difference research and gives new perspectives in terms of hypothesis generation an methodology. Both are necessary to gain a complete picture of what it is that makes a brain male or female and move towards a neuroscience of sex differences.

The impact of caffeine consumption on various aspects of health, including cardiovascular disease, reproduction, bone mineral density, and fluid homeostasis are reviewed. The behavioral effects of caffeine are also discussed, including the effect of caffeine on reaction to stress, withdrawal effects, and detrimental effects of high intakes. The amounts of caffeine found to enhance vigilance and reaction time consistently are reviewed and recommendations are made with respect to amounts of caffeine appropriate for maintaining alertness of military personnel during field operations. Recommendations are also provided on the need for appropriate labeling of caffeine-containing supplements, and education of military personnel on the use of these supplements. A brief review of some alternatives to caffeine is also provided.

Book excerpt: The present study examined behavioural and neurophysiological effects of caffeine on cognition across menstrual cycle phases. Sixty healthy females with hormonally-mediated menstrual cycles (i.e. using combination oral contraceptives) between the ages of 18-40 participated in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized study. Participants were tested during their menstrual or combination hormonal contraceptive (HC) active cycle phase. Saliva hormone testing was used to confirm menstrual cycle phase. Participants took a caffeine or placebo pill in counterbalanced order before the completion of a visual search task while EEG was recorded. ANCOVAs were used to examine the effects of menstrual phase and drug on behavioural (RT, accuracy) and neurophysiological (amplitude, latency of ERP waveforms previously elicited in visual search tasks; the N2pc and P300) outcome measures. Spearman's rho was used to examine correlations between hormone levels and caffeine-induced changes for outcome measures. Behavioural results revealed that caffeine improved accuracy but slowed reaction time to targets in the combination HC active phase only. EEG results showed no phase or drug effects on P300 outcome measures. In the caffeine condition, N2pc amplitudes at the parietal occipital region to distractor arrays were significantly larger compared to the placebo condition; this pattern reversed for target arrays. These results suggest a potential reallocation of attention from target to distractor stimuli during the combination HC active cycle phase to maintain task efficiency. Findings contribute to a better understanding of the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying the effects of caffeine on cognition across menstrual cycle phases, which have implications for hormonal birth control as well as hormone therapies for transgender and post-menopausal women.
