Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of acculturation, socioeconomic status (SES), and self-rated health on the psychological distress among Latino American adults, and to acknowledge possible consequences for social work practice and policy. It was hypothesized that poverty and educational attainment would also have significant impacts on Latino American adult population. This study was a quantitative report using secondary data gathered from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS) 2013-2014, Adult Survey. A sample population of Latino American adults between 18 and 65 years old was extracted (n = 4,538) from the CHIS. Descriptive and parametric inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The outcomes demonstrated that factors such as acculturation, health condition, health insurance coverage, SES, education attained, gender, and age had a statistically significant relationship concerning health and psychological distress among the Latino American adult population. Social workers should be aware of the findings to appropriately help clients who belong to this particular community. Health professionals and policy makers should work in partnership to develop preventive programs and interventions to address the issues affecting this population.

Hispanics whom have immigrated to our country make up a substantial part of our population and are likely experiencing the acculturation process. The immigrant paradox suggests that in spite of the low socioeconomic status experienced by many acculturating Hispanics, physical health and mortality outcomes are better than those of non- Hispanic whites. However, studies looking at the relationship between acculturation and mental health have been less clear. Numerous studies on acculturation have shown inconsistent results, some of which point to acculturation and positive mental health outcomes and others that point to acculturation and negative mental health outcomes. Some researchers suggest that having a bicultural identity, that is, identifying with both one's origin and host culture smoothes the acculturation process and is a protective factor against negative mental health outcomes. Risk factors exist as well, particularly perceived discrimination, which can increase stress levels related to acculturation and negatively impact mental health. This study uses data collected from the MUSIC study to analyze the relationship between ethnic and American identities, discrimination, and depression among college students. Results revealed no relationship between ethnic and American identities and depression; however, discrimination was significantly related to depression among Hispanics. The experience of discrimination was also found to be worse for Hispanic men than Hispanic women.

The independent variables examined in this study were acculturation, socio-economic status, and gender. The dependent variable is access to health care. This study utilized secondary data obtained from the California Health Interview Survey (CHIS), which included 9,506 Latino adults ages 18 years and above that were interviewed. The results revealed that Latino adults regardless of gender, who reported higher levels of acculturation were more likely to have access to care. In regards to gender, Latino men who reported lower levels of socio-economic status and acculturation presented with greater barriers in access to care compared to women. The findings may be beneficial in providing awareness and increase advocacy efforts among those in the helping professions in order to reduce barriers and increase access to care among Latino adults living in the United States.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine how enculturation, acculturation, and familismo influence Latina/os' psychological well-being. A limited amount of studies have integrated enculturation, acculturation and familismo in their research designs to explore moderator and meditational hypotheses. Participants were 401 Latina/os who reside in the Southwest and Pacific Northwest of the United States and who are of Mexican heritage. Participants were recruited from the community, universities, and community colleges. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Attitudinal Familism Scale (AFS; Steidel & Contreras, 2003), the Pan-Hispanic Familism Scale (PHFS; Villareal, Blozis, and Widaman, 2005), the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (ARSMA-II; Cuellar et al., 1995), the Latina/o Values Scale (LVS; Kim et al., 2009), and the Psychological Well-Being--Short Scale (PWBSS; Van Dierendonck, 2005 and Diaz et al., 2006). Participants had the option to complete instruments in English or Spanish. Results for Hypothesis 1 was not supported and indicated that enculturation did not moderate the relationship between familismo and psychological well-being. However, both familismo and enculturation were positively related to psychological well-being. In Hypothesis 2, familismo and acculturation were positively related to psychological well-being; acculturation did moderate the relationship between familismo and psychological well-being as predicted. Thus, the relationship between familismo and psychological well-being was positive for both high and low acculturation groups; however the relationship was a bit stronger for low acculturated individuals. Hypothesis 3 was partially supported and indicated that enculturation moderately predicted psychological well-being but there was no significant mediation by familismo. Hypothesis 4 was not supported because there was no significant relationship between acculturation and psychological well-being. Hypothesis 5 was not supported because after controlling for levels of socioeconomic status, educational attainment, and age, Latina/os who were second generation tended to report higher scores on enculturation than those belonging in the first and 1.5 generation. Additionally, there were no differences in familismo and psychological well-being across all generations. For Hypothesis 6 as predicted, Latina/os who were first generation averaged lower on acculturation compared to those in the 1.5 and second generation. Interpretation and critique of the findings, clinical and theoretical implications, and future directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: The Latino population has been increasing at an unprecedented rate and has replaced African Americans as the largest racial/ethnic minority group in the US. In spite of this increase, the factors that contribute to variation in the mental health of Latinos are understudied. Using data from the National Asian and Latino American Study (NLAAS) - the first study to include a nationally representative sample of Latino Americans - I examine the association between psychological distress; socioeconomic status measured as education, household income, and wealth; familism measured as marital status, household size, family cohesion, and perceived family support; and generational status for three Latino subgroups: Mexicans, Cubans, and Puerto Ricans. The results of regression analysis indicate that education and wealth are associated with psychological distress among Cubans but that only wealth is strongly associated with psychological distress among Puerto Ricans. The finding that only wealth is weakly associated with psychological distress among Mexicans suggests that the Hispanic Health Paradox only applies to Mexicans. No threshold effect of socio-economic status was observed for any Latino group. Marital status and household size are not associated with distress. I find that perceived family support moderates the health impact of low education and low income for Cubans but find no evidence of moderation among Mexicans and Puerto Ricans. This suggests that the traditional familism associated with Latino cultures is particularly salient for the well-being of less affluent Cuban immigrants. There is no direct or moderating effect of generational status on the psychological distress for any of the three Latino sub-groups, which does not support the central premise of the acculturation hypothesis. This study highlights the importance of examining ethnic variations in the association of social and cultural factors and mental health among Latinos and of identifying the mental health impact of various measures of socio-economic status and familism.

The objective of this study is to describe socio-demographic characteristics of older Latino adults, to examine their level of mental health, and investigate the impact of gender on psychological distress in this population. The participants examined in this study are 55 and over Hispanic residing in a private residence. This sample was drawn from the 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). Socio-economic status was found to be a statistically significant factor for psychological distress as measured by days of poor mental health for the past 30 days. Results showed that low-income is a strong predictor of psychological distress among Latino older adults. Females had far more days of poor mental health than males. These findings demonstrate the importance of early intervention and it identifies the patterns of psychological distress among older Latino adults.

Book excerpt: Foreign-born Latinos are at particular risk for underutilizing mental health services (Alegria et al., 2007b). The purpose of this study was to examine the roles of acculturation and stigma about mental disorder in the use of mental health services among West Coast Latinos, including foreign- and U.S.-born. Variables measured included acculturation, stigma, mental health status, and past-year mental health service visits to three types of providers: (a) medical; (b) specialty mental health; and (c) non-clinical. I accounted for the influence of mental health status as I evaluated the following hypotheses: (1) Foreign-born Latinos will report lower levels of acculturation and higher levels of stigma than U.S.-born Latinos; and (2) lower levels of acculturation and higher levels of stigma will correlate with lower mental health services use. Results indicated that foreign- and U.S.-born Latinos had used services to the same extent in the year prior and reported similar levels of mental health functioning. There was no evidence of a relationship between acculturation, stigma, and mental health services use. However, having insurance and lower education were shown to be predictors of making a mental health visit (p= .014). Unexpectedly, more U.S.-born Latinos had made at least one past-year visit to a non-clinical source than foreign-born Latinos (p= .043). Overall, this study demonstrated that, while cultural and attitudinal factors did not play a significant role in the use of mental health services, socioeconomic factors of having health insurance and lower educational attainment did.
