Download or read book The Family of Man Revisited written by Gerd Hurm and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-09 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Family of Man is the most widely seen exhibition in the history of photography. The book of the exhibition, still in print, is also the most commercially successful photobook ever published. First shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1955, the exhibition travelled throughout the United States and to forty-six countries, and was seen by over nine million people. Edward Steichen conceived, curated and designed the exhibition. He explained its subject as `the everydayness of life' and `the essential oneness of mankind throughout the world'. The exhibition was a statement against war and the conflicts and divisions that threatened a common future for humanity after 1945. The popular international response was overwhelmingly enthusiastic. Many critics, however, have dismissed the exhibition as a form of sentimental humanism unable to address the challenges of history, politics and cultural difference. This book revises the critical debate about The Family of Man, challenging in particular the legacy of Roland Barthes's influential account of the exhibition. The expert contributors explore new contexts for understanding Steichen's work and they undertake radically new analyses of the formal dynamics of the exhibition. Also presented are documents about the exhibition never before available in English. Commentaries by critical theorist Max Horkheimer and novelist Wolfgang Koeppen, letters from photographer August Sander, and a poetic sequence on the images by Polish poet Witold Wirpsza enable and encourage new critical reflections. A detailed survey of audience responses in Munich from 1955 allows a rare glimpse of what visitors thought about the exhibition. Today, when armed conflict, environmental catastrophe and economic inequality continue to threaten our future, it seems timely to revisit The Family of Man.

Book Synopsis Afrikaner Odyssey by : Martin Meredith
Download or read book Afrikaner Odyssey written by Martin Meredith and published by Jonathan Ball Publishers. This book was released on 2017-02-06 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The odyssey of the Reitz family passes like a thread through the tapestry of South African history in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Originally Dutch-Afrikaner gentry from the Cape, the family moved to the frontier settlement of Bloemfontein and played a key role in the building of the Orange Free State. At the heart of this tale is the extraordinary career of Deneys Reitz, whose account of his adventures in the field during the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), published as Commando, became a classic of irregular warfare. Martin Meredith interweaves Reitz's experiences, taken from his unpublished notebooks, with the wider story of Britain's brutal suppression of Boer resistance. Concise and readable, and featuring rare photographs from the family archives, Afrikaner Odyssey is a wide-ranging portrait of a distinguished Afrikaner family whose presence is still marked on the South African landscape.

The region not only joined the front lines, but also played its part in the abolition of slavery. Including an extensive Underground Railroad system, many defied the Federal Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 to help those desperate to be free pass through the region on their way to Canada. The Wilds had average citizens and heroes alike volunteer for service including women who were not nurses but acted as nurses and those who remained on the home-front. Author Kathy Meyers presents stories of how the war came to the Pennsylvania Wilds and how the people of the Wilds responded.

Book excerpt: Well known to thousands of South Africans as a radio personality and 'quiz-kid', Eric Rosenthal has in addition over the years reached another perhaps wider audience through his work as an author and journalist. The variety and scope of his publications as impressive as his general knowledge, ranging from guide books and history to works on the supernatural, and he has in addition carved out for himself a unique field as an industrial historian. He was born in Cape Town, but his family soon moved to Johannesburg. Educated at PTPS and St. John's College, and at the University of the Witwatersrand, he qualified as an attorney, but his first love has always been writing, and an early start in journalism launched him on a career which has brought him a wealth of memorable and amusing experiences, which he shares with us in this autobiography. Since his childhood Eric Rosenthal has enjoyed sketching as a hobby, and the charming drawings which illustrate this book not only enliven the reminiscences they accompany, but amply demonstrate yet another talent of this remarkably versatile author. He and his wife now live in Fish Hoek in the Cape. They have four grown-up children and eleven grandchildren.
