Book excerpt: Every voluntary or involuntary action of the body, sense or mind must correspond to the dormant impressions stored up in the subtle body. Although growth, the process of nourishment and all the changes of the gross physical body take place according to the necessarily acting causes, yet the whole series of actions, and consequently every individual act, the condition of the body which accomplishes it, nay, the whole process in and through which the body exists, are nothing but the outward expressions of the latent impressions stored up in the subtle body. Upon these rests the perfect suitableness of the animal or human body to the animal or human nature of one's impressions. The organs of the senses must therefore completely correspond to the principal desires which are the strongest and most ready to manifest. They are the visible expressions of these desires. If there be no hunger or desire to eat, teeth, throat and bowels will be of no use. If there be no desire for grasping and moving, hands and leags will be useless. Similarly it can be shown that the desire for seeing, hearing, etc., has produced the eye, ear, etc. If I have no desire to use my hand, and if I do not use it at all, within a few months it will wither away and die. In India there are some religious fanatics who hold up their arms and do not use them at all; after a few months their arms wither and become stiff and dead. A person who lies on his back for six months loses the power of walking. There are many such instances which prove the injurious effects of the disuse of our limbs and organs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reincarnation is usually considered to be an ancient, non-Christian doctrine originating in the East. Is it compatible with the teachings of Christianity? In a lively and fluid style, Pietro Archiati describes the approach to reincarnation taken by the spiritual master Rudolf Steiner--an approach that is wholly relevant to Western consciousness and steeped in true Christianity. By applying and developing Steiner's ideas, Archiati brings the concept of reincarnation to bear on many aspects of modern life, including such vexed issues as abortion and rape. He addresses the question of whether reincarnation appears in the New Testament, and explains how we can understand theological problems such as Christ's Resurrection and the resurrection of the body from this wider context.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The soul's immortality and its repeated earthly births are not new ideas in Western thought. They are implicit in the Pythagorean and Platonic traditions, as well as in some branches of esoteric Judaism and Cabbala. But it was not until the early years of this century that the West was given a detailed, modern, evolutionary philosophy of human life based on the reality of reincarnation and karma. This turning point occurred when Rudolf Steiner began to make public the results of his spiritual scientific researches. He viewed the revelation of reincarnation and karma as one of his most important life tasks. Steiner's contribution, however, remains unique in its understanding of the human being as an evolving, developing being of body, soul, and spirit. On the basis of his researches--presented in numerous books and lectures--we begin to understand how the complex interaction of human lives between birth and death and between death and a new birth gives new meaning not only to individual lives lived on Earth in community with others, but also to human history and evolution and to earthly and cosmic events. This book collects many of Steiner's major statements on reincarnation and karma. The primary purpose of this volume is to help readers meet the challenge of spiritual research in the area of individual evolution of the soul and spirit in the context of cultural and universal evolution. Such a study can be tremendously revealing and provide spiritual understanding in a time of increasing intellectual confusion and spiritual poverty. The notion of reincarnation and karma is generally associated in most minds with spiritual traditions of the East, especially Hinduism and Buddhism. Ren Querido's in-depth, sixty-page introduction, however, places these concepts within the context of Western spiritual development and esoteric tradition, showing us a panoramic view of how such ideas have developed over the centuries in the West. Contents: Introduction by Ren Querido: 1 Our Present Dilemma 2 Historical Survey of Reincarnation and Karma 3 Rudolf Steiner's Original Contributions The lectures: 1 Natural and Chance Illnesses in the Human Being 2 Elemental Events, Volcanic Eruptions, Earthquakes & Epidemics in Relation to Karma 3 Death and Rebirth in Relation to Karma 4 Knowledge of Reincarnation and Karma 5 Examples of Karma Working between Two Incarnations 6 Vital Questions in the Light of Reincarnation and Karma 7 The Formation of Karmic Forces 8 Reincarnation of the Spirit and Destiny

As, for instance, if I have a strong desire to become an artist, and if after a life-long struggle I do not succeed in being the greatest, after the death of the body I will be born of such parents and with such environments as will help me to become the best artist. The whole process is expressed in Eastern philosophy by the doctrine of the Reincarnation of the individual soul. Although this doctrine is commonly rejected in the West, it is unreservedly accepted by the vast majority of mankind of the present day, as it was in past centuries. The scientific explanation of this theory we find nowhere except in the writings of the Hindus; still we know that from very ancient times it was believed by the philosophers, sages and prophets of different countries. The ancient civilization of Egypt was built upon a crude form of the doctrine of Reincarnation. Herodotus says: "The Egyptians propounded the theory[...]".
