Book excerpt: Three modern-day teens have been reincarnated as saints—or so they’ve been told. Kirkus Reviews calls this dark, thrilling follow-up to Precious Blood that blends the gritty with the miraculous “a terrific second volume.” As we learned in Precious Blood, Agnes, Cecilia, and Lucy “may be saints, [but] they are definitely not angels” (Kirkus Reviews). They watched as Sebastian sacrificed himself for what he believed in, and now they have choices to make of their own. Will the girls trust in their destinies as saints and martyrs and perform the miracles as Sebastian instructed? Or will they lose faith in themselves and each other in his absence? Time is running out for them to make a decision, and the fate of the world lies in the balance.
Book Synopsis I was born Mother of Saint by : Laerte do Cachoeira
Download or read book I was born Mother of Saint written by Laerte do Cachoeira and published by Laerte de Holanda Sales Filho. This book was released on 2020-12-04 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the English version of the original in Portuguese (2017): “Nasci Mãe de Santo - A maravilhosa história da Yalorixá Mãe Senhora de Umbanda, Sacerdotisa de Z A M B Y” (ISBN 978-85-924121-0-4). The book is a tribute to Mãe Senhora de Umbanda, in her extremely rare condition as Yalorixá Priestess of Z A M B Y, Consecrated by the Most High, Daughter of Ogum Quebramar and Yansã Guaracyara, Leaders Orixás of the Tenda de Umbanda Morada dos Orixás. It describes her beautiful trajectory in Umbanda in this reincarnation (1930-2015), preceded that was by her Consecration by the HIGHEST - hence the title “I was born Mother of Saint”, with emphasis on her total adoration to the CREATOR, as the faithful and discreet servant, and her greater mission, given by Our Father OXALÁ - and fulfilled with praise, to carry the Love of Our Lord JESUS to the depths of the Abyss. Preliminarily to this description, covered in Part II of the book, it is made a contextualization in relation to Umbanda, as detailed in Part I, in which is given emphasis to the Meaning, Origin and Organization of UMBANDA, including related themes, such as religious syncretism, evolution of spirits, Umbral and Quimbanda. The gestation of the book dates back to the 1980s, when the author, Laerte do Cachoeira, was honored by Yansã Guaracyara with the mission of one day writing it, as Yobá of Yansã ('The Eyes of Yansã'). Throughout this period, records were made of guidelines and revelations made by the Orixás and the People of Exu when incorporated in Mãe Senhora de Umbanda during the giras (sessions) in the Terreiro, as well as testimonies made by Mãe Senhora, in addition to recordings in audios and videos, which were compiled and organized after her passage. The records that were selected and included in the book are duly referenced, either in the body of the text or in footnotes. Everything else in the book, although it expresses the author's own thought, it is his conviction that mirrors all guidance and help received from the Orixás and the Exu People, under the command of Ogum Quebramar and Yansã Guaracyara, for the elaboration of this tribute from the Tenda de Umbanda Morada dos Orixás to its Beloved Yalorixá. It is important to note that, in line with the Statutes of the Tenda de Umbanda Morada dos Orixás, this book will not be sold, either in part or in whole. To this end, the book, including all attachments, with photos, audios and videos, is being freely available on the internet (for unrestricted public access) at https://msumbanda.blogspot.com.br/ . However, it is requested that eventual quotes are properly referenced. Laerte do Cachoeira Yobá of Yansã December 4th, 2020

Download or read book Saints written by Françoise Meltzer and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the modern world has largely dismissed the figure of the saint as a throwback, we remain fascinated by excess, marginality, transgression, and porous subjectivity—categories that define the saint. In this collection, Françoise Meltzer and Jas Elsner bring together top scholars from across the humanities to reconsider our denial of saintliness and examine how modernity returns to the lure of saintly grace, energy, and charisma. Addressing such problems as how saints are made, the use of saints by political and secular orders, and how holiness is personified, Saints takes us on a photo tour of Graceland and the cult of Elvis and explores the changing political takes on Joan of Arc in France. It shows us the self-fashioning of culture through the reevaluation of saints in late-antique Judaism and Counter-Reformation Rome, and it questions the political intent of underlying claims to spiritual attainment of a Muslim sheikh in Morocco and of Sephardism in Israel. Populated with the likes of Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, and Padre Pio, this book is a fascinating inquiry into the status of saints in the modern world.

Book Synopsis D.R. Congo: the Darkness of the Heart by : Loso Kiteti Boya
Download or read book D.R. Congo: the Darkness of the Heart written by Loso Kiteti Boya and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Synopsis: This book recounts from the perspective of a Congolese native the five-hundred-year journey of the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It analyzes dispassionately the facts of the turbulent history of the country and its continuing impact on the life of the modern-day Congolese. In the book, we set out to begin the search for the Congolese answers to the DR Congos historical paradox of a very rich country living a very poor life in a neighborhood in which it is the biggest and yet the weakest country. We travel back five hundred years to rediscover the ancient kingdom of Congo and look closely at its people, institutions, value and belief systems, customs and practices and try to establish the linkages between the present cultural values, belief system, and practices of the modern-day Congolese with those of their past. Through the revisiting of the past, we try to identify the ways and means of a more effective strategy for social, political, and economic renaissance in the DR Congo. Although a diary, the book is not a chronological presentation of the Congos history. The reader can expect to travel back and forth on the meandering road of the Congolese journey. The DR Congo is a land of ecological gigantism and an environmental Garden of Eden. It has the second largest freshwater river in the world, the Congo River, a powerful source of clean energy, and the second largest tropical rain forest in the world; the largest number of big lakes in Africa, including Lake Tanganyika; one of the largest assortment of minerals and precious metals and gems in the world, including uranium; and a large landmass of 906,000 square miles stretching over two time zones with a population of less than seventy million, translating into one the lowest population densities in the world. Such an array of diverse and rich natural resources and the extraordinary economic power potential of DR Congo have always attracted envy and invasions from foreign countries, multinational companies, and individuals over the centuries, the latest being the attack of the combined armies of Rwanda, Uganda, and Burundi in August 1998. The history of the DR Congo is also the history of the darkness of the human heart, extreme cruelty and violence, greed and selfishness by the early European explorers, the slave traders, the Zanzibari Arab slave merchants of the last centuries, and the neocolonialists and cold warriors of the twentieth century. It is the history of treason of the Congo by the Congolese, the betrayal of the public trust of the people, and of the pursuit of power at all costs and bad management of the economy by the Congolese leaders and the politicians, from the medieval kings of the kingdom of the Congo to the present-day ruling class. The book follows the less publicized but crucial journeys of the numerous Congolese slaves to the Americas, documenting their early settlements in the United States, the Caribbean Islands, and Brazil and reconnecting their present-day descendants in the Americas to their Congolese roots and ancestry.
