Book excerpt: "The eighteen chapters of this book explore the complex history of exchange between Byzantium and the Latin West over a period of more than three hundred years, with a focus on the political, ecclesiastical and cultural spheres. Besides outlining the history of competition and collaboration between two empires in medieval Europe, a range of regional approaches, stretching from England to the Crusader kingdoms, offer insights into the many aspects of Byzantine-Latin contact and exchange. Further sections explore patterns of mutual perception, linguistic and material dimensions of the contacts, as well as the role played by various groups of "cultural brokers" such as ambassadors, merchants, monks and Jewish communities. Contributors are: Axel Bayer, Saskia Dönitz, Nicolas Drocourt, Leonie Exarchos, Daniel Föller, Christian Gastgeber, Hans-Werner Goetz, Dominik Heher, Klaus Herbers, Christopher Hobbs, David Jacoby, Sebastian Kolditz, Savvas Neocleous, Johannes Pahlitzsch, Annick Peters-Custot, Miriam Salzmann, Jonathan Shepard, Juan Signes Codoñer, and Eleni Tounta"--

Book excerpt: Towards the end of the nineteenth century, Germany's bourgeois elites became enthralled by the civilization of Renaissance Italy. As their own country entered a phase of critical socioeconomic changes, German historians and writers reinvented the Italian Renaissance as the onset of a heroic modernity: a glorious dawn that ushered in an age of secular individualism, imbued with ruthless vitality and a neo-pagan zest for beauty. The Italian Renaissance in the German Historical Imagination is the first comprehensive account of the debates that shaped the German idea of the Renaissance in the seven decades following Jacob Burckhardt's seminal study of 1860. Based on a wealth of archival material and enhanced by more than one hundred illustrations, it provides a new perspective on the historical thought of Imperial and Weimar Germany, and the formation of a concept that is still with us today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: In the early middle ages the court was a centre for meetings of secular and clerical princes. At the court of emperors, kings, and popes, the princes of different lordships met and the court was therefore at the centre of conflict. The court as centre of rule is especially important at the moment when the cooperation at the court is questioned by escalating quarrels. In the situation of conflict the notions of the princes emerge more clearly, the implicit demands the princes were subordinated to as well as the political mode of functioning at the court. In situations of conflict the mechanism of culture of debate in the early middle ages can be observed. Different aspects of conflict at court in the early middle ages were discussed at this international congress. german description: Im fruhen Mittelalter war der Hof ein zentraler Ort der Begegnung geistlicher und weltlicher Fursten.

Book excerpt: The christianization of Central and Northern Europe, fundamental for the formation of the unity of our civilization was considered by earlier scholarship only in terms of what took place but not in terms of the official norms of the medieval church. On the other hand, the spiritual starting point of so-called “missionary objects” was left largely out of view. Consequently, anachronistic terms came in to use and actual facts became distorted. 26 Studies, published over more than 50 years in four different countries, discuss these problems especially against the background of Carolingian Saxony, and the Slavonic tribes between Germany and Poland, -most of whom may also be seen as the ancestors of modern-day Germans-, with special reference to the strange “Wendenkreuzzug” (Wendish crusade) of 1147.

Book excerpt: It has for decades been part of the canon of maxims of basic research that most images of rulers in early medieval book illustrations have been transmitted in liturgical manuscripts, i.e. manuscripts originally intended for divine worship. There have however to date been few investigations which draw serious consequences from this and which also view miniatures of rulers in the light of their functional aspects, for example as ‘memorial depictions’ (O.G. Oexle), or on the basis of the social reality of the pious motives behind their presentation. This study gives a more precise explanation of the function and purpose of ruler-images by examining a few selected early medieval miniatures. It analyzes the historical and social contexts of their genesis and the liturgical and commemorative aims of their use against the setting of the social form of remembrance of confraternity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Emperor John II Komnenos (1118–1143) has been overshadowed by both his father Alexios I and his son Manuel I. Written sources have not left us much evidence regarding his reign, although authors agree that he was an excellent emperor. However, the period witnessed territorial expansion in Asia Minor as well as the construction of the most important monastic complex of twelfth-century Constantinople. What else do we know about John’s rule and its period? This volume opens up new perspectives on John’s reign and clearly demonstrates that many innovations generally attributed to the genius of Manuel Komnenos had already been fostered during the reign of the second great Komnenos. Leading experts on twelfth-century Byzantium (Jeffreys, Magdalino, Ousterhout) are joined by representatives of a new generation of Byzantinists to produce a timely and invaluable study of the unjustly neglected figure of John Komnenos.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of discussions held by an international group studying the medieval state, discussions that aimed at moving beyond the limitations of research traditions at the national level. Rather than dealing with the terminological question whether the term state should be used for early medieval kingdoms at all, the question was raised how political integration was reached and how supra-regional communities were shaped by the interaction of monarchs and aristocracy, Christian and lay institutions, as well as kingdoms and their people. The contributions offer case studies that discuss both perceptions of the state and the various ways that public rule worked. They take into account the varying research approaches found in Europe, but offer a much wider view of the early medieval state by considering various forms of political integration and abstract perceptions of the community.
