Book excerpt: A project panel was established to provide guidelines for the rehabilitation of concrete pavements in Colorado. Techniques used by other state highway agencies were compared to the type and severity of concrete pavement distress observed in-state. Representatives from the concrete and asphalt pavement paving organizations were also invited to provide input to the study. Suggested methods are provided to renew the design life of deteriorated concrete pavements. Alternative methods of construction from which to choose are included along with examples for comparing life cycle costs.

The objective of this experiment is to determine the relative influence and long-term effectiveness of different rehabilitation techniques (including overlay thickness, material, and surface preparation) and site conditions (traffic, pre-existing pavement condition, and climatic factors) on performance. This report documents the first comprehensive review and evaluation of data completeness and availability from the SPS-5 experiment. Eighteen SPS-5 projects have been identified. At each site there are nine core test sections. Some SPS-5 projects also have various supplemental sections. 210 test sections are included in the SPS-5 experiment. The data availability and completeness were good overall for the SPS-5 experiment with two exceptions: traffic and materials test data. These data deficiencies need to be addressed before a comprehensive analysis of the SPS-5 experiment is conducted. Both of these data elements must be collected in order for the SPS-5 experiment to meet the expectations for calibrating and validating mechanistic models. The majority of the SPS-5 data that were collected were at level E. Required experiment design factors were compared with the actual experiment design for the large majority of the design factors and can be characterized as good to excellent when comparing designed versus constructed. One project had yet to be constructed and materials testing and data processing still needed to be completed.

Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of an international conference held at Empa (Swiss Federal Laboratories for materials Science and Technology) in Dübendorf, Switzerland, in July 2020. The conference series was established by the International Society of Maintenance and Rehabilitation of Transport Infrastructure (iSMARTi) for promoting and discussing state-of-the-art design, maintenance, rehabilitation and management of pavements. The inaugural conference was held at Mackenzie Presbyterian University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2000. The series has steadily grown over the past 20 years, with installments hosted in various countries all over the world. The respective contributions share the latest insights from research and practice in the maintenance and rehabilitation of pavements, and discuss advanced materials, technologies and solutions for achieving an even more sustainable and environmentally friendly infrastructure.

Book excerpt: Nineteen test sections were constructed by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) as part of Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) Specific Pavement Studies (SPS)-6 experiment. The SPS-6 program addresses the rehabilitation of jointed portland cement concrete pavement. The objective of the SPS-6 experiment is to develop improved performance prediction models to be used for determining the additional pavement life that can be expected from the application of a variety of JCP pavement rehabilitation methods, ranging from minimal to maximum investment. Construction of the 19 SPS-6 test sections was successfully incorporated in ADOT project IR-40-4(123) on I-40 at Flagstaff. Eight of the 19 test sections meet the basic SHRP requirements for the experiment. The additional 11 sections were designed by ADOT to evaluate features that are not included in the SHRP experiment design.

Book excerpt: This report presents guidelines for selection of rehabilitation strategies for asphalt-overlaid concrete (AC/PCC) pavements, summarizes the performance of second AC overlays of AC/PCC pavements on Illinois Interstates, and presents procedures for design of three types of overlays of AC/PCC pavements: second AC overlay; unbonded PCC overlay; and AC overlay of rubblized PCC with the existing AC removed. The overlay design procedures are based on the 1993 revised AASHTO overlay design procedures, customized for Illinois conditions. A practical catalog of rehabilitation designs is presented for AC/PCC pavements in various categories of condition, traffic level, and PCC pavement type.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to serve the needs of the motoring public. Our system of paved roads and streets has developed steadily over the years. Still, the rapid increase in the number of vehicles has far exceeded the mileage of new roads added to accommodate them. Many of the older pavements are carrying motor vehicles whose volume and weight and speed are far in excess of those for which the pavements were designed. Sharp curves, steep grades, short sight distances, short vertical curves and narrow roadways are among the geometrical deficiencies that limit the pavements capacity and safety. In addition, many pavements, for various reasons, need strengthening; others need surface restoration. The objective of this manual is to propose an economical way to salvage, strengthen, and modernize deficient roads and streets with asphalt concrete.

Diefenderfer and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning in 2004, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) undertook a series of pavement rehabilitation projects to address deficiencies in three sections of the I-64 corridor between Richmond and Newport News. I-64 serves as the primary avenue between the Richmond and Hampton Roads metropolitan areas and carries a combined traffic volume ranging from approximately 20,000 to 90,000 vehicles per day. For nearly 100 mi, this roadway is a four-lane divided facility that was originally built between the late 1960s and early 1970s as either a jointed reinforced or continuously reinforced concrete pavement. The existing concrete pavement was rehabilitated using three rehabilitation procedures: two standard approaches and an experimental approach. The standard rehabilitation procedures included the use of full-depth portland cement concrete (PCC) patches overlaid by a hot-mix asphalt (HMA) overlay and full-depth PCC patches followed by grinding of the pavement surface. The experimental rehabilitation procedure consisted of the use of full- and partial-depth HMA patches followed by an HMA overlay. The purpose of this study was to document the initial condition and performance to date of the I-64 project and to summarize similar work performed by state departments of transportation other than VDOT. The pavement rehabilitation cost per lane-mile was nearly 20% less for the section of I-64 for which full-depth PCC patches followed by grinding of the pavement surface was used than for the other two sections. However, the experimental results do not allow for a comparison to determine any differences in the structural capacity or service life between the sections. The study recommends that VDOT's Materials Division annually monitor the ride quality of the pavement in the three rehabilitated sections of I-64 so that the end of service life can be defined as the pavement roughness increases because of deterioration. Further, the Virginia Transportation Research Council should collaborate with other research organizations to encourage and pursue full-scale or laboratory-scale accelerated pavement testing to determine the optimum repair materials and methods for pre-overlay repair of existing PCC pavements and to develop models to quantify the deterioration of an asphalt overlay placed over an existing concrete pavement because of reflection cracking.
