Book excerpt: This book is an outgrowth of the Workshop on "Regulators in Analysis, Geom etry and Number Theory" held at the Edmund Landau Center for Research in Mathematical Analysis of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1996. During the preparation and the holding of the workshop we were greatly helped by the director of the Landau Center: Lior Tsafriri during the time of the planning of the conference, and Hershel Farkas during the meeting itself. Organizing and running this workshop was a true pleasure, thanks to the expert technical help provided by the Landau Center in general, and by its secretary Simcha Kojman in particular. We would like to express our hearty thanks to all of them. However, the articles assembled in the present volume do not represent the proceedings of this workshop; neither could all contributors to the book make it to the meeting, nor do the contributions herein necessarily reflect talks given in Jerusalem. In the introduction, we outline our view of the theory to which this volume intends to contribute. The crucial objective of the present volume is to bring together concepts, methods, and results from analysis, differential as well as algebraic geometry, and number theory in order to work towards a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of regulators and secondary invariants. Our thanks go to all the participants of the workshop and authors of this volume. May the readers of this book enjoy and profit from the combination of mathematical ideas here documented.

Book excerpt: In the last decade there has been an extraordinary confluence of ideas in mathematics and theoretical physics brought about by pioneering discoveries in geometry and analysis. The various chapters in this volume, treating the interface of geometric analysis and mathematical physics, represent current research interests. No suitable succinct account of the material is available elsewhere. Key topics include: * A self-contained derivation of the partition function of Chern- Simons gauge theory in the semiclassical approximation (D.H. Adams) * Algebraic and geometric aspects of the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations in conformal field theory (P. Bouwknegt) * Application of the representation theory of loop groups to simple models in quantum field theory and to certain integrable systems (A.L. Carey and E. Langmann) * A study of variational methods in Hermitian geometry from the viewpoint of the critical points of action functionals together with physical backgrounds (A. Harris) * A review of monopoles in nonabelian gauge theories (M.K. Murray) * Exciting developments in quantum cohomology (Y. Ruan) * The physics origin of Seiberg-Witten equations in 4-manifold theory (S. Wu) Graduate students, mathematicians and mathematical physicists in the above-mentioned areas will benefit from the user-friendly introductory style of each chapter as well as the comprehensive bibliographies provided for each topic. Prerequisite knowledge is minimal since sufficient background material motivates each chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to the relatively new discipline of arithmetic dynamics. Whereas classical discrete dynamics is the study of iteration of self-maps of the complex plane or real line, arithmetic dynamics is the study of the number-theoretic properties of rational and algebraic points under repeated application of a polynomial or rational function. A principal theme of arithmetic dynamics is that many of the fundamental problems in the theory of Diophantine equations have dynamical analogs. This graduate-level text provides an entry for students into an active field of research and serves as a standard reference for researchers.

Kac and R. Moody, generalizing the finite-dimensional semisimple Lie alge bras which we refer to as the finite case. The theory has undergone tremendous developments in various directions and connections with diverse areas abound, including mathematical physics, so much so that this theory has become a stan dard tool in mathematics. A detailed treatment of the Lie algebra aspect of the theory can be found in V. Kac's book [Kac-90l This self-contained work treats the algebro-geometric and the topological aspects of Kac-Moody theory from scratch. The emphasis is on the study of the Kac-Moody groups 9 and their flag varieties XY, including their detailed construction, and their applications to the representation theory of g. In the finite case, 9 is nothing but a semisimple Y simply-connected algebraic group and X is the flag variety 9 /Py for a parabolic subgroup p y C g.

Book excerpt: In 1932 Norbert Wiener gave a series of lectures on Fourier analysis at the Univer sity of Cambridge. One result of Wiener's visit to Cambridge was his well-known text The Fourier Integral and Certain of its Applications; another was a paper by G. H. Hardy in the 1933 Journalofthe London Mathematical Society. As Hardy says in the introduction to this paper, This note originates from a remark of Prof. N. Wiener, to the effect that "a f and g [= j] cannot both be very small". ... The theo pair of transforms rems which follow give the most precise interpretation possible ofWiener's remark. Hardy's own statement of his results, lightly paraphrased, is as follows, in which f is an integrable function on the real line and f is its Fourier transform: x 2 m If f and j are both 0 (Ix1e- /2) for large x and some m, then each is a finite linear combination ofHermite functions. In particular, if f and j are x2 x 2 2 2 both O(e- / ), then f = j = Ae- / , where A is a constant; and if one x 2 2 is0(e- / ), then both are null.

Book excerpt: D-modules continues to be an active area of stimulating research in such mathematical areas as algebraic, analysis, differential equations, and representation theory. Key to D-modules, Perverse Sheaves, and Representation Theory is the authors' essential algebraic-analytic approach to the theory, which connects D-modules to representation theory and other areas of mathematics. To further aid the reader, and to make the work as self-contained as possible, appendices are provided as background for the theory of derived categories and algebraic varieties. The book is intended to serve graduate students in a classroom setting and as self-study for researchers in algebraic geometry, representation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume Studies in Memory of Issai Schur was conceived as a tribute to Schur's of his tragic end. His impact on great contributions to mathematics and in remembrance of mathematicians Representation Theory alone was so great that a significant number of Researchers (TMR) Network, in the European Community Training and Mobility Orbits, Crystals and Representation Theory, in operation during the period (1997-2002) have been occupied with what has been called Schur theory. Consequently, this volume has the additional purpose of recording some of the significant results of the network. It was furthermore appropriate that invited contributors should be amongst the speakers at the Paris Midterm Workshop of the network held at Chevaleret during 21-25 May, 2000 as well as those of the Schur Memoriam Workshop held at the Weizmann Institute, Rehovot, during 27-31 December 2000. The latter marked the sixtieth anniversary of Schur's passing and took place in the 125th year of his birth.

The goal of the symposium was to bring together mathematicians whose research efforts have led to recent advances in algebraic geometry, algebraic K-theory, algebraic topology, and mathematical physics. A common theme of this symposium was the development of new perspectives and new constructions with a categorical flavor. As the lectures at the symposium and the papers of this volume demonstrate, these perspectives and constructions have enabled a broadening of vistas, a synergy between once-differentiated subjects, and solutions to mathematical problems both old and new.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deep and relatively new field of vertex operator algebras is intimately related to a variety of areas in mathematics and physics: for example, the concepts of "monstrous moonshine," infinite-dimensional Lie theory, string theory, and conformal field theory. This book introduces the reader to the fundamental theory of vertex operator algebras and its basic techniques and examples. Beginning with a detailed presentation of the theoretical foundations and proceeding to a range of applications, the text includes a number of new, original results and also highlights and brings fresh perspective to important works of many researchers. After introducing the elementary "formal calculus'' underlying the subject, the book provides an axiomatic development of vertex operator algebras and their modules, expanding on the early contributions of R. Borcherds, I. Frenkel, J. Lepowsky, A. Meurman, Y.-Z. Huang, C. Dong, Y. Zhu and others. The concept of a "representation'' of a vertex (operator) algebra is treated in detail, following and extending the work of H. Li; this approach is used to construct important families of vertex (operator) algebras and their modules. Requiring only a familiarity with basic algebra, Introduction to Vertex Operator Algebras and Their Representations will be useful for graduate students and researchers in mathematics and physics. The booka??s presentation of the core topics will equip readers to embark on many active research directions related to vertex operator algebras, group theory, representation theory, and string theory.

It presents the general properties of polynomially convex sets with particular attention to the theory of the hulls of one-dimensional sets. Coverage examines in considerable detail questions of uniform approximation for the most part on compact sets but with some attention to questions of global approximation on noncompact sets. The book also discusses important applications and motivates the reader with numerous examples and counterexamples, which serve to illustrate the general theory and to delineate its boundaries.
