Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The medieval church was founded on and governed by concepts of faith and trust--but not in the way that is popularly assumed. Offering a radical new interpretation of the institutional church and its social consequences in England, Ian Forrest argues that between 1200 and 1500 the ability of bishops to govern depended on the cooperation of local people known as trustworthy men and shows how the combination of inequality and faith helped make the medieval church. Trustworthy men (in Latin, viri fidedigni) were jurors, informants, and witnesses who represented their parishes when bishops needed local knowledge or reliable collaborators. Their importance in church courts, at inquests, and during visitations grew enormously between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries. The church had to trust these men, and this trust rested on the complex and deep-rooted cultures of faith that underpinned promises and obligations, personal reputation and identity, and belief in God. But trust also had a dark side. For the church to discriminate between the trustworthy and untrustworthy was not to identify the most honest Christians but to find people whose status ensured their word would not be contradicted. This meant men rather than women, and—usually—the wealthier tenants and property holders in each parish. Trustworthy Men illustrates the ways in which the English church relied on and deepened inequalities within late medieval society, and how trust and faith were manipulated for political ends.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of the English legal profession have written comparatively little about the lawyers who served in the courts of the Church. This volume fills a gap; it investigates the law by which they were governed and discusses their careers in legal practice. Using sources drawn from the Roman and canon laws and also from manuscripts found in local archives, R. H. Helmholz brings together previously published work and new evidence about the professional careers of these men. His book covers the careers of many lesser known ecclesiastical lawyers, dealing with their education in law, their reaction to the coming of the Reformation, and their relationship with English common lawyers on the eve of the Civil War. Making connections with the European ius commune, this volume will be of special interest to English and Continental legal historians, as well as to students of the relationship between law and religion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of essays explores the interaction of Church and town in the medieval period in England. Two major themes structure the book. In the first part the authors explore the social and economic dimensions of the interaction; in the second part the emphasis moves to the spaces and built forms of towns and their church buildings. The primary emphasis of the essays is upon the urban activities of the medieval Church as a set of institutions: parish, diocese, monastery, cathedral. In these various institutional roles the Church did much to shape both the origin and the development of the medieval town. In exploring themes of topography, marketing and law the authors show that the relationship of Church and town could be both mutually beneficial and a source of conflict.

Many individuals had active careers until near the end of their lives; the aged were neither rarities nor outcasts within their world.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 994 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This invaluable reference book provides biographical data on some 5,000 Benedictine monks who were members of the eight cathedral priories in Canterbury province between c.1066 and 1540. In the five centuries between the Norman Conquest and the dissolution of the monasteries the cathedralchapters of Bath, Canterbury, Coventry, Ely, Norwich, Rochester, Winchester, and Worcester were all occupied by Benedictine monks; and most of them have been fortunate in the survival of an impressive collection of medieval records. A study of these records makes it possible to reconstruct many details of the daily life of the monks themselves, both inside the cloister and out in the world, where their contact with the laity were not exclusively concerned with spiritual and pastoral matters. Like other men they had to come togrips with economic and financial affairs in managing their properties and providing for the community's basic needs. The information in this volume thus covers a wide range of activities that goes far beyond the limit of religious or ecclesiastical history and includes material that is now, for thefirst time, available for statistical and prosopographical analysis.
