D. 1422-1448 In these appointments the pope aimed, not merely at rewarding those who had done him good service, but also at deliberately challenging the Statute of Provisors. This execrable statute, as he called it, Martin V considered to be a sacrilegious infringe ment of the rights of the Holy See. Its provisions being worse than statutes passed against Jews or Saracens. In 1421 he urged upon Henry V its repeal, together with that of its com plement, the Statute of Premunire; and next year, at the opening of the new reign, he pressed the regent to take the matter in hand. But parliament and people alike were resolute in Opposing this attempt oto restore the supremacy of the pope in England. The struggle became more embittered in the years that followed; and, after the humbling by the pope of the aged and feeble Archbishop Chichele, it was merged into the long strife between the Beauforts and Duke Humphrey of Gloucester. Book Synopsis The Dependent Priories of Medieval English Monasteries by : Martin Heale
Download or read book The Dependent Priories of Medieval English Monasteries written by Martin Heale and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2004 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study charts for the first time the history of the 140 or so daughter houses of English monasteries, which have always been overshadowed by the French cells in England, the so-called alien priories. The first part of the book examines the reasons for the foundation of these monasteries and the relations between dependent priories and their mother houses, bishops and patrons. The second part investigates everyday life in cells, the priories' interaction with their neighbours and their economic viability. The unusual pattern of dissolution of these houses is also revealed. Because of the tremendous bulk of material to survive for English dependencies, this is the most detailed account of a group of small monasteries yet written. Although daughter houses are in many ways unrepresentative of other lesser monasteries, their experience sheds a great deal of light on the world of the small religious house, and suggests that these shadowy institutions were far more central to medieval religion and society than has been appreciated."--BOOK JACKET
Book Synopsis The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England by : Martin Heale
Download or read book The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England written by Martin Heale and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-08 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of the medieval abbot needs no particular emphasis. The monastic superiors of late medieval England ruled over thousands of monks and canons, who swore to them vows of obedience; they were prominent figures in royal and church government; and collectively they controlled properties worth around double the Crown's annual ordinary income. Moreover, as guardians of regular observance and the primary interface between their monastery and the wider world, abbots and priors were pivotal to the effective functioning and well-being of the monastic order. The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England provides the first detailed study of English male monastic superiors, exploring their evolving role and reputation between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries. Individual chapters examine the election and selection of late medieval monastic heads; the internal functions of the superior as the father of the community; the head of house as administrator; abbatial living standards and modes of display; monastic superiors' public role in service of the Church and Crown; their external relations and reputation; the interaction between monastic heads and the government in Henry VIII's England; the Dissolution of the monasteries; and the afterlives of abbots and priors following the suppression of their houses. This study of monastic leadership sheds much valuable light on the religious houses of late medieval and early Tudor England, including their spiritual life, administration, spending priorities, and their multi-faceted relations with the outside world. The Abbots and Priors of Late Medieval and Reformation England also elucidates the crucial part played by monastic superiors in the dramatic events of the 1530s, when many heads surrendered their monasteries into the hands of Henry VIII.

Book Synopsis Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth-Century England by : Alexander Russell
Download or read book Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth-Century England written by Alexander Russell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-07-10 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general councils of the fifteenth century constituted a remarkable political experiment, which used collective decision-making to tackle important problems facing the church. Such problems had hitherto received rigid top-down management from Rome. However, at Constance and Basle, they were debated by delegates of different ranks from across Europe and resolved through majority voting. Fusing the history of political thought with the study of institutional practices, this innovative study relates the procedural innovations of the general councils and their anti-heretical activities to wider trends in corporate politics, intellectual culture and pastoral reform. Alexander Russell argues that the acceptance of collective decision-making at the councils was predicated upon the prevalence of group participation and deliberation in small-scale corporate culture. Conciliarism and Heresy in Fifteenth-Century England offers a fundamental reassessment of England's relationship with the general councils, revealing how political thought, heresy, and collective politics were connected.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the work and contribution of Professor Janet Burton to medieval monastic studies in Britain. Burton has fundamentally changed approaches to the study of religious foundations in regional contexts (Yorkshire and Wales), placing importance on social networks for monastic structures and female Cistercian communities in medieval Britain; moreover, she has pioneered research on the canons and their place in medieval English and Welsh societies. This Festschrift comprises contributions by her colleagues, former students and friends – leading scholars in the field – who engage with and develop themes that are integral to Burton’s work. The rich and diverse collection in the present volume represents original work on religious life in the British Isles from the twelfth to the sixteenth century as homage to the transformative contribution that
