Book Synopsis Regional Development in Russia by : Hans Westlund
Download or read book Regional Development in Russia written by Hans Westlund and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reporting the findings of a joint Swedish-Russian research project, economists overview Russia's regional development during the entire Soviet period, and analyze the array of regional problems facing Russia at the birth of the 21st century. For the Soviet period they reveal that the development of heavy industry actually reduced regional inequalities, but that disparities widened as the economy diversified, and that the science of regional planning never achieved practical application during a regime of central planning. Among the important factors contributing to cohesion and disintegration in Russia today, they cite ethnicity, religion, and Russian nationalism. Participants included demographers, epidemiologists, public health specialists, economists, and policymakers from the NIS countries, the United States, and Western Europe. This volume consists of selected papers presented at the workshops. Book Synopsis Economics And Politics In The USSR by : Hans-Hermann Hohmann
Download or read book Economics And Politics In The USSR written by Hans-Hermann Hohmann and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soviet scholars have apparently stayed clear of meaningful analysis of such touchy subjects as interdependence and conflict in the relationship between economics and politics. Very little has been published on this issue—no surprise in a system that controls centrally both politics and the economy, with an emphasis on rapid economic development. The absence of meaningful Soviet research led the Federal Institute for East European and International Studies in Cologne to sponsor an international interdisciplinary conference on the subject. Contributions to the resulting book cover three main areas. The first includes the impact of traditional Russian political culture on contemporary Soviet economic thinking and behavior, the rank of economic aims in the priority system of Soviet politics, and the function of economic institutions in the implementation of political aims. The second concerns the role of political lobbies in the economy and repercussions of economic change for Soviet politics. Foreign economic relations and the USSR's foreign policy make up the third area. The concluding discussion reviews the state of international research and identifies areas for future study.

Book Synopsis China, Latin America, and the Global Economy by : Aaron Schneider

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks offers accounts of the ways in which Chinese engagement with Latin America will shape the regional and global order with impacts for development, peace, and equity. It also pays close attention to the traditional role played by the USA in the region, how China differs, and the increasingly triangular relationship between the USA, China, and Latin American countries. The contributors analyze various economic dimensions, including trade, infrastructure, and finance, and the historical, sectoral, regional, and national stories seek to change the narrative on China-Latin American relations. In particular, the book argues that there are opportunities for international cooperation to secure gains in the region, but only if the US and China alter their behavior and Latin American countries work collectively and in more coordinated fashion. Together, the chapters offer coherent social science analysis, policy frameworks, and empirical detail to understand and navigate increased Chinese engagement with Latin America.
