Book excerpt: Extract: The number of U.S. farms with sales above a quarter million dollars increased by nearly 1 1/2 times over the last decade, but about half the gain was due to inflation. This report presents the dimensions of change in the farm sector for a number of variables (income wealth, ownership, organization, and concentration of production) adjusted for inflation to document the actual change between 1974 and 1982. It also presents economic profiles of typical farms by region for major commodities.

Book Synopsis Danger All Around by : Joel B. Goldsteen
Download or read book Danger All Around written by Joel B. Goldsteen and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of where to store waste has grabbed a lot of headlines, but people have been slow to realize that the environmental damage caused by storage sites is an even greater menace. This book makes the danger clear, as Joel Goldsteen offers the first comprehensive look at the selection and environmental impact of municipal and petrochemical waste storage sites along the Texas and Louisiana coasts. Goldsteen has distilled a large landfill-worth of data into a highly readable account of the creation and regulation of waste disposal sites, the health issues that surround them, and the human and natural factors that affect how safe or dangerous they become. Chapters that describe industrial development along the Gulf Coast and the concurrent challenges of wastewater treatment, solid waste management, and hazardous waste control are followed by in-depth descriptions of nine Texas and four Louisiana sites, all representative of problems far beyond the Texas-Louisiana coast.

Book Synopsis Competitive European Peripheries by : Heikki Eskelinen
Download or read book Competitive European Peripheries written by Heikki Eskelinen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Europe's space is in a flux. Earlier cores and peripheries in Europe are experiencing a profound transformation. The driving forces include, amongst others, Western European economic and political integration, and Eastern European transition. We are also witnessing fundamental technological and organisational restructuring of industrial systems. Information technology and telecommunications are rapidly altering the requisites for comparative advantage. Peripherality is being determined more by access to networks than by geographical location. Economies of scale can be attained in distributed networks of production with good access to markets as well as in large agglomerations. Clearly, these changes also call for new perspectives in regional analysis. This book derives its impetus from an Advanced Summer institute in Regional Science which was arranged in Joensuu, Finland, in 1993 under the auspices of the European Regional Science Association. Some of the papers, which were discussed at the institute, were thoroughly revised for the present purpose. In addition, chapters on specific topics were specially written for the volume. In most contributions, the focus is on the Nordic countries and their internal peripheries. They form a particularly interesting case in assessing prospects for the multi-faceted centre-periphery confrontation in Europe.
Book Synopsis A Twentieth-century History of United States Population by : Russell O. Wright
Download or read book A Twentieth-century History of United States Population written by Russell O. Wright and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A statistical reference compiling census data from 1900 through 1990 and comparing data for each region, state, and major city within the US. Wright (author, statistical volumes) enlivens this material with concise commentary teasing out the social and political implications of, for example, the northern migration to the southern "sunbelt" or how the Brooklyn Dodgers' move to Los Angeles in 1958 dovetails, not coincidentally, with that city's rapid population growth. He also speculates about increased growth and decline in the states and cities by the year 2000 based on current data. Includes, of course, tables. Lacks an index. Book Synopsis Regional Innovation Systems by : Hans-Joachim Braczyk
Download or read book Regional Innovation Systems written by Hans-Joachim Braczyk and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of this book in 1995, there has been a worldwide innovation-led economic boom and a subsequent slump, meaning enormous change has also occurred at the level of regional economies. The new edition registers this change and provides an interesting test of the robustness of the original arguments in the book. Not least, more industrial policy making is influenced by the RIS analysis, and many national and regional governments have adopted RIS approaches, along with related instruments like promotion of industry clusters, academic entrepreneurship, regional venture capital and science-led development strategies.
