Download or read book Regional Initiatives on Nuclear- and WMD-free Zones written by Michael Hamel-Green and published by United Nations Publications UNIDIR. This book was released on 2005 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The initial years of the new millennium have seen little substantive progress in nucleararms control. Recent challenges for nuclear non-proliferationinclude: the non-entry into force of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT); the 1998India and Pakistan nuclear weapon tests; the withdrawal of North Korea from the NonproliferationTreaty (NPT); the ambiguous status of Iran's nuclear energy developmentprogramme and past Iraqi NPT violations under Saddam Hussein. The strategy of establishing regional NWFZs is generally seen as both a non-proliferation and security-enhancing measure for the regions themselves, and as a partial step towards the eventual global elimination of nuclear weapons. Currently some 107 countries and the larger part of the globe are part of regional NWFZs while NWFZs for such conflict-prone areas such as the Middle East, South Asia, Northeast Asia and Central and Eastern Europe are in various stages of consideration.

Book Synopsis Constructing Regional Security by : W. Durch
Download or read book Constructing Regional Security written by W. Durch and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book William Durch examines conventional weapons proliferation since World War II, the role of arms transfers in fueling regional conflict, and prospects for curbing the global arms trade. Noting that supply side arms control efforts, which seek to constrain the companies and countries that produce and distribute major conventional weapons, have a poor international track record, Durch argues for a broader approach that tries to get at the demand side of the equation. Addressing the political and regional dynamics that impel arms acquisitions, he looks at how arms control might be combined with confidence and security-building measures to contain demand, and how value-based arms trade control measures like 'codes of conduct' could be implemented in stepwise fashion consistent with US national interests in regional stability.
Book Synopsis The Role of Military Assistance in the Problem of Arms Control by : Catherine McArdle
Download or read book The Role of Military Assistance in the Problem of Arms Control written by Catherine McArdle and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any examination of arms control proposals with respect to the developing areas must take into full consideration the role of military assistance with respect not only to the absolute level of regional armament but also to the in terests and commitments of both the aided nations and the major powers. The attempt is made to sketch out a basis for such consideration, to describe the nature and scope of military assistance programs in the Middle East, Latin America, and Africa, and to suggest the significant problems these programs pose for any future regional arms control arrangements.
Book Synopsis A Middle East Free of Weapons of Mass Destruction by : Seyed Hossein Mousavian
Download or read book A Middle East Free of Weapons of Mass Destruction written by Seyed Hossein Mousavian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-17 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The establishment of a Middle East zone free of nuclear weapons, a concept more recently broadened to cover all weapons of mass destruction (WMD), has been before the international community for decades. In this book, two experts from the region explore why the matter remains unresolved, and outline a comprehensive yet achievable roadmap to a Middle East free of WMD. Weapons of mass destruction pose an existential threat to global peace and security. But nowhere is it more urgent to stem their spread than in the Middle East, a region fraught with mistrust and instability. Accounting for these geopolitical realities, including the ongoing talks to curb Iran’s nuclear program, the authors present a practical and innovative strategy to a Middle East free of weapons of mass destructions (WMD). They outline a phased approach toward disarmament in the region, prescribing confidence-building measures and verification tools to create trust among the region’s governments. Their vision also sees the realization of a WMD-free zone within a broader regional agenda for security and cooperation to advance socioeconomic and political progress. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of international relations, politics and security studies in the Middle East.

Download or read book Confidence and Security Building Measures in the New Europe written by Zdzislaw Lachowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The adaptation of the 1990 CFE Treaty and the Vienna Document 1994 of the Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures were both completed by the November 1999 OSCE Istanbul summit meeting. In the new century, Europe will continue to elaborate further co-operative security arrangements to better respond to new risks and challenges in the field of security and help create stability in areas of tension and conflict. The aim is twofold: to strengthen the pan-European process of building confidence and security; and to develop measures and arms control-related arrangements below the continental level - at the regional and subregional levels. This research report examines the record of CSBMs in Europe as well as regional arms control efforts in the former Yugoslavia in the 1990s. It contains important reference material on military security endeavours of this type.

Download or read book Enhancing Regional Security Agreements Through Cooperative Monitoring written by Arian Leigh Pregenzer and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper proposes that strengthening regional capabilities for formulating and implementing arms control and confidence-building measures is a tangible method of enhancing regional security. It discusses the importance of developing a regional infrastructure for arms control and confidence building and elucidates the role of technology in facilitating regional arms control and confidence-building agreements. In addition, it identifies numerous applications for regional cooperative monitoring in the areas of arms control, resource management, international commerce and disaster response. The Cooperative Monitoring Center at Sandia National Laboratories, whose aim is to help individual countries and regions acquire the tools they need to develop their own solutions to regional problems, is discussed briefly. The paper ends with recommendations for establishing regional cooperative monitoring centers.
