Book excerpt: Excerpt from Regeneration of Aspen by Suckering on Burned Sites in Western Wyoming The resulting data were used to plot sucker num ber and height growth changes on the different areas for 6 years following burning or clearcutting and to develop predictive models. Season of burning and preburn and posthum parameters were used as independent variables and posthum number of suck ers as the dependent variable. The preburn inde pendent variables consisted of the number, age, height, and diameter of suckers before burning; elevation, incident solar radiation (frank and Lee and mean diameter of old trees. The posthum independent variables were the number of new suckers the first fall following burning and the number of year-old suckers the second growing sea son after burning. Dependent variables were the number of year-old suckers present the second fall following burning and the number of' old suckers present the sixth year following burning. Regres sion analyses were performed to determine the best fitting relationships that were also judged to be bio logically reasonable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Condition Guide for Aspen Ranges of Utah, Nevada, Southern Idaho, and Western Wyoming Aspen stands vary widely in size. They may occur as islands of trees separated by openings of varying size, or as a more or less contin uous forest. The term, aspen type, as used in this publication refers to all these areas. It includes not only the areas overshadowed by aspen, but also the openings in the aspen forest. It does not include areas of aspen mixed with more than 50 percent of conifer trees, however, or more than 50 percent of oak and maple. Book excerpt: The year 1865 was bloody on the Plains as various Indian tribes, including the Southern Cheyenne and the Southern Sioux, joined with their northern relatives to wage war on the white man. They sought revenge for the 1864 massacre at Sand Creek, when John Chivington and his Colorado volunteers nearly wiped out a village of Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho. The violence in eastern Colorado spread westward to Fort Laramie and Fort Caspar in southeastern and central Wyoming, and then moved north to the lands along the Wyoming-Montana border.

Book excerpt: This book provides case studies and general views of the main processes involved in the ecosystem shifts occurring in the high mountains and analyses the implications for nature conservation. Case studies from the Pyrenees are preponderant, with a comprehensive set of mountain ranges surrounded by highly populated lowland areas also being considered. The introductory and closing chapters will summarise the main challenges that nature conservation may face in mountain areas under the environmental shifting conditions. Further chapters put forward approaches from environmental geography, functional ecology, biogeography, and paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Organisms from microbes to large carnivores, and ecosystems from lakes to forest will be considered. This interdisciplinary book will appeal to researchers in mountain ecosystems, students and nature professionals. This book is open access under a CC BY license.
