Book excerpt: This pilot project set out to identify the unique needs and issues related to providing settlement services to resettled (Syrian) refugees in order to better understand how to help frontline staff work with refugee clients in the immediate and long-term. [...] The purpose of the interviews was to gather information about the challenges, gaps and needs of frontline settlement workers from others in the sector who work closely with them. [...] Many expressed frustration about the chaos that ensued as service providers across sectors failed to share information and collaborate proactively to meet the needs of the newcomers. [...] As a result of the first focus group's lively discussion and expressed desire to remain connected, information and resources on various settlement and public service topics were shared with subscribers of the Refugee Settlement Workers email group. [...] This, combined with the high needs of many of the refugees, has highlighted system and resource gaps affecting the settlement process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global refugee crisis is staggering in scope. The United Nations Refugee Agency reported that 79.5 million people were displaced worldwide in 2019, and over half of all displaced persons were under eighteen. As the number of children and teenagers seeking asylum continues to grow, the impact of displacement on a young person’s well-being and development over the long term requires further study. In Finding Safe Harbour Emily Pelley investigates the current response to refugee youth in Canada by highlighting how Halifax, Nova Scotia, as a mid-sized urban centre, has mobilized services and resources to support young people seeking refuge. Opening with a broad contextual introduction to the global crisis of displacement and the impact of violence and armed conflict on young people, Pelley focuses on the reciprocal adaptation that is required for the long-term integration of displaced youth into the receiving society. A concise and illuminating study on refugee resettlement, Finding Safe Harbour concludes with an in-depth discussion of how cities can optimize resilience resources through meaningful engagement with refugee youth.

Book Synopsis Refugees, Self-Reliance, Development by : Easton-Calabria, Evan
Download or read book Refugees, Self-Reliance, Development written by Easton-Calabria, Evan and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2022-06-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evan Easton-Calabria’s critical history of refugee self-reliance assistance brings new dimensions to refugee and international development studies. The promotion of refugee self-reliance is evident today, yet its history remains largely unexplored, with good practices and longstanding issues often missed. Through archival and contemporary evidence, this book documents a century of little-known efforts to foster refugee self-reliance, including the economic, political, and social motives driving this assistance. With five case studies from Greece, Tanzania, Pakistan, Uganda, and Egypt, the book tracks refugee self-reliance as a malleable concept used to pursue ulterior interests. It reshapes understandings of refugee self-reliance and delivers important messages for contemporary policy making. The first chapter is available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence.
