Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extremely Reform Judaism is one of the world's fastest growing denominations and also its most misunderstood-ever since the ancient forefathers first lifted their eyes to God to ask, "Why can't we have a Christmas Tree?" How to Be an Extremely Reform Jew pokes irreverent yet good-natured fun its subject, with chapters on the mandatory and optional Extremely Reform Jewish holidays; maintaining the Extremely Reform Jewish home; diaspora travel tips; Extremely Reform rites of passage (circumcision, bar mitzvah, intermarriage); and how to deprogram your Extremely Reform child after he has joined a religious cult. Highlights include "The Ten Suggestions"; a "Feast and Fast Yo-Yo Diet Guide to Jewish Holidays"; and "Glengarry Glen Purim, a David Mamet Purim Play." This humorous illustrated guide contains numerous quotations from ancient Extremely Reform Jewish texts, such as, "He who gives a coin to the poor is rewarded with six blessings, but he who makes a pledge to charity receives a free tote bag," and, "Thou shalt not stand outside the synagogue on the High Holy Days scalping thy tickets to the services." First published by Avon Books in 1994, the new edition preserves the content of the original in fresh paperback and ebook formats. It's an ideal gift for Hanukkah or any occasion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the book that American Jews and particularly American Reform Jews have been waiting for: a clear and informed call for further reform in the Reform movement. In light of profound demographic, social, and technological developments, it has become increasingly clear that the Reform movement will need to make major changes to meet the needs of a quickly evolving American Jewish population. Younger Americans in particular differ from previous generations in how they relate to organized religion, often preferring to network through virtual groups or gather in informal settings of their own choosing. Dana Evan Kaplan, an American Reform Jew and pulpit rabbi, argues that rather than focusing on the importance of loyalty to community, Reform Judaism must determine how to engage the individual in a search for existential meaning. It should move us toward a critical scholarly understanding of the Hebrew Bible, that we may emerge with the perspectives required by a postmodern world. Such a Reform Judaism can at once help us understand how the ancient world molded our most cherished religious traditions and guide us in addressing the increasingly complex social problems of our day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reform Movement in Judaism In October, 1897, I published in the Jewish Quarterly Review an article entitled "The Progress of the Jewish Reform Movement in the United States." This article was the beginning of a series of further studies on the reform movement in Judaism. These studies, which form the chapters of this book, aim to present a connected story of the progressive movement in Judaism, the most striking Jewish religious phenomenon of modern times. It has been possible in this survey to take account only of the corporate activities which translated the theories of the reformers into practice. Many statements of individual scholars and writers, however interesting as contributions to the store of liberal Jewish thought, could not be included, since this is not a history of the literary output, but of the practical achievements of reform. This point can be well illustrated by adverting to the case of Russia. There a number of prominent writers have pleaded strongly for reforms in religious practice and belief, but no public official steps have been taken towards carrying out these reforms. The reform movement has found no lodgement in the corporate and congregational Jewish life of Russia, hence no chapter is devoted to Russia in this work, however illuminating might be the statements that can be culled from the writings of Russian Jewish authors. It has been my aim to present as objectively as possible the purposes and accomplishments of the reform movement. We are still too near the beginning of the movement to take account of ultimate effects and results. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Designed specifically with students in mind, the text contains pedagogical features and referencing to assist the reader. Never before published critical Jewish writings included with the additional benefit of contextualisation and commentary from a leading authority in the field. The themes are traced through the writings of prominent Reform rabbis from 1840 till today as they wrestle with major questions of faith and modernity. 'Jonathan Romain celebrates difference with clarity, conviction and understanding. It is an instructive voyage of religious discovery' - from the Preface by Sir Martin Gilbert Reform. Judaism is one of the most dynamic forces in the Jewish world. It dominates American Jewry, is bridging gaps in secular Jewish communities in Israel and occupies a leading place in the religious life of Britain today. It is instrumental in the rejuvenation of Jews within the former Soviet Union and in Europe it has helped to rekindle the embers of Jewish communities devastated by the Holocaust. And yet books offering access to Reform Judaism material and original sources are distinctly rare. Reform Judaism and Modernity: A Reader therefore is a unique opportunity for students of Reform Judaism, and those with a general interest in Judaism, to enjoy fully the wide range of writings that are here presented as the essence of Reform Judaism. Book excerpt: In Antisemitism in North America, the editors have brought together an impressive array of scholars from diverse disciplines and political orientations to assess the condition of the Jews in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. The contributors do not always agree with each other, but they offer perspectives of why the Jewish experience in North America has neither been free from antisemitism nor ever so unwelcoming and dangerous as the countries from which they came. Contributors examine antisemitism in culture, politics, religion, law, and higher education.
