Contributors analyse objects and weapons as status symbols, as evidences of cultural contacts, as ideological devices, etc. Divided into regional sections which, for once, do not focus on Scandinavia, chapters deal with the representations of weapons and certain kinds of tools (such as axes and sickles) in different prehistoric, protohistoric and traditional community contexts all over the world. The major concern is to discuss the possible meanings of these embodied signs in different areas and periods, since meanings are permeable both to time and space. Book excerpt: Este trabajo se ocupa de la relación hipotética que podría establecerse entre el arte rupestre y el paisaje en el que aquel se localiza, basada en las características locacionales del primero. El conjunto de arte rupestre estudiado es el llamado "arte levantino", localizado en la parte oriental de la Península Ibérica. Este arte rupestre puede ser dividido en dos grupos estilísticos, a saber, levantino y esquemático. A pesar de que esta clasificación tiene serios problemas que han sido ampliamente expuestos, ha sido utilizada en la presente tesis para evaluarla desde un punto de vista distinto al propiamente estilístico. Al mismo tiempo, el objetivo principal de esta tesis era analizar la localización de las estaciones de arte rupestre para intentar sintetizar una estructura geográfica a partir de ellas, que eventualmente pudiera interpretarse como un "sistema" de arte rupestre. Se han usado para ello varias escalas y unidades de análisis distintas, de manera que pudiera ser evaluado el contraste entre ellas: local, microrregional, regional y peninsular. Tres son las fuentes principales de datos: el Corpus de Pintura Rupestre Levantina, perteneciente al Departamento de Prehistoria, Instituto de Historia, CSIC; el Expediente UNESCO, depositado en el Instituto para la Conservación del Patrimonio, Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte; y el trabajo de campo propio. Las estaciones de arte rupestre han sido perfectamente situadas con toda esta información. Los rasgos geográficos y culturales más importantes elegidospara caracterizar cada estación de arte rupestre son : la altitud, la pendiente, la orientación, el sustrato geológico, el uso del suelo registrado, la localización topográfica y la distancia a agua y caminos. Esta información se extrajo de la cartografía contenida en el Sistema de Información Geográfica elaborado para el Estudio. Se han hecho análisis estadísticos comparativos de los valores de estas variables para las estaciones de arte rupestre y un grupo de puntos aleatorios creado para cada una de las escalas de análisis. Los resultados pueden resumirse como sigue: el arte rupestre no se localiza aleatoriamente en el paisaje, y los grupos estilísticos pueden ser diferenciados en términos de sus localizaciones, producidas por las diferentes elecciones de los pintores. Los contextos local y regional son los más apropiados para el estudio del arte rupestre, que puede ser entendido solamente desde un punto de vista amplio e inclusivo. Finalmente el estudio local revela la existencia de sistemas reales de arte rupestre, en los que ambos estilos son complementarios: construyen un paisaje por medio de la señalización de lugares especiales en él. Estos sistemas son de hecho económicos, funcionales: el arte rupestre levantino se puede relacionar con la formación social conocida como neolítico, lo que significa que la construcción del paisaje que representa debería ser ligada principalmente a actividades económicas productivas, y no con actividades de caza y recolección, como se ha mantenido hasta ahora. En definitiva, en el origen del surgimiento del arte rupestre de este ámbito peninsular están procesos históricos subyacentes que propician la consolidación de la transformación de la sociedad primitiva en una sociedad dividida.

Book excerpt: Archaeology of Prehistoric Art, Volume 1 Atlantic Rock Art is a rock art tradition which includes emblematic motifs such as cup-marks, cup-and-rings and lines, known to several countries on the Atlantic seaboard. Design and Connectivity springs from an inter-regional study of this tradition, based on an original and innovative methodology applied to an empirical dataset. The project builds on Richard Bradley's work, investigating differences and similarities in Atlantic Art over study areas in five countries: Scotland, England, Ireland, Spain and Portugal. It applies a multi-scalar methodology developed under the principles of Relational Ontology and Assemblage Theory, providing a dynamic perspective on the empirical data. A thorough categorical scheme was scrutinised using a Presence/Absence Matrix, spatial analysis (fieldwork and GIS) and the development of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to relate and explore the relationships and connectivity between study areas. Concepts of developmental psychology support the idea of intentional teaching and cultural transmission.
