Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From Letters on the American Rebellion Second - Because if President Lincoln succeeds, four millions of human beings and their progeny forever, will be relieved from slavery and beastly degradation. Third - Because if President Lincoln does not succeed, the fetters of these four millions and their progeny to endless ages, so far as the mind can scan, will be riveted and confirmed, and because; if this should occur through the want of our sympathizing aid, the curse of God will rest upon us. Fourth - Because America, freed from slavery, will offer a happy home, fifty times larger than England, to which the surplus population of Europe can resort for ages to come, and where they can enjoy full proteo tion, free schools, a free church, and undisputed political equality with all classes. They will perhaps be too many for one volume, but you can make a selection from them, preserving all the most important. I told my friends in Birmingham that they had a great advantage over other towns, because they had you as a teacher on the great American question. I think I read all your letters as they appeared, and I believe and say it with out flattery, that nothing more exact, on the great Struggle was written in England during the War. The facts were correct, your knowledge complete, and your faith in the final issue of the conflict never failed you for an instant. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Philosophy of the American Rebellion I shall not dispute with Mr. Stephens his grand truth that Our new. Government is based upon exactly the opposite idea to that which forms the basis of the United States Gov ernment. I must say, however, I do not think the new sh'air any improvement; and the argu ments advanced in support of it are not such as were advanced by our forefathers. Perhaps, as he says. They were in error - they were funda mentally wrong, but I have still so greats veneration for the names of Washington, Jed'er son, Franklin, and their glorious compeers, that my mind is unwilling to substitute in their pla ees, Yancey and Keitt and Stephens and Davis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mud and Guts: A Look at the Common Soldier of the American Revolution The average American in those days was about what he is today: a small property owner who admired independence and occasion ally was even known to practice it. Then, as today, he resented being governed and taxed by a bunch of remote and powerful bureaucrats. He grumbled a lot over little tyrannies such as stamp acts and tea taxes - but a revolution? The very word causes a shud der to run up the bourgeois spine, and if there ever were, and are, two bourgeois societies, they're England and America. Most people would rather be moderately comfortable and safe than stand up and fight for an illusive term like independence. It has been said that if there had been a back door in the Alamo there would be no Texas. Likewise, if the royal administrators who ran the colonies had had an ounce of sense and perception, our hard-nosed radicals, such as Tom Paine, would never have pre vailed and there would have been no revolution, or rebellion, or whatever it was. The British were really nuts to have let all this happen. But that's the way things go when bureaucrats feel safe. They become blind and arrogant. Those were confusing times, however. It's easy today to say. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History of the Great American Rebellion, Embracing Its Causes, Events and Consequences, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches and Portraits of Its Principal Actors, and Scenes and Incidents of the War The conflict, though not long in comparison with most of the great wars of History, has, nevertheless, been attended with losses, sufferings and privations, and with changes for the common good, rarely equaled. At the Opening of the great contest, we began to record its most impor tant events, and have, from time to time, corrected the record from official and authoritative sources. We have taken time. It was not our ambi tion to issue the first History of the war, but to wait the full development of particular events before we recorded them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One difficulty in writing a balanced history of the American Revolution arises in part from its success as a creator of our nation and our nationalistic sentiment. Unlike the Civil War, unlike the French Revolution, the American Revolution produced no lingering social trauma in the United States—it is a historic event widely applauded by Americans today as both necessary and desirable. But one consequence of this happy unanimity is that the chief losers of the War of Independence—the American Loyalists—have fared badly at the hands of historians. This explains, in part, why the account of the Revolution recorded by self-professed Loyalist and Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Massachusetts, Peter Oliver, has heretofore been so routinely overlooked. Oliver's manuscript, entitled "The Origins & Progress of the American Rebellion," written in 1781, challenges the motives of the founding fathers, and depicts the revolution as passion, plotting, and violence. His descriptions of the leaders of the patriot party, of their program and motives, are unforgiving, bitter, and inevitably partisan. But it records the impressions of one who had experienced these events, knew most of the combatants intimately, and saw the collapse of the society he had lived in. His history is a very important contemporary account of the origins of the revolution in Massachusetts, and is now presented here in it entirety for the first time.
