This book was released on 2022-12-31 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an original and timeous snapshot of contemporary lines of argument from various authors in the Global South on the Covid-19 pandemic as a complex emergency at the height of the pandemic. At the time of writing, there were various levels of uncertainties from different countries, citizens, the public and private sectors, industries and economies who were in disarray. The book traces the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic in the province of Wuhan in China, the challenges, and the responses from a multiplicity of countries particularly from the Global South. Of particular importance, the book notes that vaccine uncertainty, limiting the spread of the virus and loss of life and employment, were some of the major challenges that these governments and citizens were confronted with. Also, the sizes of various economies lead to various challenges that the abovementioned governments shouldered. The contributors shed light on various aspects related to the Covid-19 pandemic from various countries in the Global South and include, but were not limited to securitised lockdowns, the use of militaries and complete closures of national (and sometimes fragile) economies, as well as overburdened health systems. These are just some dire consequences of Covid-19 on the public and private sector, industries and economy. The book emphasises that despite myriad challenges reported, there are various lessons that can be learnt in terms of how the countries responded to the pandemic, and in terms of how future pandemics can be handled. Finally, this is an interesting piece of work wherein contributors, as a collective, seek to shed light with regards to the unique perspectives from the Global South and at the same time give some guidance, related to their specific areas of focus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A chronicle, a memoir, a reflection on the pandemic, and a cultural analysis of the new spatial, social, and epistemological forms that have arisen with it, this volume weaves together cultural history, aesthetics, and urban and digital studies. It looks at the particular ways in which the possibilities for touch, touching and being touched, both physically and affectively, are reconfigured by the pandemic. How are love, care, and humanity’s complex relationships with technology and nature played out in the interval between abandoned city centres and digitally mediated gatherings? How can we comprehend the reconfiguration of relationships through the human response to the pandemic as an experience that concerns us all but affects each of us in different ways? How do we think through the technological and material dependencies that the pandemic situation establishes? And how does this allow us to imagine the world beyond the pandemic—both utopian and dystopian? The essays in this book explore the new forms of intimacy and distance that are developing in the wake of COVID-19, offering a distinctive, topical analysis in the fields of urban and digital studies.

Book excerpt: This book presents a sociological study of the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of India. It invites readers to understand disasters and crises as triggers of radical transformations in society, changing the very nature of every day and the meaning of normal. It discusses the processes through which society accepts, internalizes and reinvents a new way of life. It provides insights into its impact on the individual, family, economy and the state and the relationships not only between them but also within them. The chapters draw attention to the concerns of the vulnerable sections of the population – the aged, children, women, the disabled, migrant labour and the economically backward classes. The chapters are written in an engaging style, and each chapter investigates the way societies think about the risk, threat and harm and the ways to navigate crises of all kinds. As such, the book provides a key read for academics, students and administrators, as well as general readers confronted by an existential crisis caused by the pandemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reflects on different regional and national experiences of the COVID 19 pandemic, with contributions from India, Thailand, Singapore, Australia, Italy, United States and Canada. This book draws upon a number of approaches but especially the works of Deleuze and Guattari, Agamben, Derrida, Foucault, Habermas, Latour and Serres. It looks at the methodological aspects of treating the pandemic, focuses on laying out the posthuman condition of the event largely problematizing the immanence of life which affirms the transversal Deleuzian ethic of life, and extends the politics of life to the domain of immunology. Together, they make it apparent that the pandemic is a multi-faceted event, or many different kinds of events--virological, informational, phenomenological, social and discursive. The authors skilfully develop these different dimensions of the pandemic event and show the relations between them. These essays will enrich the reader's understanding of the pandemic and its effects, while demonstrating the depth and breadth of the resources that humanities scholarship can mobilize to help us understand such phenomena. This volume will be useful to students of posthumanism, medical humanities, health communication, political communication, semiotics, literature, cultural theories, and major strains of thought from contemporary continental philosophy.

Book excerpt: Winner of the 2022 Gradiva® Award for Best Book – Historic Moment for Reflection! This book offers real-time, intimate reflections on Dr. Friedberg’s patients as they struggle with COVID-19 and its disruptive, dispiriting fallout. Through a Screen Darkly identifies the psychological distress caused by the pandemic, examining how the particular elements of COVID-19 – its ability to be spread by those who seem not to have it, its intractability, the long-term uncertainty that it engenders – leave even relatively stable people shaken and unsure of the future. The book examines how, amidst radical uncertainty and the prospect of massive social change, such people learn to become resilient. The main theme of the book is that, of necessity, we learn to adapt. Though we still can only see "darkly," we can call on the resources that we have, as well as those we can reasonably acquire, so as to retain a sense of our dignity and purpose. Through a Screen Darkly examines what is possible now as the pandemic runs its course. It makes no predictions of how all this will ultimately play out, but offers a time capsule of how people have coped with a disease that landed suddenly and that we still do not fully understand. Offering a series of intense encounters with worried, traumatized people, this book will be invaluable to in-training and practicing psychiatrists, as it points to the several possible directions for our national, psychological recovery from the pandemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book brings together reflections, lessons and insights relating to the post Covid-19 era in Zimbabwe. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has immensely affected all facets of humanity globally. Its impact on Zimbabwe is evident through its effect on socio-economic and education systems, politics, religion, infrastructural development, and health delivery systems. This book provides scholarly introspections into the lessons drawn from the pandemic in an effort to re-imagine the future possibilities of public health in Zimbabwe and beyond. Providing a platform for research that seeks to re-think global public health matters from a Decolonial school of thought, the book asks questions such as: What is the role of religion, linguistics, communication, education, economics, politics, and science in preparing Zimbabwe for possible future pandemics? How can the lessons drawn from the pandemic inform scholars to re-imagine the future trajectories of the country in the various domains? How can researchers evaluate the power and economic dialectics of COVID-19, navigate the tumultuous challenges generated, and come up with appropriate systems for future pandemics? Offering a realistic picture of the post COVID-19 era in Zimbabwe, the book will be a key resource to students and researchers across the fields of political communication, science communication, decolonial discourse, language and culture, as well as African Studies more broadly.

While many of us are still recovering from the collective longings for a 'back to how things were before the pandemic,' we have also realized that circumstances keep changing in unpredictable ways"--

Book excerpt: The importance of people in organizations has been growing in the organizational environment over the last decades. Digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and sustainability have already reinforced the role of people as a differentiating element for the success and survival of organizations. These phenomena alone are already challenging for people. There is a consensus that the world of work as we knew before the pandemic will not return. Human resource management (HRM) practices must prepare organizations for the future of work. The Handbook of Research on Challenges for Human Resource Management in the COVID-19 Era analyzes state-of-the-art HRM in a digital transformation context and investigates the factors that promote more learning and development dynamics in organizational contexts. It also evaluates the impact of HRM policies on individuals, organizations, and societies. Covering topics such as corporate social responsibility, job satisfaction, and electronic performance monitoring, this major reference work is a crucial resource for leaders from public and private companies, human resource professionals, specialists, students and educators of higher education, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a grounding in complexity theory, demonstrating how it can influence and shape social work interventions in policy, management, and practice, as well as forming an epistemological and methodological basis for research. It provides a contemporary theoretical basis for social work practice, equipping social workers to work in a 21st-Century world. The authors argue that the history of social work demonstrates the profession's engagement with the social and structural problems of each era since its emergence 150 years ago. However, in the 21st Century, such things as globalisation, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change have highlighted that existing theories and practice models are insufficient to the task of working with the complicatedness of contemporary life in a fast-changing world. Distilling the central tenets of Complexity Theory and the notion of complex adaptive systems in partnership with pragmatism, the book provides practice perspectives and guidelines which build on social work's enduring commitment to understanding the person-in-context. The recognition that social workers require conceptual and theoretical agility to work across micro, meso and macro 'levels' remains central, but the argument is made that their focus and practice must primarily be at the meso level. The authorship of combined academic and practice expertise enables such perspectives to be brought to life through the theoretical and practical analysis of conceptual and 'real-world' challenges. The book consists of 13 chapters organized in three sections: Part I: Complex Practice in a Complex World Part II: Thinking Complexity in Practice Part III: Thinking Complexity in Public Policy, Research and Education Complexity Theory for Social Work Practice encourages social workers to 'think complexity' and 'act pragmatically'. It is intended for final-year social work students; academics and researchers working in a range of disciplines, primarily in the social work field but also in the areas of sociology, psychology and anthropology; and practitioners in policy, research, management and practice settings.

Book excerpt: The present volume investigates the relevance of language teaching and learning in the contemporary job market, highlighting how language graduates can provide a substantial contribution to the multilingual needs of the UK. It also explores how the sudden spread of COVID-19 impacted on the acceleration of the online pedagogical shift which had already been foreseen by Jisc and developed at a higher speed than predicted. Ultimately, by looking into the forced online pivot, this volume furthers a reflection on how the ‘new normal’ is contributing to drive pedagogical innovation.
