Book excerpt: Fear of Life is an in-depth study of the human condition within modern culture Alexander Lowen challenges conventional thinking and contends that neurotic behavior stems from a fear of life, and represents the individual's unconscious effort to overcome that fear. But one cannot do so. One can only suppress or deny it, at the cost of spontaneity and being at ease. Lowen explains that being a person requires that one stop their frantic doing, and take time out to breathe and to feel. If one has the courage to accept and feel the pain and hurt, despair and sadness, and inner emptiness or anxiety in one's life, one can heal trauma and gain pleasure, fulfillment, and joy....the object of Bioenergetic Analysis.

Book excerpt: Emetophobia--the disproportionate fear of vomiting or being in the presence of someone vomiting--affects millions of people yet is seldom discussed. Part-memoir, part clinical history, Dara Lovitz provides a brutally honest account of her life as an emetophobe. Written with her therapist, Dr. David Yusko, her story unravels the mystery of emetophobia. Lovitz spent years trying traditional talk therapy and self-help books--nothing seemed to reduce her anxiety. In desperation, she tried the radical exposure therapy. With a therapist's guidance, she exposed herself to the thing she had avoided all her life. Within weeks she showed improvement and within months she had overcome emetophobia. The history of exposure therapy for treating emetophobes is covered.

Caught up in a maze of intrigue and sheer terror after acquiring the mirror, the lives of this young couple soon take a decided turn for the worse. With the help of Cindy's sister and brother-in-law, the four are unwittingly drawn into a frightening and macabre doorway into another world - the world of the dead, commonly referred to as Purgatory. Three decades earlier, a greedy and treacherous character had invaded the lives of Minnie and Melvin Link, the original owners of the mirror. Unexpectedly granted a supernatural power over the Jason's minds, Minnie attempts to communicate her desperate plight to them with terrifying and unforeseen consequences. Reflections of Fear is a tale of terror involving a desperate attempt to find justice for the victims of an unsolved thirty-year-old murder. The characters depicted in the story are both realistic and unforgettable. This is one book that you will find very hard to put down.

Book excerpt: A revolutionary guide to acknowledging fear and developing the tools we need to build a healthy relationship with this confusing emotion—and use it as a positive force in our lives. We all feel fear. Yet we are often taught to ignore it, overcome it, push past it. But to what benefit? This is the essential question that guides Kristen Ulmer’s remarkable exploration of our most misunderstood emotion in The Art of Fear. Once recognized as the best extreme skier in the world (an honor she held for twelve years), Ulmer knows fear well. In this conversation-changing book, she argues that fear is not here to cause us problems—and that in fact, the only true issue we face with fear is our misguided reaction to it (not the fear itself). Rebuilding our experience with fear from the ground up, Ulmer starts by exploring why we’ve come to view it as a negative. From here, she unpacks fear and shows it to be just one of 10,000 voices that make up our reality, here to help us come alive alongside joy, love, and gratitude. Introducing a mindfulness tool called “Shift,” Ulmer teaches readers how to experience fear in a simpler, more authentic way, transforming our relationship with this emotion from that of a draining battle into one that’s in line with our true nature. Influenced by Ulmer’s own complicated relationship with fear and her over 15 years as a mindset facilitator, The Art of Fear will reconstruct the way we react to and experience fear—empowering us to easily and permanently address the underlying cause of our fear-based problems, and setting us on course to live a happier, more expansive future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Daily Reflections on Divine Mercy" was written to provide an awakening to the abundant Mercy of God. It offers daily reflections and prayers to help deepen the day-to-day faith life of every Catholic so that you can understand the abundance of Mercy poured forth from the Heart of our Savior as it is revealed in the writings of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska. "Divine Mercy in My Soul: Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska" is soon to become a classic spiritual book that everyone is encouraged to read in their lifetime. However, many find this invitation intimidating, not just because of the width of her book, but because of the depth of its message on The Divine Mercy in each of Saint Faustina’s notebook entries. This book, "Daily Reflections on Divine Mercy," was written with the hope of guiding you through Saint Faustina’s Diary and her six notebooks of reflections. It can be used on its own to help you pause and reflect on the beauty of Jesus’ messages to her, or as a companion book, as you simultaneously read Saint Faustina’s Diary. "Daily Reflections on Divine Mercy" offers 365 daily teachings, reflections and prayers based upon the pages of Saint Faustina’s Diary. The structured way to use this daily reflection book is to do just that…reflect upon one page each day. However, some may feel called to skip around a bit, read a few reflections at a time, or return to a particular reflection through which God spoke to you. Therefore, though this book was written with the intent of providing one reflection for each day of the year, the best way to use it is any way you feel called and the way that benefits your relationship with God the most. The first paragraph for each day offers this author’s insights to the words and teachings of Saint Faustina. The section of her Diary used for the day’s teaching is marked so that the reader can also read her Diary first hand so as to see the primary source that the author of this book took inspiration from for that day’s reflection. Though the primary text of the Diary is never quoted, nor are the reflections of this book exact representations of the Diary, they do provide the foundational basis for the spiritual message shared in each reflection. The second paragraph for each day offers a short reflection put more as a question to the reader. It offers the same insight in a different format so as to enter more deeply into the message of the day. Finally, each daily reflection ends with a prayer focused upon the message and reflection for that day. The reader is encouraged to pray this prayer several times. Ideally, it is prayed first thing in the morning, again during the day, and again at night as an examination on how well the daily message was received. As you seek to survive the world we live in, allow these pages to be a font of Mercy for you from God. Allow God’s Divine Mercy to penetrate your heart so that you will know the abundance of His love and be more prepared to share that love with others.

Book excerpt: With Daily Reflections for Educators, Coaches, Leaders, and Life, build a practice of daily reflection to transform your teaching and leadership. Reflection is the best way to bring “sticky” sustainable change. Developing a reflective mindset helps us become self-empowered, lifelong problem solvers who create meaningful and fulfilling lives both personally and professionally. Coaches, leaders, and all agents of change in early childhood education need to hone their own reflective practices not only to gain self-awareness and make mindful decisions but also to facilitate reflection with the people they support. Through reflection, we make intentional choices to achieve the success we desire. Reflection is not an event, not just an activity, but a lifestyle. This book offers 12 reflective themes for cultivating both personal and professional self-realization and becoming a transformational change agent who helps others do the same. There are 365 entries, one for each day of the year. Each entry has a quotation with a commentary to feed the day’s reflection, as well as a suggestion for reflective practice. One entry every week offers the opportunity to review the previous week or sets up a focus for the coming week.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his powerful autobiography, Reflections of Challenges and Triumphs, first-time author Lincoln Wallace offers an introspective glance into his life’s journey from suffering to triumph. Living an emotionally impoverished childhood, filled with self-abnegation and doubt, Lincoln could have gone on a downward spiral. Instead, paying heed to his own inner voice and holding fast to his dreams, he lifted himself out of the toxicity of negative beliefs and erroneous misconceptions about his personhood and his destiny - which, he ultimately discovered, only he could define. Latching on to his natural gift for the martial arts, Lincoln learned the art of respectful self-defense. Through seeking – and encountering - the best part of himself, he continuously reaches out as a guide and mentor to his admiring family members and students. He especially wants the disenfranchised, marginalized youth of our society to understand that they can lift themselves up – even if circumstances aren’t ideal or they don’t have role models to emulate, and even if they are told that they are not good enough. Such heartless criticisms – outright falsehoods - were meted upon Lincoln by his mother, who berated and downgraded him. Nonetheless, he pursued – and achieved – his objective of “becoming someone,” enriching lives in the process. “I want kids to know that if I did it, they can do it, too. What good is having experiences and gaining knowledge, if lessons can’t be shared?” the author observes. His story demonstrates that, no matter how downcast a heart may be, hope inheres in self-belief, holding one’s head high, having faith in a brighter dawn, and knowing, with every breath, that such will come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lurking Fear by H. P. Lovecraft is a horror short story by American writer H. P. Lovecraft. Written in November 1922, it was first published in the January through April 1923 issues of Home Brew. The story is narrated by an unnamed seeker of strange horrors who is investigating the massacre of a community of some six dozen backwoods degenerates in an obscure region of the Catskills, a massacre which occurred during a particularly violent electrical storm and seems to have been perpetrated by an unidentified clawed beast. The narrator soon discovers that the most sinister legends of the region center around the abandoned Martense mansion, and he decides together with two companionsto spend the night in the big old house... Plot In 1921, an unnamed monster-hunter travels to Tempest Mountain, in the Catskills range, after reports of various attacks by a group of unidentified creatures against the local inhabitants reaches the media. A month before, an unusually large, destructive thunderstorm had drifted over the region. Many homes were destroyed, seemingly by the storm, but upon closer inspection, the destruction seemed to be left by an enraged beast. The affected area, originally home to only 75 citizens, was completely destroyed, leaving no survivors. Gathering what information he can from the locals, the hunter finds out that most of the legends surround the foreboding Martense mansion, a century-old Dutch homestead, which has been disregarded by the police as it is apparently abandoned. The hunter, bringing with him two companions as his bodyguards, enters the mansion at night, just when another thunderstorm approaches. He takes up residence in the room of Jan Martense, a member of the family believed to have been murdered. Despite their careful preparation, keeping watch in shifts and sleeping armed, the group eventually drift off to sleep. The hunter wakes up to discover both his companions missing and, in a flash of lightning, witnesses a demonic shadow briefly cast upon the mansion's chimney by a grotesque monster. Neither of his companions are ever seen again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflections on the One Life is a book of daily expressions or pointers to spiritual awakening—one pointer for each day of the year. The clarity is astounding. This demystifies spiritual awakening, strips it of all fundamentalism, and presents it in a clear and easy-to-read way. This is about the timeless presence that you already are. Each pointer peels away beliefs, positions, and ideas about spirituality, including the idea that you exist as a separate self, only to reveal—in the end—that nothing is excluded. Its central message is that there is only One Life appearing in a myriad of forms. You are that One Life. This is when the distinctions between absolute and relative, form and formlessness, timelessness and time, no self and self, One and many, and all other boundaries collapse into a great and loving mystery that Scott calls 'This’.
