Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hilary Kornblith presents a new account of reflection, and its importance for knowledge, reasoning, freedom, and normativity. Philosophers have frequently extolled the value of reflective self-examination, and a wide range of philosophers, who differ on many other things, have argued that reflection can help to solve a number of significant philosophical problems. The importance of reflecting on one's beliefs and desires has been viewed as the key to solving problems about justification and knowledge; about reasoning; about the nature of freedom; and about the source of normativity. In each case, a problem is identified which reflective self-examination is thought to address. Kornblith argues that reflection cannot solve any of these problems. There is a common structure to these issues, and the problems which reflection is thought to resolve are ones which could not possibly be solved by reflecting on one's beliefs and desires. More than this, he suggests that the attempt to solve these problems by appealing to reflection saddles us with a mystical view of the powers of reflective self-examination. Recognition of this fact motivates a search for a demystified view of the nature of reflection. To this end, Kornblith offers a detailed examination of views about knowledge, reasoning, freedom, and normativity in order to better understand the motivations for extolling self-reflective examination. He explores both the logic of these views, and the psychological commitments they involve. In the final chapter, he offers a more realistic view of reflection, which draws on dual process approaches to cognition.

By doing so, it offers the first shift from the individual reflective practitioner to processes of collective and public reflection. The unique and varied contributions focus on the development of notions such as public reflection, collective reflection, and critical reflection. In doing so, they provide critical insights into new thinking and approaches to the role of reflection in organizations, as well as the conceptualization and delivery of learning and change. Organizing Reflection will be of interest to scholars working in business, professional, management and organization studies, to human development academics, and to scholarly practitioners in organizations.

Book excerpt: Hugo Wilcken's first novel, The Execution—a taut, psychological mystery about an average person who commits an accidental murder—got the kind of rave reviews authors dream of: He was compared to Camus and Hitchcock. Now, in his second novel, The Reflection, the comparisons seem even more appropriate: It's a smart, creepy, steadily absorbing mystery about an average law-abiding citizen who finds himself inexplicably caught up in a case of mistaken identities—with one of his own patients. When psychiatrist David Manne is asked by a friend who's a New York City Police detective to consult on an unusual case, he finds himself being asked to evaluate a criminal who's the exact opposite of himself—an uneducated laborer from the Midwest who seems overwhelmed by modern day Manhattan circa 1948. But when that laborer tells David that he's not who the police say he is, David slowly begins to believe it may be true Unable to stop himself, David begins to look into how the police handle the man, and the hospital they take him to . . . and begins to suspect that the man is caught up in some kind of secret governmental medical testing. Realizing he's got to rescue his patient, David quickly finds himself battling forces that seem to be even bigger than he suspected, and that now have him in their sights. When he suddenly finds himself caught with a patient's i.d. papers on him, he decides on a risky course that seems his only way out: To change his identity, and enter even deeper into the conspiracy, if he's to find out how to escape it. Written in relentlessly probing prose with a delicious plot complication seemingly on every page, this is one of the most thought-provoking, chilling, and suspenseful novels you'll ever read.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of introspection stands at the interface between questions in epistemology about the nature of self-knowledge and questions in the philosophy of mind about the nature of consciousness. What is the nature of introspection such that it provides us with a distinctive way of knowing about our own conscious mental states? And what is the nature of consciousness such that we can know about our own conscious mental states by introspection? How should we understand the relationship between consciousness and introspective self-knowledge? Should we explain consciousness in terms of introspective self-knowledge or vice versa? Until recently, questions in epistemology and the philosophy of mind were pursued largely in isolation from one another. This volume aims to integrate these two lines of research by bringing together fourteen new essays and one reprinted essay on the relationship between introspection, self-knowledge, and consciousness.

Book excerpt: The capacity to reflect – individually and with others – is considered valuable in teacher professional development internationally. In the field of Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language, reflective practice has been deemed to be a precious tool at the pre-service level and in the ongoing development of teachers. Despite the importance of teacher reflection, the field of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Higher Education has tended to overlook this topic and especially its collaborative and emotional elements. This book proposes a new and practical model for engaging teachers in transformational learning through an ‘emotionalized’ version of reflection. More specifically, the Collaborative, Appreciative, Reflective Enquiry (CARE) model represents a guide for teachers who wish to engage in reflective practice alone and with others in an appreciative context. As such, this book will be invaluable to in-service language teachers and teacher educators who are committed to realizing their potential as educators and human beings through growth that only emancipatory reflection and positive emotionality can bring.

Book excerpt: Harav Hagaon Rav Moshe Shapiro of blessed memory (1935-2017), whose Torah insights grace these pages, dedicated his life to convey the core principles of Torah faith in all its multifaceted dimensions. He once told the author the Emunah is the heart and soul of his every Torah insight. The depth and breadth of his creative approach, his profound understanding of Torah wisdom along with its immediate relevance to life, and his ability to clarify even the most esoteric concepts are legendary. For over forty years, he has given countless weekly lectures in every area of the Torah to the most diverse audiences. And by his own testimony, he always introduced at least one novel insight each time he spoke. But he never wrote. He said it would require him to focus on past insights and he always sought new ones. He was a veritable wellspring of Torah. The current series attempts to capture his words in writing as near as possible to the way they were spoken. Sources for quoted texts have been added and concepts have been divided into sections. The work is entirely in English to benefit those with minimal background. Alongside all quotes, the original Hebrew text is cited to accommodate those familiar with the original, and to underscore various inflections in translation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pre-reflective Consciousness: Sartre and Contemporary Philosophy of Mind delves into the relationship between the current analytical debates on consciousness and the debates that took place within continental philosophy in the twentieth century and in particular around the time of Sartre and within his seminal works. Examining the return of the problem of subjectivity in philosophy of mind and the idea that phenomenal consciousness could not be reduced to functional or cognitive properties, this volume includes twenty-two unique contributions from leading scholars in the field. Asking questions such as: Why we should think that self-consciousness is non-reflective? Is subjectivity first-personal? Does consciousness necessitate self-awareness? Do we need pre-reflective self-consciousness? Are ego-disorders in psychosis a dysfunction of pre-reflective self-awareness? How does the Cartesian duality between body and mind fit into Sartre’s conceptions of consciousness?
