Book excerpt: A MEDITATION ON IDENTITY, CULTURE, AND HEALING IN CHILDREN SEPARATED FROM ORIGINAL FAMILY. Millions of our world¿s children are forced through the curtain of separation from original family. Among the numerous causes are poverty, abuse, neglect, natural disaster, epidemic, immigration, incarceration, addiction, war, genocide, oppression, and child labor. While each experience is its own, all such separations cleave the child heart and mind into a common root wound of vacancy and drift. In the face of such woundedness, our children have the power for healing and growth waiting within them. Every aspect of their lives is affected by an often solitary quest for beauty and belonging. We who raise and serve these displaced young, through our embrace, are a vital factor in their ultimate healing. Jaiya John has shared time with thousands of uprooted children through his human relations work. Reflection Pond offers us his personal meditation, a looking glass for what these youth have whispered into his spirit. They have shared their need for reflection ponds: people, places, and experiences through which their own beauty and purpose are reflected back to them. Through allegory and parable, poetry and prose, Jaiya John draws from the natural world around us to unveil the magical inner life of children and youth. Here is a revelatory positioning of the human mirror. In its face we glimpse magnificence.

Book excerpt: A beautifully written collection of essays for anyone who’s ever lived in that unwieldy group called family—a story that takes us from Iowa to the high country of Wyoming and Montana as a woman and her husband search for the perfect place to raise their five daughters and five sons. Rooted in real-life experience, this unique essay collection of passion, intimacy, work, religion, puberty, love and loss, and the struggle to be steadfast in times of enormous social change reads like a novel—full of lively characters, spirited dialogue, and a landscape that takes you from Iowa to the high country of Wyoming and Montana. As the chapters unfold, one focused on each child, Virginia Tranel and her husband search for the ideal place to raise the five daughters and five sons born to them between 1957 and 1978. Tranel artfully weaves daily moments with world events as she reflects on how our culture affects our decisions. She offers candid observations on everything from her reproductive choices and feminism's influence on her thinking to sibling rivalries and her family's emotional response when an architect son emails firsthand reports of the horrors of September 11. Whether considering the issues intrinsic to marriage and child-raising, or questioning her own common sense, her insights are always provocative and deeply moving.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Except for remodeling out first home, my wife and I had no experience in building yet dared to built two homes: a custom one for our growing family and, later, one for our retirement. Though the book is well illustrated, it is not a step-by-step instruction on how to build a home, but one well detailed in all phases of construction. . Our retirement home, built with concrete blocks, reinforced with steel, is a more permanent structure. Let me put it this way: it is not an overstatement if I say our retirement home will last thousands of years, one that will have people wondering, who the heck built a Greek temple on a California mountain? We did not go into the project blindly. The key words are research and taking the time to visit building sites. In my work clothes of white shirt and tie and with clipboard for taking note, I was seen by most laborers as a typical office worker doing his tedious job. Please try to be unobtrusive while questioning workers in different stages of construction. Carpenters were helpful in demonstrating the safe use of power tools. Stucco men loved to show off the different textures they created, Spanish lace their favorite. I strongly recommend that my readers visit construction, and please get permission from a job foreman. Good luck.

Book excerpt: To read Dr. Monita Soni's My Light Reflections, is to try and take the measure of light in its myriad illuminations, the shifting rays that color a landscape stretching from Huntsville, Alabama to Mumbai, Jaipur, the Aravalli hills, to a garden, a wilderness, a "reflection pond," a kitchen, an artist's studio, and a pathology lab. Her book is lesson, a lexicon, a legend, story, journey, travelogue, a gift of laugher and exquisite joy. Dr. Soni's reflections are illuminations; they are moonlight and sunlight, science, and art and "a trajectory of life," to borrow the title of her initial poem. To read her poetry is to truly "step out in pure awe." Dr. Soni's kaleidoscope nourishes the creative spirit as the myriad reflections that bring to view family relationships-the love for a father who quotes the Bhagavad Gita, Arabic poetry, Charles Dickens, and Mark Twain, for a son who lives in Jaipur, a daughter who is described as a moon-maiden. The book is savory "parathas" (griddle-flaky flat bread) and mangos. It is stories of sisters, the very "keepers of each other's identity": it is bed tea, and "butterscotch laughter." My Light Reflections traces the soul's journey to that place within where the "thousand petal lotus blooms." Dr. Soni reminds us as loving earthly beings that "our body is precious; it is our vehicle for awakening." A painter, poet, physician and philosopher, her words are prescriptions for how to live both fully and well.

Book excerpt: Valerie, a third book of poetry by Laurel Highlands Author and Poet William C Semo. When you ask what inspires poetry, it is the friendships of one's life. In this book a dedication of poetry to an old friend who recently passed, one who stood by him and believed in him through his many life struggles. Their friendship, unconditional, always pure and spiritual with a sweet ""I love you."" in parting with one another. ""It is the kind of poetry she liked, the kind she would read. Whether I would hand it to her or just leave it at her doorstep. The kind that I carry with me in my moleskins and whose meaning carries with us all into the hereafter. It is about her and many other things because the heart is all that matters in the end."" -William C Semo

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning: The Candidates: Based on a True Country is not for the faint of heart. It is a political satire of epic disproportion. The story centers on Skip LaDouche and Harry Pinko, the two front-runners campaigning for the presidency of the United States, who have managed to claw, bribe, and scam their way up the political ladder. They are what we’ve come to expect from our leaders: self-serving and unqualified. When Kimmy Faimwhorre, the reality television star that they are both having an affair with, turns up murdered, the candidates take campaigning to its most primal form . . . complete and total destruction of the opposition. Nothing is sacred in this violently comic short novel from Matthew S. Hiley. His wit is sharp and quick, and this story is dark, cynical, and hilarious. Politics-as-usual and pop-culture are thoroughly skewered in one of the most absurd and entertaining stories ever told.

Book excerpt: Have you ever gazed up into the coal-black sky of a warm spring night where no moon can be seen and tried to count the innumerable stars of the sky or pondered how far away the tiniest might be? Did you know God created these stars as well as all the ones too far away to even be seen? Have you ever stood along the banks of a mighty river or even a clear, crisp babbling brook and wondered how far did that water have to travel to get to you at just this moment of time? Did you know that God had to place in motion all that was required, perhaps years or even decades or centuries ago, just for that stream of water to be passing by you at this moment in time?In Moments from the Mountainside, author Jack Droste will put you in the passenger seat next to him as he drives up and down the mountain highways through the curves and turns of the back roads of the east and along the super highways of the farmlands of the upper Midwest as he shares the beauties and majesties of God's creative work. However, the greatest beauty to be seen won't be what is seen by the naked eye but will be seen through the testimony of the apostle Paul who wrote in Ephesians 3:18 (NIV) of the depth and width and breadth of the love of an amazing God: one who loves you so much.Come, let's ride together to see what the apostle Paul meant when he wrote, "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made..." (Rom. 1:20 NIV).
