Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of shock wave reflection was first reported by the distinguished philosopher Ernst Mach in 1878. Its study was then abandoned for a period of about 60 years until its investigation was initiated in the early 1940s by Professor John von Neumann and Professor Bleakney. Under their supervision, 15 years of intensive research related to various aspects of the reflection of shock waves in pseudo-steady flows were carried out. It was during this period that the four basic shock wave reflection configurations were discovered. Then, for a period of about 10 years from the mid 1950s until the mid 1960s, investigation of the reflection phenomenon of shock waves was kept on a low flame all over the world (e. g. Australia, Japan, Canada, U. S. A. , U. S. S. R. , etc. ) until Professor Bazhenova from the U. S. S. R. , Professor Irvine Glass from Canada, and Professor Roy Henderson from Australia re initiated the study of this and related phenomena. Under their scientific supervision and leadership, numerous findings related to this phenomenon were reported. Probably the most productive research group in the mid 1970s was that led by Professor Irvine Glass in the Institute of Aerospace Studies of the University of Toronto. In 1978, exactly 100 years after Ernst Mach first reported his discovery of the reflection phenomenon, I published my Ph. D. thesis in which, for the first time, analytical transition criteria between the various shock wave reflection configurations were established.

Book excerpt: In beloved author Emily March’s novel about a special place and its remarkable residents, a woman betrayed by life discovers the healing power of love in Eternity Springs. Savannah Moore arrives in Eternity Springs alone, determined to put her troubled past behind her. Her handcrafted-soap shop fits right in with the magic of this warm and welcoming community—but the sexy, suspicious local sheriff promises to upset her hard-won happiness. Zach Turner knows this woman means trouble: Maybe to his town. Possibly to his friends. Definitely to his heart. Something about this simmering Southern beauty does crazy things to his committed bachelor status, taunting him with possibilities far beyond his dedication to his sometimes dangerous job. So when Savannah’s dark past follows her to town, wreaking havoc with both their lives, Zach will fight for all he’s worth—for a love he can’t afford to lose. Includes an excerpt from Emily March’s Eternity Springs novel Miracle Road Praise for Emily March and Reflection Point “Eternity Springs is a small town in the Colorado Rockies, populated with people I delight in visiting again and again.”—New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery “With passion, romance, and revealing moments that will touch your heart, [March] takes readers on an unhurried journey where past mistakes are redeemed and a more beautiful future is forged—one miracle at a time.”—USA Today “The matchmakers are at it again in Eternity Springs and, with a bit of angel dust, will help the hero and heroine discover the healing power of love. All the characters are wonderfully complex and the surprise involving one of them is nicely done. Readers will be eager to reach the end, yet sad to get there.”—RT Book Reviews “Reflection Point is a sweet heartwarming novel that will leave you feeling giddy.”—Joyfully Reviewed “For a wonderful read, don’t miss a visit to Eternity Springs.”—New York Times bestselling author Lisa Kleypas “[March] has a way of touching something soul deep in each of her characters, and bringing that feeling to life with every word.”—Coffee Time Romance

It concisely covers all stages in exploration activities (data field acquisition, data processing and interpretation), supplementing the main text with a wealth of (>350) illustrations and figures. The book concentrates on the physics of the applied principles, avoiding intricate mathematical treatment and lengthy theoretical reasoning. A further prominent feature is the inclusion of a separate chapter on 3D surveying techniques and another, equally important chapter on seismic digital signals and the aliasing problem, which is presented in an accessible form. The book is designed to meet the needs of both the academic and industrial worlds. University students and employees of oil-exploration companies alike will find the book to be a valuable resource.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to the design, implementation, and operation of line of sight microwave link systems The microwave Line of Sight (LOS) transport network of any cellular operator requires at least as much planning effort as the cellular infrastructure itself. The knowledge behind this design has been kept private by most companies and has not been easy to find. Microwave Line of Sight Link Engineering solves this dilemma. It provides the latest revisions to ITU reports and recommendations, which are not only key to successful design but have changed dramatically in recent years. These include the methodologies related to quality criteria, which the authors address and explain in depth. Combining relevant theory with practical recommendations for such critical planning decisions as frequency band selection, radio channel arrangements, site selection, antenna installation, and equipment choice, this one-stop primer: Describes the procedure for designing a frequency plan and a channel arrangement structure according to ITU current standards, illustrated with specific application examples Offers analytical examples that illustrate the specifics of calculations and provide order of magnitude for parameters and design factors Presents case studies that describe real-life projects, putting together the puzzle pieces necessary when facing a real design created from scratch Microwave Line of Sight Link Engineering is an indispensable resource for radio engineers who need to understand international standards associated with LOS microwave links. It is also extremely valuable for students approaching the topic for the first time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author coherently presents the physical concepts, mathematical details and methodology for optimizing results of reservoir modeling, under conditions of isotropy and anisotropy. The most common form of anisotropy – the transverse isotropy, is dealt with in detail. Besides, practical aspects in reservoir engineering – such as interval isotropic or anisotropic properties of layered media; identifying lithology, pore-fluid types and saturation; and determining crack/fracture-orientations and density - form the core of discussions. This book incorporates significant new developments in isotropic and anisotropic reflection processing, while organizing them to improve the interpretation of seismic reflection data and optimizing the modeling of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The text contains exercises and problems, and solutions are provided for the exercises. This book is written primarily for graduate/postgraduate students and research workers in geophysics.

Book excerpt: This book is written for advanced earth science students, geologists, petroleum engineers and others who want to get quickly ‘up to speed’ on the interpretation of reflection seismic data. It is a development of material given to students on the MSc course in Petroleum Geology at Aberdeen University and takes the form of a course manual rather than a systematic textbook. It can be used as a self-contained course for individual study, or as the basis for a class programme. The book clarifies those aspects of the subject that students tend to find difficult, and provides insights through practical tutorials which aim to reinforce and deepen understanding of key topics and provide the reader with a measure of feedback on progress. Some tutorials may only involve drawing simple diagrams, but many are computer-aided (PC based) with graphics output to give insight into key steps in seismic data processing or into the seismic response of some common geological scenarios. Part I of the book covers basic ideas and it ends with two tutorials in 2-D structural interpretation. Part II concentrates on the current seismic reflection contribution to reservoir studies, based on 3-D data.
