Book excerpt: Developing accurate methods to survey fish is of vital importance to the monitoring of our marine ecosystems and establishing a basis for evaluating environmental anthropogenic change. Underwater video is a popular survey method that can avoid several limitations associated with underwater visual censuses (UVC), most notably, variable response to divers. Baited underwater video (BUV) is a commonly used survey method that avoids diver influence and yields statistically powerful results. However, the obtrusive nature of some BUV systems may cause similar behavioural responses to those reported for UVC methods. This study compares the relative densities of snapper Pagrus auratus inside and outside a marine reserve as measured using BUV, baited ‘stealth’ video (BSV), and an inconspicuous unbaited underwater video (UUV) to determine the most appropriate method for estimating abundances. An unbaited BUV frame (UBF) was used to test whether BUV underestimates densities of larger snapper in fished areas due to the presence of an obtrusive BUV frame. This study also presents a method for generating absolute density estimates using footage from a stationary video camera. Underwater video surveys were conducted inside and outside the Cape Rodney to Okakari Point Marine Reserve in north-eastern New Zealand from May to September 2016. Relative densities (expressed as reserve:non-reserve ratios) for legal (≥ 300mm) snapper were much higher for BUV and UBF compared to UUV and BSV. Proportions of larger fish sampled by the different methods were similar inside the reserve, but differed markedly outside the reserve, confirming the notion that BUV undersamples larger fish in non-reserve areas due to their wariness of the BUV structure, and therefore overestimates the “reserve effect”. A hump-shaped distribution of abundance shown by UUV and BSV suggests a higher reserve abundance is due to a “reserve effect” rather than a behavioural bias associated with BUV. A lack of a plateau suggests a larger reserve is needed to fully protect snapper populations. Using the new method developed for stationary video analysis, this study provides the first estimates of snapper absolute density and biomass per unit area on a temperate reef system inside and outside a marine reserve.
