Book excerpt: One of the most important objectives accomplished during the present analysis has been the upgrading of the AFGL computer program SAGG (Satellite Altimetry and Ground Gravity). This program serves in the determination of the global geoid and the earth's gravity field, based on the combination of satellite altimetry observations and gravity anomalies. A typical feature of SAGG is the simultaneous recovery of both the orbital parameters and the spherical harmonic potential coefficients. The short arc adjustment mode makes these determinations possible without the requirement of highly precise reference orbits. An important refinement in SAGG has been the differentiation of the radial distance to a sub-satellite geoidal point with respect to the state vector parameters. A practical benefit of this feature is faster convergence in the adjustment. The new version of SAGG has been used in a combined adjustment of real data, in conjunction with a (14, 14) geopotential model. Comparison of internal precision has demonstrated the beneficial effect of adding altimetry data to the existing body of gravity anomaly data. The recovered geoid over most of the globe shows good agreement with gravimetric geoids obtained from independent sources. This is especially true of the areas covered by the GEOS-3 satellite when compared with the earlier reported results of the AFGL computer program SARRA.

Book excerpt: The computer program SAGG (Satellite Altimetry and Ground Gravity) has been used to determine the global geoid and the earth's gravity field, based on the combination of altimetric observations and gravity anomalies. A typical feature of SAGG is the simultaneous recovery of the orbit parameters and the spherical harmonic potential coefficients. The short arc adjustment mode makes these determinations possible without the requirement of highly precise reference orbits. In this mode, the state vector components are subject to adjustment and represent, in fact, a set of independent weighted parameters. Orbits good to approximately 20 m are adequate for precise reductions. Altimetric data processed by SAGG was gathered by the GEOS-3 satellite over adjacent portions of the Indian and South Pacific Oceans and a portion of the NORTH Atlantic; gravity anomaly data is represented by mean anomalies from over 2200 1 deg x 1 deg geographic blocks. The recovered geoid over most of the globe shows good agreement with gravimetric geoids. This is especially true of the areas covered by GEOS-3 when compared with the earlier reported results of the AFGL computer program SARRA (Short Arc Reduction of Radar Altimetry).

Book excerpt: The point mass technique, which supplements a spherical harmonic expansion of the potential, allows short wavelength detail to be added to previously computed long wavelength geoidal features without distorting the latter. Recently, the AFGL short-arc approach to satellite altimetry has been modified to allow point mass adjustments. GEOS-3 altimeter residuals in the North Atlantic region were obtained from a first adjustment in terms of spherical harmonics and state vector parameters. A subsequent point mass adjustment was performed on these residuals to obtain the short wavelength geoid and gravity anomalies. Advantages of the point mass model stem from a flexible deployment of the new parameters (point mass magnitudes) in an area of interest that permits important computer savings when processing large amounts of satellite data in a local region.

Book excerpt: We previously described (14,14) spherical-harmonic global adjustments of satellite altimetry using the AFGL short-arc technique supplemented with point masses to allow incorporation of short-wavelength geoidal detail. Recently, we have also investigated another technique to enhance short-wavelength detail: least squares collocation with noise. Both methods provide a means to determine a high resolution gravity field on a local, regional or global scale. Statistical comparisons of these two methods have been made in selected areas and the results tabulated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings include selected papers from the International Review Workshop on Satellite Altimetry Cal/Val Activities and Applications, held in Chania, Crete, Greece, on 23-26 April 2018. Organised in the context of the European Space Agency Project “Fiducial Reference Measurements for Altimetry” the workshop was cosponsored by the International Association of Geodesy (in particular by the IAG Commission 2, Gravity Field), the European Space Agency, the European Union (the Copernicus Programme), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), Space Geomatica P.C., and the Municipality of Chania. The workshop presented the latest research in the field of satellite altimetry calibration and altimetry applications for monitoring ocean changes and improving Earth observation in an objective, continuous, homogeneous and reliable manner, free of errors and biases. Further, it supported long-term monitoring of climate change by providing a better understanding of environmental changes in the world's oceans, terrestrial surface waters, and Arctic and Antarctic Regions. The outcome was the creation of a scientific roadmap with procedures, protocols, guidelines, and best practices to help international groups working on satellite altimetry to establish SI (Système International d'Unités) traceability of their measurements, results and data products.

It allows for new insights into marine geodesy, ice sheet movements, plate tectonics, and for the first time provides high-resolution bathymetry for previously unmapped regions of our watery planet and crucial information on the large-scale ocean features on intra-season to interannual time scales. Satellite Altimetry and Earth Sciences has integrated the expertise of the leading international researchers to demonstrate the techniques, missions, and accuracy of satellite altimetry, including altimeter measurements, orbit determination, and ocean circulation models.Satellite altimetry is helping to advance studies of ocean circulation, tides, sea level, surface waves and allowing new insights into marine geodesy. Satellite Altimetry and Earth Sciences provides high resolution bathymetry for previously unmapped regions of our watery planet.Satellite Altimetry and Earth Sciences is for a very broad spectrum of academics, graduate students, and researchers in geophysics, oceanography, and the space and earth sciences. International agencies that fund satellite-based research will also appreciate the handy reference on the applications of satellite altimetry.

Book excerpt: The prediction of mean gravity anomalies from other anomalies and satellite altimeter data is described using the technique of least squares collocation. The equations derived are then used in simulation studies, using altimeter data alone, to estimate the accuracy to which mean gravity anomalies can be determined with respect to an ellipsoidal reference field and a degree 12 reference field.
