Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A computer adaptive test was administered over the telephone by reading items and response alternatives to 144 individuals who had recently enlisted in the U.S. Army and had completed the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB). Subject responses were entered into a computer by the telephone interviewer thereby allowing the adaptive test program to estimate aptitude with approximately 10 verbal items. Analyses indicate that the Telephone Test is highly correlated with the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT) in the sample we tested, r = .66; the bivariate correction for range restriction estimated this population correlation to be .81. A confirmatory factor analysis produced a four factor solution with the Telephone Test loading at a very high level (.91) on a Verbal factor, which had a substantial loading (.72) on a higher order factor. The magnitude of the factor loadings and the administration time (5 to 10 minutes) indicate that the procedure provides an excellent measure of crystallized Verbal aptitude that can be incorporated into brief telephone interviews and used to estimate AFQT and general aptitude."--DTIC.

Book excerpt: The Computerized Adaptive Screening Test (CAST), which is capable of operating on a stand-alone microcomputer system in recruiting stations, was designed and developed to replace the Enlistment Screening Test (EST) currently in use. CAST correlates .87 with the Armed Forces Qualification Test (AFQT). It is being further refined. EST is used by all services; thus, as recruiting operations are automated, CAST has potential value to them all for reducing administrative and clerical burdens on the recruiter. (Author).

Book excerpt: Used worldwide in assessment and professional certification contexts, computerized adaptive testing (CAT) offers a powerful means to measure individual differences or make classifications. This authoritative work from CAT pioneer David J. Weiss and Alper Şahin provides a complete how-to guide for planning and implementing an effective CAT to create a test unique to each person in real time. The book reviews the history of CAT and the basics of item response theory used in CAT. It walks the reader through developing an item bank, pretesting and linking items, selecting required CAT options, and using simulations to design a CAT. Available software for CAT delivery is described, including links to free and commercial options. Engaging multidisciplinary examples illustrate applications of CAT for measuring ability, achievement, proficiency, personality, attitudes, perceptions, patients’ reports of their symptoms, and academic or clinical progress.

Book excerpt: Bringing together several key elements needed to identify the most promising themes for future research in selection and classification, this book's underlying aim is to improve job performance by selecting the right persons and matching them most effectively with the right jobs. An emphasis is placed on current, innovative research approaches which in some cases depart substantially from traditional approaches. The contributors -- consisting of professionals in measurement, personnel research, and applied and military psychology -- discuss where the quantum advances of the last decade should take us further. Comprehensive coverage of the selection and classification domain is provided, including a broad range of topics in each of the following areas: performance conceptualization and measurement, individual differences, and selection and classification decision models. The presentations in each of these areas are integrated into a set of coherent themes. This integration was the product of structured group discussions which also resulted in a further evolution of some of the ideas presented.

Book excerpt: This book traces the development of computerized adaptive testing (CAT) from its origins in the 1960s to its integration with the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) in the 1990s. A paper-and-pencil version of the battery (P & P-ASVAB) has been used by the Defense Department since the 1970s to measure the abilities of applicants for military service. The test scores are used both for initial qualification and for classification into entry-level training opportunities. /// This volume provides the developmental history of the CAT-ASVAB through its various stages in the Joint-Service arena. Although the majority of the book concerns the myriad technical issues that were identified and resolved, information is provided on various political and funding support challenges that were successfully overcome in developing, testing, and implementing the battery into one of the nation's largest testing programs. The book provides useful information to professionals in the testing community and everyone interested in personnel assessment and evaluation. Book excerpt: The arrival of the computer in educational and psychological testing has led to the current popularity of adaptive testing---a testing format in which the computer uses statistical information about the test items to automatically adapt their selection to a real-time update of the test taker’s ability estimate. This book covers such key features of adaptive testing as item selection and ability estimation, adaptive testing with multidimensional abilities, sequencing adaptive test batteries, multistage adaptive testing, item-pool design and maintenance, estimation of item and item-family parameters, item and person fit, as well as adaptive mastery and classification testing. It also shows how these features are used in the daily operations of several large-scale adaptive testing programs.

National guidance for their detection and management have been published in the US and in Europe. Despite this, the rate at which depression is recognized and managed in primary and secondary care settings remains low and suggests that many clinicians are still unsure how to screen people for mood disorders. Against the backdrop of this problem, the editors of this volume have designed a book with a dynamic two-fold purpose: to provide an evidence-based overview of screening methods for mood disorders, and to synthesize the evidence into a practical guide for clinicians in a variety of settings--from cardiologists and oncologists, to primary care physicians and neurologists, among others. The volume considers all important aspects of depression screening, from the overview of specific scales, to considerations of technological approaches to screening, and to the examination of screening with neurological disorders, prenatal care, cardiovascular conditions, and diabetes and cancer care, among others. This book is sure to capture the attention of any clinician with a stake in depression screening.

The book not only addresses improvements in the quality of educational measurement, innovations in (inter)national large scale assessments, but also several advances in psychometrics and improvements in computerized adaptive testing, and it also offers examples on the impact of new technology in assessment. Due to its nature, the book will appeal to a broad audience within the educational measurement community. It contributes to both theoretical knowledge and also pays attention to practical implementation of innovations in testing technology.
