The sourcebook presents publications on the development of science and technology; the International Technology Gap and the NIEO; and transnational corporations and technology. The other groups of publications compiled mainly focus on the anatomy of corporate technology transfer; technology transfer and host countries; and sectoral analysis, wherein several case studies are included. The last two sets of reference materials are concerned with technology transfer and the home country and its regulation. This sourcebook will be invaluable to those in need of lists of reference materials on transnational corporations.

Book excerpt: Since it was first published in 2000, The Change Book has proven to be a landmark document for the addictions treatment and recovery services field. It is the first publication of its kind to outline the multidimensional aspects of instituting change specifically for addiction-related agencies. Within The Change Book are practical steps towards bringing about and maintaining change. However, change is not easy. Effective technology transfer efforts involve change at a variety of levels within the overall system. The Change Book offers a comprehensive blueprint for change, which will help direct each aspect of the design, development, implementation, evaluation and revision of a technology transfer plan. Factors influencing the success of a technology transfer initiative, effective change strategies, and Principles for successful adoption to occur are addressed. Today The Change Book is effectively guiding professionals across the country to create sustained change. Its design helps frontline treatment practitioners to implement new treatment modalities within their agencies, as well as government officials in state departments work toward system-wide changes. Although targeted for the addictions treatment and recovery services field, The Change Book has been successful in guiding change within other industries and fields of study. Demand for this publication continues to outnumber supply, as requests for The Change Book are made daily. For this reason, the Addiction Tecnology Transfer Center (ATTC) Network (www.ATTCnetwork.org) will now offer the second edition of The Change Book through an innovative distribution method made in partnership with AuthorHouse(R). The Change Book is now readily available through AuthorHouse(R), as well as a broad array of online venues.

Book excerpt: Praise for The Art & Science of Technology Transfer "Phyl Speser's personality comes across in the text-complicated, intrigued, highly rational, insightful, rich in context, and fun. She had me smiling throughout. This work represents the next chapter of the technology transfer profession's development, where it will be all about getting to market with a studied awareness of value. Phyl gives us the tools to get there with a great read, just the focus we are needing in the profession." —Jill A. Tarzian Sorensen, JDExecutive Director, Johns Hopkins Technology Transfer, The Johns Hopkins University "Phyl Speser is one of the pioneers in developing the modern practice of technology transfer and in The Art & Science of Technology Transfer, she shares her experiences and philosophy in a well-written, highly readable book that is packed with case studies of both success and failure." —Ashley Stevens, Director, Office of Technology Transfer, Boston University "This readable book is a must for anyone wanting to look at the technology transfer process from a novel viewpoint. Rather than just recite the nuts and bolts of the process, it illustrates theoretical concepts with real world, practical examples. Any reader will come away with new and useful ways of looking at, and doing, this business." —Kenneth H. Levin, PHD, Deputy DirectorUniversity of Chicago Office of Technology & Intellectual Property (UCTech) "An amazing compendium of philosophy, science, and practical experience that converge to form, literally, the art and science of technology transfer. On any given page, you may find a quote from Plato, a mathematical formula, an intriguing anecdote by the author, or a practical 'how-to' statement. It's written in a very engaging style that keeps you turning from page to page . . . there's enough material in this book to launch a college course on Technology Transfer-nothing is left out!" —David Snyder, Vice President-Technology Commercialization Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) "This is an excellent introduction to sorting out the complex world of technology transfer, eminently useful to both practitionersand students. The text is thorough, filled with the practical examples, details, and guidelines useful to learn and practice this often-arcane subject, while never losing sight of an overarching paradigm for getting new technology out of the lab and into the market. I am certain that other teachers will find it as valuable as I have." —Lawrence Aronhime, Faculty Associate and Lecturer, The Johns Hopkins University, 2005 recipient Johns Hopkins Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award "A clear and entertaining presentation of the complexities of technology transfer and intellectual property, this book provides usable, practical information to students and practitioners on every page. The Art & Science of Technology Transfer provides a well-crafted immersion in the processes and practices of moving ideas into the marketplace." —Phil Weilerstein, Executive Director,National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capability for innovation can be developed through a dynamic process involving various stakeholders such as governments, academic and research institutions, and industry with the help of a combination of schemes and programmes for R&D, technology transfer and commercialisation, and for the development of new technology-based industry; backed up by adequate support facilities and suitable institutional mechanisms. The important factors for successful commercialisation of technology include S&T capability, market demand and an agent (an Entrepreneur) which transforms this capability into goods and services, to satisfy such demand. For the technological self reliance, developing countries should encourage academic and research institutions to undertake activities on technology transfer and commercialisation through appropriate policy decisions with greater flexibility wherever required. To deliberate on various issues concerning the technology transfer and its commercialisation, the NAM S&T Centre, in partnership with the Pardis Technology Park (PTP), Tehran, Iran organised an International Training Workshop on 'Commercialisation of Technology' during 23-26 May 2016 at PTP, which brought the scientists, experts and professionals engaged in R&D, policy making and implementation to a common platform for re-assessing and up-gradation of their skills and sharing views and experiences in the transfer and commercialisation of technology. The Tehran Training Workshop was attended by 26 senior professionals from 20 NAM countries, including Cambodia, Cuba, Ghana, India, Iraq, Kenya, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Togo, Venezuela, Zambia and Zimbabwe and the host country Iran. The present book edited by Ms. Sheikha Al Akhzami, Acting Director of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Department at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman is a follow up of the above Training Workshop and comprises 14 papers by the authors from 9 countries covering several important issues related to commercialisation of technologies. The book will be useful to policy makers, researchers, academicians and other professionals involved with various aspects of technology development and its commercialisation across the countries with emerging economies.

Book excerpt: Knowledge transfer between universities, business and the community is a topical subject of increasing importance. The first International Conference on 'Innovation through Knowledge Transfer: Research with Impact', InnovationKT'09, held in Kingston, London, UK, provided a rare and welcome opportunity to share some of the successes of knowledge transfer. The conference attracted 150 delegates and featured 42 oral presentations. This volume, representing the proceedings of the conference, contains 35 papers based on selected conference presentations. The papers are divided into seven sections entitled ‘Key Knowledge Transfer Perspectives’, ‘Knowledge Transfer Case Studies’, ‘Innovative Knowledge Transfer Techniques’, ‘Strategic and Organisational Approaches to Knowledge Transfer’, ‘Knowledge transfer in the Arts and the Community’, ‘Knowledge Transfer Methodology and Practice’ and ‘Innovation and Enterprise’. The first InnovationKT conference was unique in gathering such a tremendous range of knowledge transfer experience and expertise. This volume forms a valuable resource for all those who are involved in knowledge transfer, or wish to know more about it. University academics can read examples of ways in which research can be commercialised, increasing impact and improving relevance. Knowledge transfer practitioners can find out about best practice in their subject and read case studies. Companies can read about how universities can help find solutions to their problems. We recommend this volume as a statement of the benefits that knowledge transfer can bring to all those involved.

Book excerpt: The activities of the Department of Defense (DOD) and its contractors in manufacturing, testing, maintaining, and disposing of military equipment make up a significant portion of the industrial processes conducted in the United States. As is the case with the commercial industries, some of these activities, such as metal plating, have resulted in industrial pollution and environmental contamination. With increasing environmental regulation of such processes in recent decades, defense facilities have been faced with growing compliance issues. Department of Defense efforts to manage, correct, and prevent these problems have included the establishment of the National Defense Center for Environmental Excellence (NDCEE) under the management of the U.S. Army Industrial Ecology Center (IEC). The National Research Council's Committee to Evaluate Transfer of Pollution Prevention Technology for the U.S. Army was formed to identify major barriers to the transfer of pollution prevention technologies and to recommend pathways to success. To address the study objectives, the committee (1) reviewed the NDCEE's technology transfer activities, (2) examined efforts to transfer technology in four areas, two of which were identified at the outset by the NDCEE as successful and two of which were identified as unsuccessful, and (3) identified opportunities for improving the transfer of pollution prevention technologies to maintenance and rework facilities in the Department of Defense and to industrial manufacturing facilities performing defense-related operations.
