It is my intention to reopen issues which have long remained in disrepute in American Psychology: affect, imagery and consciousness. These have lately come to interest neurophysiologists and biochemists more than psychologists. This book explores positive affect, negative affect, and cognition and ideology"--Create. Book excerpt: Integrating significant advances in motivation science that have occurred over the last two decades, this volume thoroughly examines the ways in which motivation interacts with social, developmental, and emotional processes, as well as personality more generally. The Handbook comprises 39 clearly written chapters from leaders in the field. Cutting-edge theory and research is presented on core psychological motives, such as the need for esteem, security, consistency, and achievement; motivational systems that arise to address these fundamental needs; the process and consequences of goal pursuit, including the role of individual differences and contextual moderators; and implications for personal well-being and interpersonal and intergroup relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First used to describe the weariness the public felt toward media portrayals of societal crises, the term compassion fatigue has been taken up by health professionals to name—along with burnout, vicarious traumatization, compassion stress, and secondary traumatic stress—the condition of caregivers who become “too tired to care.” Compassion, long seen as the foundation of ethical caring, is increasingly understood as a threat to the well-being of those who offer it. Through the lens of hermeneutic phenomenology, the authors present an insider’s perspective on compassion fatigue, its effects on the body, on the experience of time and space, and on personal and professional relationships. Accounts of health professionals, alongside examinations of poetry, images, movies, and literature, are used to explore the notions of compassion, hope, and hopelessness as they inform the meaning of caring work. The authors frame their exposé of compassion fatigue with the very Canadian metaphor of “lying down in the snow.” If suffering is imagined as ever-falling snow, then the need for training and resources for safe journeying in “winter country” becomes apparent. Recognizing the phenomenon of compassion fatigue reveals the role that health services education and the moral habitability of our healthcare environments play in supporting professionals’ ability to act compassionately and to endure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present thesis aimed to investigate the mediating roles of positive and negative affect in the context of social support and interpersonal conflict. For this purpose, two studies using data from the Swiss Household Panel (SHP) were conducted. In the first study, the association with spousal support and individual health with respect to the mediating role of positive affect was investigated. To this aim, waves from 2006 to 2010 of the SHP were assessed using autoregressive cross-lagged models in order to consider causal effects. Data analysis was restricted to individuals (585 men, 752 women) who were living in a relationship during all years of assessment and who were older than 18 years. Results suggest that whereas men benefit directly from spousal support, in women, this effect is mediated by joy.In the second study, the mediating influence of negative affect in the context of interpersonal conflict and individual health was examined. Waves from 2000 to 2011 of the SHP were assessed using growth curve modeling to observe changes in self-reported health over time. Here too, only individuals within close relationships were included in the analysis (585 men and 752 women) in order to test for conflicts with closely related persons. Conflicts showed direct negative effects on women’s health; however, in men, this effect was mediated by anger and sadness.

Instead he shows you how to use stress to your advantage and gives you the tools to: - Move stress out of your way using his 'Stress Wall' technique - Make money work for you, instead of you working for money - Instantly improve your mood and stay positive with 'The Happiness Trick' - Get back time and energy by distinguishing bad stress from good - Effectively organise and manage your life to create more time for the things you enjoy The Less-Stress Lifestyle is an invaluable guide for the many thousands of people affected by stress and its related disorders and will help you to rediscover all aspects of your life.
