Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We seek first to document and then to explain the well-known systematic differences between magnitudes (mb) assigned by the PIDC, ISC, and USGS. To do this, we first obtain "classical magnitudes" that as far as possible reproduce the instrumentation and procedures associated with the Veith-Clawson magnitude scale. Though others claim to assign such magnitudes using broadband data, current practice is notably different from the actual Veith-Clawson protocol, and uses measurements made from narrow-band filtered data derived from broadband instruments. We obtain classical magnitudes by making time-domain measurements using WWSSN seismograms simulated from broadband waveforms, thus allowing us to maintain consistency with the original Veith-Clawson magnitude scale. We have obtained Veith-Clawson body-wave magnitudes using simulated WWSSN short-period signals for 21 earthquakes in 1998 and 1999. All of these events have a Veith-Clawson mb that is greater than the PIDC REB mb. The average discrepancy is 0.5 magnitude units. The discrepancy is at least 0.4 mb units for 71% of the station mb observations, with several observations having an offset greater than 1 magnitude unit. Note that the same broadband seismograms underlie these discrepant magnitude values, so this is not an issue of scatter in magnitudes derived from different seismograms. The choice of Gutenberg-Richter, or Veith-Clawson, for the distance correction factor does not strongly affect the resultant event magnitude. The depth assigned to an event by the USGS NEIC in its Preliminary Determination of Epicenters (PDE) is often greater than the depth given by the PIDC REB, especially for shallow events. This is partially due to the fact that the PIDC uses its default depth of 0 km for a significant number of events, rather than solving for an actual event depth. Since an increase in depth will result in a decrease in the magnitude [for a given measurement of log10(A/T) at a given distance, where A is amplitude.

Book excerpt: Traditional seismic yield estimation is performed using body wave magnitude (mb) measured from compressional wave amplitudes recorded across the globe. Stability is obtained by averaging many measurements. These waves traverse the earth's mantle, and are affected by mantle properties, particularly under the source region, as other variations are averaged out. To monitor individual test sites during the testing era, test site corrections were obtained by various means, most notably the Joint Verification Experiment, and applied to obtain yield. To extend yield estimation to broad areas, we must apply an upper mantle correction on the fly. We have investigated two methods to map upper mantle bias over broad areas. The first estimates the bias at individual stations by inverting for corrections that best fit the collection of amplitudes measured at all stations. These measurements were taken from global monitoring agencies, including the International Data Centre (IDC) and National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) bulletins, examined separately. We augment bulletin amplitudes by replicating monitoring agency measurement techniques for non-reporting or temporary stations in regions of particular interest, such as the Korean Peninsula, including State University of New York (SUNY) Binghamton's northeast China and Lamont's Sinpo deployments. The second method compares mb to magnitude derived from regional Lg coda, which is not affected by mantle properties, producing a map of the upper mantle effects across broad areas where earthquakes occur. The station-based technique retains near-site effects that the event-based technique does not, thus, resolving any differences between the two techniques is of great importance.

Book excerpt: A discrepancy between body-wave magnitudes, from the Prototype International Data Centre (PIDC) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), has persisted since 1995, and amounts to a few tenths of a magnitude unit. Since 1999 we have studied the discrepancy between magnitudes published by different agencies and this final report is comprised of two sections. The first, is a stand-alone paper (published in the 2002 November/December issue of the Seismological Society of America's Seismological Review Letters) comparing the PIDC magnitudes with values assigned by a method that as closely as possible reproduces the Veith-Clawson protocol for reporting seismic body wave magnitudes. That protocol is the most clearly specified, or many different body-wave magnitude scales. The second section here, is a report which documents in detail the actual discrepancies between magnitudes assigned by three key agencies - namely, the USGS, the PIDC, and the International Seismological Centre (ISC).

Book excerpt: For nearly 40 years the forensic seismology group at Blacknest have published estimates of the basic parameters of presumed explosions (epicentre, origin time, body-wave magnitude) determined using state- of-the-art methods from bulletin data (usually the International Seismological Centre (ISC) bulletin). These basic parameters are widely considered to be some of the most reliable estimates that are freely available. However, not all presumed explosions have been analysed. Here, we estimate the epicentres and body-wave magnitudes of presumed underground explosions at the Chinese test site in Xinjiang Province using ISC bulletin data, supplemented by P-onset times measured from data recorded by the four UK-type seismometer arrays (EKA, GBA, WRA, YKA). The epicentres are estimated using Joint Epicentre Determination. The body-wave magnitudes are calculated using the Joint Maximum-Likelihood method. This work builds on an earlier report that reviewed epicentres and body-wave magnitudes for 17 presumed Chinese explosions red between 1967 and 1989. A further 11 presumed explosions, dated from 1990 to 1996, are analysed to complete the set. The estimates of the epicentres of the presumed explosions suggest that a number of different regions exist within the test site. The seismograms at each of the UK-type arrays for these presumed explosions appear to display common features which may relate to specific regions of the test site. Here, we attempt to distinguish the different areas of the test site using the P-wave characteristics observed at the 4 UK-type arrays.

Book excerpt: Regional seismic explosion monitoring requires the discrimination of small clandestine nuclear explosions from background earthquakes. most successful teleseismic discriminant, the so-called Ms:mb, discriminant, compares the long-period surface waves magnitude (Ms) with the period P-based body wave magnitude (mb). There are many studies underway to try and extend surface wave magnitude (Ms) estimation to re distances and smaller magnitudes. Another problem that is encountered is how to estimate mb so that the Ms:mb discriminant is meaningful a consistent with teleseismic measures. For small-to-moderate sized events, the teleseismic body wave magnitude, mb(P), cannot be effectively measured due to low signal-to-noise ratio. We develop a stable regional alternative based on the P-coda that scales 1-to-1 with the teleseismic mb(P), but with the advantage of lower variance. Though mb(Lg) and mb(Lg-coda) can be tied to mb(P) for explosions, they overpredict earth magnitudes by ~0.5-1 magnitude units and degrade the performance of the Ms:mb discriminant. In contrast, mb(P-coda) does not exhibit this and can be used to extend Ms:mb to smaller regional events.

Book excerpt: We analyze the theoretical basis for the body wave magnitude: surface wave magnitude (mb:Ms) and Variable Frequency Magnitude (VFM) earthquake/explosion discriminants in light of recent results from numerical modeling of earthquake and explosion dynamics. We examine the effects of source mechanism (double-couple versus point dilatation), source depth, source spectra, and source region elastic structure. We use six three-dimensional finite difference simulations of earthquakes for the earthquake source models, and four empirical (Mueller-Murphy) and four numerical models for explosions in different materials. We estimate that source mechanisms (i.e., quadrupole versus monopole) contributes about .35 magnitude on the average to the separation between earthquakes and explosions on a mb:Ms diagram. VFM discrimination depends primarily on spectral differences between earthquakes and explosions. Theoretical separation of the earthquake and explosion populations is very clear for explosions in granite at frequencies of 2 Hz or greater with mb 4.0. Smaller events may be discriminated using higher frequencies. Separation is not as good for explosions in low velocity materials such as tuff, especially at low yields. For small events, the mb:Ms and VFM discrimination methods work (or fail) for quite different reasons.
