Book excerpt: Strangled by fits of madness, Marjaneh fell from royalty to the depths of society. Becoming a slave to the king of Arubara, she lost all hope due to her uncontrolled outrages. No chance for happiness came her way until the one-eyed stranger, Sleuth Tau, arrived. Sleuth and his one-legged brother, Alexander Tau joined the navy to fight off the pirates that killed their father and brother, enslaving their sisters. Among their tactics, they began a massive slave uprising, hoping to defeat the slavers that raided the coasts. Their fame as warriors spread along the pirate coast as they sought to end piracy, but Alexander disagreed with the methods used by his brother in bringing about this end. Do the ends really justify the means, or can the method corrupt the ideal? Argument over this issue eventually destroyed what remained of their family. In exile, Sleuth is recruited by Marjanehs owner to defend his besieged and corrupted city against certain doom. Can Sleuth Tau find redemption in Arubara, or is he lost to the violence of the sea forever?

Kept as a slave for most of his life, Dante has suffered far too much brutality, and even he would admit that the harshness of life has turned him from a civilised, obedient omega into a broken man bent on violence and revenge. However, an odd twist of fate leads to Dante being bought by Antoine, a wealthy alpha with a soft spot for brutalised omegas. He sees the potential in the suffering young man and takes him back to his estate, determined to help him recover from the cruelty of his past. But winning Dante's trust was never going to be an easy task, and even less so in a society that refuses to acknowledge that an omega could ever be anything other than a slave.

Book excerpt: In this examination of the practical and ethical implications of slave redemption the authors deal with questions such as: Does redeeming slaves actually increase the demand for -and so the number of- slaves? And what about cases where it is far from clear that redemption will improve the material condition or increase the real freedom, of a slave?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Without a doubt, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step; but a journey to hell and back, may never be a pleasant story to tell. By all human standards, it is undeniable that rising from the dungeons of bondage to the highest offices in the land is nothing short of a miracle. Similarly, rising from the doldrums of Apartheid to the highest offices in the land is equally, nothing short of a miracle. Similarly, rising from the gas chambers and concentration camps of Auschwitz back to the promise land is equally, nothing short of a miracle. But what is even more miraculous is that, such shameful atrocities and such heinous crimes against humanity have all happened in human society. Nevertheless, such amazing triumphs of good over evil and such astounding achievements of beleaguered people, from the most humble beginnings to the highest levels of human dignity, have also happened in human society. "Redemption of a Dream" is the story of one race of people, sent on a treacherous journey, centuries ago and yet, the essence of the story came to fulfillment right before our eyes, in this generation of our lifetime. This is a true story of the struggle for dignity among the various races, cultures, colors and religions within the largest melting pot on earth. Find out how the new world became a multi-racial, multi-cultural, multi-colored and multi-religious society, even before the Union was formed. This story also chronicles the reflections, recollections and lamentations of the author. Born and raised in the Gold Coast colony, he came to America to fulfill his dream of higher education. He also recalls his childhood experiences during the first-ever transfer of power from colonial-rule to self-rule in the first-ever Democracy formed in black Africa in 1957. The author strikes an interesting similarity between himself and the father of the 44th President of the United States; each came to America in pursuit of his dream of college education and if all goes well; maybe experience the American Dream and let the chips fall where they may. Find out what happened in each of their separate lives in America. Get to the roots of the struggle; find out the true origin of the black American struggle for dignity. Find out how the stone that the builders rejected, became the cornerstone of the finest mansion in the land, build by slave labor, reserved for nobility and eventually occupied by descendants of the same slaves who built it. I grew up in the small canoe-fishing town of Christiansborg, Osu, on the Atlantic coast of West Africa. As a child, I was fortunate enough to attend the schools that the early Missionaries built during the colonial era. Growing up under the shadow of the infamous Christiansborg Castle; I quickly learnt what many in our community already knew. It was common knowledge that our peaceful and picturesque, seaside neighborhood, was one of the most vicious slave market centers in black Africa; next only to the iniquitous Cape Coast Castle; a few hundred miles west of my hometown and the notorious Elmina Castle, further to the west of my hometown. All three colossal castles, still stand today on the sandy shores and in the salt waters of the Atlantic Ocean; each colonial castle, acting as giant window, looking back in retrospect to the ills of the colonial era and the evils of the slavery era. I decided to write this book, "Redemption of a Dream", when America elected its first-ever African American president in almost three centuries. To me, this is the greatest and most significant change that ever happened since the new world was discovered. I wrote this book solely in honor of the brave heroes and legends of "The Struggle" from slavery to Presidency. Thanks for checking out my story and God bless.
Book Synopsis Fighting the Slave Trade by : Sylviane A. Diouf
Download or read book Fighting the Slave Trade written by Sylviane A. Diouf and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2003-10-24 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While most studies of the slave trade focus on the volume of captives and on their ethnic origins, the question of how the Africans organized their familial and communal lives to resist and assail it has not received adequate attention. But our picture of the slave trade is incomplete without an examination of the ways in which men and women responded to the threat and reality of enslavement and deportation. Fighting the Slave Trade is the first book to explore in a systematic manner the strategies Africans used to protect and defend themselves and their communities from the onslaught of the Atlantic slave trade and how they assaulted it. It challenges widely held myths of African passivity and general complicity in the trade and shows that resistance to enslavement and to involvement in the slave trade was much more pervasive than has been acknowledged by the orthodox interpretation of historical literature. Focused on West Africa, the essays collected here examine in detail the defensive, protective, and offensive strategies of individuals, families, communities, and states. In chapters discussing the manipulation of the environment, resettlement, the redemption of captives, the transformation of social relations, political centralization, marronage, violent assaults on ships and entrepĂ´ts, shipboard revolts, and controlled participation in the slave trade as a way to procure the means to attack it, Fighting the Slave Trade presents a much more complete picture of the West African slave trade than has previously been available.

Book excerpt: Profligate London, 1788. Slave ships haunt the seas, bearing human cargos to further the wealth of the rich and destroy the souls of the slave traffickers. Russell Lawrence is an avid skeptic. Captain of the slave ship Barbados, wealthy, and a respected leader, he views religion as a crutch for the weak. But when the debauchery of the slave trade begins to destroy his good morals, his battle becomes more than fighting pirates and mutineers. What if there really is a God? Impressed as a cabin boy, Jack Dunbar sees his forced service on the Barbados as a God-given opportunity to witness Christ to the crew. But his efforts to influence the hardened slavers seems to be doing little good. How is it possible to live as a Christian on the sin-ravaged seas? Can his light shine bright in Africa's dark interior? Back in Grosvenor Square, Elizabeth Grey battles opposition from society and her self-seeking fiance. Her work with John Newton to end the slave trade is being harshly attacked. She faces life branded as a jilter and radical if she stands up for what she believes in. Will she ever glean the strength to call sin by its rightful name? A tale of adventure on the high seas, redemption, and faith. Sin abounds. Is grace enough to conquer doubt and triumph over evil?"
