Book excerpt: This spectacular photographic history traces the parallel development of two two contiguous towns in southern Connecticut: Redding and Easton. Both towns were originally part of the Colonial town of Fairfield and developed as marginal farming communities. Both towns experienced an incipient industrial revolution, which never matured, and both later became retreats for summer visitors and prominent literary figures. In the years after World War II, the two towns evolved into suburban communities. Today, they share not only a common history but also a regional high school. Redding and Easton highlights each period in the development of the two towns. The book emphasizes Georgetown, which continued to be an industrial enclave long after other industry in the town died out. It devotes a chapter to literary figures, such as Mark Twain, Edna Ferber, and Ida Tarbell, who migrated to these rural towns at the end of the nineteenth century and gave them the image of a rural literary retreat. Redding and Easton recognizes the prominent citizens who created a summer colony that attracted the rich and famous from all over the Northeast. The book also stresses the everyday events and special occasions that marked the nature of these towns in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the transnational nature of American cultural production, specifically literature, film, and music, examining how these serve as ways of perceiving the United States and American culture. The volume’s engagement with the reality of transnationalism focuses on material examples that allow for an exploration of concrete manifestations of this phenomenon and trace its development within and outside the United States. Contributors consider the ways in which artifacts or manifestations of American culture have traveled and what has happened to the texts in the process, inviting readers to examine the nature of the transnational turn by highlighting the cultural products that represent and produce it. Emphasis on literature, film, and music allows for nuanced perspectives on the way a global phenomenon is enacted in American texts within the U.S, also illustrating the commodification of American culture as these texts travel. The volume therefore serves as a coherent examination of the critical and creative repercussions of transnationalism, and, by juxtaposing a discussion of creativity with critical paradigms, unveils how transnationalism has become one of the constitutive modes of cultural production in the 21st century.

For decades, Ed and Lorraine Warren hunted down the truth behind the most terrifying supernatural occurrences across the nation... and brought back astonishing evidence of their encounters with the unquiet dead. From the notorious house immortalized in The Amityville Horror to the bone-chilling events that inspired the hit film The Conjuring, the Warrens fearlessly probed the darkness of the world beyond our own, and documented the all-too-real experiences of the haunted and the possessed, the lingering deceased and the vengeful damned. Graveyard chronicles a host of their most harrowing, fact-based cases of ghostly visitations, demonic stalking, heart-wrenching otherworldly encounters, and horrifying comeuppance from the spirit world. If you don’t believe, you will. And whether you read it alone in the dead of night or in the middle of a sunny day, you’ll be forever haunted by its gallery of specters eager to feed on your darkest dread. Don’t miss the Warrens’ latest film “Annabelle” in theaters now.
