Book excerpt: This classic text, reissued to coincide with the 800th anniversary of the City of Liverpool, was originally published in 1967. It is a milestone in the examination of urban arts movements and also provides the starting point for looking at art in Liverpool from the 1960s to the present day and beyond. Based on a survey commissioned by the Bluecoat Society of Arts, the author did something that had never before been done for a single city, and arguably has never been done since. He surveyed the history of the visual arts in the city, looked at the cultural and institutional environment in which they developed, and asked the people of Liverpool how they viewed the visual arts in Liverpool - both in terms of public art and art in enclosed spaces. Willett saw a place with strong traditions in the visual arts, with new developments associated with the city's emergence in the 1960s as a centre for music and poetry. Willett concluded with an agenda for the development of art in Liverpool, and the spirit of this imbued much of the Bluecoat's work in the decades following publication. Revised with a new introduction Art in a City is a marker for the history of the visual arts in Liverpool.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No Arts; No Letters; No Society; and which is worst of all, ... the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short."—Thomas Hobbes (1588–1679) The University of Liverpool pioneered the system, now general among British universities, whereby departments of related disciplines are grouped into "Faculties" with administrative and academic responsibilities and powers. The first Faculty at Liverpool with these commitments was the Arts Faculty, whose initial meeting was held in December 1896. Commemoration of the centenary of the Arts Faculty was marked by the publication of this volume. The book contains reminiscences by former students relating to each decade of the century, and also the reminiscences of a number of former Deans. Essays "informative and critical" have been contributed by recent and present members of staff. They include an account of the buildings occupied by – and in some instances designed for – the Faculty of Arts; a 1950s dialogue by the late Kenneth Muir, the distinguished Shakespeare scholar; and a study of J. M. Mackay, the Highlander who in the 1890s was the prime advocate of a Faculty system. The volume concludes with an essay by Professor Stephen R. L. Clark analyzing the position of Arts today and pointing to the future.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liverpool was the first English provincial city in the eighteenth century to hold art exhibitions. Its mid-nineteenth-century exhibitions were notable for attracting Pre-Raphaelite and foreign artists who both had difficulty in showing their works in London. Their development and eventual collapse reveal the importance of municipal enterprise and official subsidy, of the free market and cash flow, of artistic feuds and the battle of styles in the growth of provincial culture. In 1871 art exhibitions were revived in Liverpool under the control of the City Council, but the new Liverpool Autumn Exhibitions were dominated by the Royal Academy and by the other major London exhibiting societies; they no longer needed to be responsive to the local artistic climate and in fact they were a national and not a local institution. This volume makes available to a wider public a remarkable aspect of Liverpool culture. The index to some fifty exhibition catalogues is complemented by extensive essays by Edward Morris and Emma Roberts and six informative appendices.
