Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first biography of one of Britain's leading lyric songwriters. The Man Who Wrote The Teddy Bears' Picnic tells the story of Irish-born Jimmy Kennedy, one of the last - and arguably the finest - of the professional Tin Pan Alley songwriters of the pre-Beatles 'golden age' of popular song. A fascinating insight into the life of a man who rose from small town beginnings to become for fifty years the lyrical and musical power behind some of the twentieth centurys top popular song entertainers from the days of Variety right up to The Beatles era. Jimmy had something like 30 No. 1 hits to his credit worldwide but is little known outside of music business circles. The book, written by his younger son, ex journalist J.J.Kennedy, sets out to remedy this omission and celebrates his contribution to the genre. Though his romantic ballads like Red Sails in the Sunset continue to be played all round the world, Jimmy is possibly best rembered today for the Cokey Cokey, which he adapted from a Canadian folk song in 1943, and The Teddy Bears' Picnic, which gave magical childrens' words to an old American tune. Well written and easy to read, the book serves as an excellent historical record of pop and is full of facts, observations and authoritative comment on the cut and thrust village that was Tin Pan Alley. It captures the bustle of the place and its almost industrial approach to song creation. It paints a colourful picture of some of the leading characters of the period and exposes the double dealing, greed and downright exploitation prevalent in that world. But the book also creates a romantic mysticism around the characters who dashed around in Denmark street, peddling their talent so often in vain. It transports you to smoky little rooms with music coming from every corridor and it tells the story in black and white, like an old Hollywood movie. Swimming among all these sharks is the unlikely figure of Jimmy Kennedy dapper and charming, modest and artistically fine-tuned, yet steely, resilient and highly commercial. A man who could spot the financial worth of his work, write to order sometimes in lightning-quick time and stand his ground when he knew he had a hit. He was in fact, a one man hit machine. But it wasnt always one man, and the book illuminates the winning partnerships with Michael Carr, Will Grosz et al. One of the key strengths of the book is its nostalgia appeal and has some wonderful anecdotes including recollections from Terry Wogan, Val Doonican and others and non-musical people such as Denis and Margaret Thatcher. All in all, a very intelligent book and one which will become a work of reference for anyone studying the popular music art form of the twentieth century.

Book excerpt: In 1970 the Ontario government prepared a book of All Time and Old Time Favourites to be available to all Senior Citezen Homes, Clubs and Centers, and adult Charitable Institutions for use by the members, residents, auxiliaries and staff. But these contained only the words! In 1973 the Markhaven Committe produced a music book to go along with the word. The songs are pitched a little lower, in a key that is easier for seniors to sing, and tha arrangements are simple enough for most pianists to be able to sit down and play.

Book excerpt: A tour de force of astonishing power and poetry, Circus uses the mystic panorama of a traveling mud show as a metaphor for the neverending cycle of life. Dwarves and roustabouts, clowns and elephants, freaks and puppet shows, snakes and ringmasters, talking beasts and a single elusory beauty all parade before a silently observant child over the course of a single day, engaging him as well as the reader with humor, ribaldry and prophetic wisdom. A testament to the mystery of creation, Circus challenges and inspires. To read it is to celebrate everything majestic and terrible about the world, the firmament and mankind's precarious place in it.

Book excerpt: ". . . sheer subversive bravado . . ." - The New York Times Here are six enthusiastically received history plays by Charles Mee: The Life of George Washington, Full Circle, The War to End War, Vienna: Lusthaus, Gone, and Requiem for the Dead. "The War to End War . . . is engrossing as it spins its arguments, brilliant even in its detours and diversions. . . . When the lights came back up, it was clear Mee had blown the collective mind of the audience. By sheer force of intellect and provocation, he had violated nearly all rules of theater-making and playwriting, in an evening that was never boring. . . . If there were more smart theater like this, more smart people would go to see theater." - theater2k.com "The titillating eeriness of impending doom is exploited so gorgeously in Vienna: Lusthaus that you can understand how civilizations become complicit in their own demise. A . . . seamless amalgam of dance, music and drama is set before World War I in Vienna, where Freud and Hitler overlapped, which it presents in a delicately surreal fashion as a hothouse of sensuality and incipient Nazism." - The New York Times "Through the ages, the tale of the judgment of the chalk circle has been told many times by many authors, but never, ever, not once in a blue moon, has it been told with the abundant imagination and affirmation of [Charles Mee's Full Circle] at Steppenwolf Theatre. . . . This is, as its final stage picture so beautifully shows, a play of hope, one that believes some good may someday come from our turbulent times. Rarely has that hope been expressed with such passion, such strength, such joy." - Chicago Tribune

Book excerpt: This book is a firsthand account of the Vietnam conflict as it unfolded before a midlevel-career military officer. In a first-person account, it does not portend to be a microcosm of that war but, rather, what it was like for one year, at one place to participate and ultimately lead an attack squadron in combat. This an upbeat, anecdote-filled, historically accurate but nonscholarly tale of events seen or taken part in by the author. The book aims for a wide audience that likes aviation, adventure, and insight into leadership. It forcefully brings home the lessons we as a country should learn from such turmoil. This is no memoir to justify the action or inaction of a midlevel manager, but a month-by-month account of controlled mayhem and high humor among professionals in the maelstrom of battle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, country music merged with the rising new fad called ""rock and roll"" to form what would become known as ""Rockabilly."" In short, Rockabilly was fast paced, guitar and bass driven ditties with thundering rhythms. The songs were often less than memorable made up with a conglomeration of silly lyrics and phrases like ""bop,""""shake,""""mama,"" and""go cat!"" Cars, especially Cadillacs, and colors, pink and black, were prevalent in many of the songs. Songs like ""Oobie Doobie,"" ""Ubangi Stomp,"" ""Be Boppin' Baby,"" and ""Rockin' In the Congo"" were common record chart contenders. Many up and coming country crooners would go on to achieve widespread acclaim as names like Presley, Holly and Orbison conquered radio station playlists. They, among others, would become R&R legends. Others like Jack Scott, Boyd Bennett, and Dale Hawkins, found success to a lesser degree in the new genre. It's many of these ""lesser knowns"" that Hepcats & Rockabilly Boys explores. Here are some of their stories...

No one knows exactly what went wrong, but in the blink of an eye, thousands of possible universes all condensed into a single reality . . . . Between a desert and a dried up sea lies the town of Watering Hole, the only oasis for miles and the home of our intrepid heroes Shaani and Xoota. After some rather harrowing adventures in the desert, they are followed home by a swarm of empathic earwigs. As if a psychic bug infestation weren't enough, the town's water supply has suddenly died up. Where there was once fresh water to spare, there is only a trickle of brackish sludge. Theorizing that the water came from a source beyond the desert, Shaani proposes an expedition to re-establish the town's water supply. Xoota, of course, is voted to go with her. Crossing the desert has never been done--and with water in short supply, the task seems impossible. But the ever-helpful Shanni appeals to the town patron Benek, and his love of cryogenically frozen brides, to back the project. What follows is the adventure of a thousand lifetimes.
