Book excerpt: Randal Thomas made it abundantly clear that Jo Ella Masterson would never be anything but a whore at Al's Saloon. But Jo Ella had other plans. Unlike most of the others she could read and when she found a newspaper ad for mail-order-brides, she talked half of Al's girls into finding a husband and settling down as real ladies. When the stagecoach caring the girls overturned on a sharp curve in the road, the girls were battered and bruised. When Harry Jones, the Sheriff of Veda rescues Jo Ella and the girls, they are taken to the doctor and then to the boardinghouse in Veda. Ma Jones, Harry's mother owned the boardinghouse. She'd be looking out for them. But immediately Jo Ella is pulled between two attractive men, Harry the Sheriff and a dangerous looking cattle rancher named Dillon. Dillon was just shy of the law all the time and intriguing. Harry on the other hand was dependable and always straight with her. When a bank robbery goes wrong and Jo Ella is kidnapped, Harry goes after her. Dillon follows and meets up with Harry. Harry informs Dillon he can rescue Jo Ella, because Harry is going after the robbers. Somehow, Jo Ella must choose between the two of them. Jo Ella is tempted by Dillon, but will the straight and narrow Sheriff be her real hero?

This discography documents--in alphabetical order by artist--every commercial country music recording, including unreleased sides, and indicates, as completely as possible, the musicians playing at every session, as well as instrumentation. This massive undertaking encompasses 2,500 artists, 5,000 session musicians, and 10,000 songs. Summary histories of each key record company are also provided, along with a bibliography. The discography includes indexes to all song titles and musicians listed.

Alec's portion is intended as a guide for the clawhammer or frailing banjo player with some previous experience in this style. He stresses the fact that this style of music can be fully learned only from within the oral tradition in which it grew. the instruction included here is meant to provide a review, and not to take the place of qualified teacher. Alec recommends that ...anyone wanting to get this playing right, should find someone in your area who plays and have him/her teach you. Listen to it, watch it, and make it your own. In Section Two, Lisa Schmits presents an extensive collection of 163 jigs, reels, polkas, hornpipes, strathspeys, waltzes, and songs from Ireland, Scotland, the Shetland Islands, Cape Breton, New England and Southern Appalachia for banjo solo. the national origin of each tune is indicated. Lisa offers personal, authoritative settings of a great variety of tunes at an intermediate level. Written in tablature only.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bride Comes to Evensford, a novella first published in 1943, follows a woman from her arrival in a small town (modelled on Bates's native Rushden) to her work for a draper, her marriage to him, her increasing command over the business and the household, and finally to her infatuation with a young man as a widow in her fifties. Written and published in the midst of Bates's work for the Air Ministry, but hearkening back in style and subject matter to his pre-war stories, this is a beautiful study of one woman's life, her hopes and disappointments. Philip Toynbee stated that it had “a fine elegant shape, covering with formidable skill a period of thirty years in only twice as many pages...Mr. Bates is a master of restraint...in a period of over-exuberance."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born into a poor Virginian family, John Treville Latouche (1914-56), in his short life, made a profound mark on America's musical theater as a lyricist, book writer, and librettist. The wit and skill of his lyrics elicited comparisons with the likes of Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, and Cole Porter, but he had too, noted Stephen Sondheim, "a large vision of what musical theater could be," and he proved especially venturesome in helping to develop a lyric theater that innovatively combined music, word, dance, and costume and set design. Many of his pieces, even if not commonly known today, remain high points in the history of American musical theater. "A great American genius" in the words of Duke Ellington, Latouche initially came to wide public attention in his early twenties with his cantata for soloist and chorus, Ballad for Americans (1939), with music by Earl Robinson-a work that swept the nation during the Second World War. Other milestones in his career included the all-black musical fable, Cabin in the Sky (1940), with Vernon Duke; an interracial updating of John Gay's classic, The Beggar's Opera, as Beggar's Holiday (1946), with Duke Ellington; two acclaimed Broadway operas with Jerome Moross: Ballet Ballads (1948) and The Golden Apple (1954); one of the most enduring operas in the American canon, The Ballad of Baby Doe (1956), with Douglas Moore; and the operetta Candide (1956), with Leonard Bernstein and Lillian Hellman. Extremely versatile, he also wrote cabaret songs, participated in documentary and avant-garde film, translated poetry, adapted plays, and much else. Meanwhile, as one of Manhattan's most celebrated raconteurs and hosts, he developed a wide range of friends in the arts, including, to name only a few, Paul and Jane Bowles (whom he introduced to each other), Yul Brynner, John Cage, Jack Kerouac, Frederick Kiesler, Carson McCullers, Frank O'Hara, Dawn Powell, Ned Rorem, Virgil Thomson, Gore Vidal, and Tennessee Williams-a dazzling constellation of diverse artists working in sundry fields, all attracted to Latouche's brilliance and joie de vivre, not to mention his support for their work. This book draws widely on archival collections both at home and abroad, including Latouche's diaries and the papers of Bernstein, Ellington, Moore, Moross, and many others, to tell for the first time, the story of this fascinating man and his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether it's real or imaginary, every child has a secret space, and this remarkable book explores them all. For some it's a treehouse or a hidden spot beneath a bush; for others it's a private psychic refuge--a favorite book, or a dollhouse that becomes a stage for a young imagination. As the more than four dozen pieces collected here reveal, such spaces play a key role in a child's development and retain a symbolic power that resonates throughout our adult lives. No reader will put this book down without experiencing a rush of familiar memories and new insights into that bygone world. Poet Diane Ackerman evokes that "parallel universe behind the eyes / which no one shared, or dare discover"; Paul Brodeur recalls the "fort" where he and his brother defended Cape Cod against invaders in World War II; Nobelist Wole Soyinka offers a poignant verse portrait of Africa's lost children; and Paul West remembers youthful encounters with his eccentric neighbors Edith and Osbert Sitwell. Elsewhere, Robert Coles summons up memories of his first years as a doctor and a wise young patient who taught him a lesson he has never forgotten, and Mary Galbraith shows how childhood loss is transformed into art in Ludwig Bemelmans's classic Madeline. And these are just a few of the gems in a treasury that includes Anne Frank, the controversial photographs of Sally Mann and the crudely eloquent drawings of young South African refugees, clinical case studies and profoundly personal imagery. A perceptive, thought-provoking work for general readers, Secret Spaces of Childhood opens a wonderful window on the world of the young. Elizabeth Goodenough is Lecturer in Comparative Literature, the Residential College, University of Michigan.
