Browder's grandfather was the leader of the American Communist Party. For Browder, going to business school and trying to be a capitalist was a good way to rebel against his liberal parents. After earning his master's of business administration (MBA), however, the standard post business school paths failed to inspire him. His grandfather had spent a lot of time in Eastern Europe and made a name for himself there. Young Browder thought if his grandfather could find fame and distinction there, so could he. Book excerpt: Story Plot Analysis of Bill Browder's Red Notice The book fits the creative nonfiction genre because Browder employs the typically fiction-driven narrative arc with lengthy exposition and a stunning climax. One clue to the genre is Bill's recreation of lengthy conversations, physical descriptions of people and places, and the use of a timepiece to drive tension. Chapter one, "Persona Non Grata," places the reader during a smoky, gaudy area with nothing however a ticker to tick away fifteen hours of detainment. Once Bill concludes his first, high-action chapter, he rewinds time to tell his grandfather's story. The story grinds slowly through Bill's father's life, then Bill's. Excitement only resumes once Bill runs into his first scandal while working at Maxwell Communications. His career trajectory takes him across Europe, and he finally settles in Moscow, Russia. At times, Bill's level of naiveté about Russian corruption defies belief. He cannot conceive of a reason for any official to bribe, cheat, or steal even with evidence of each. He creates a careful persona of the shy, unassuming American with rose-colored glasses who becomes a folk hero. At the same time, he reveals a razor-sharp mind that focuses on a company's vulnerabilities and exploits them for profit. He complains about the oligarchy manipulating Russia's voucher system to get rich; meanwhile, he seems unaware that he has just done the same. Bill is a numbers man, and his numbers make him very wealthy. That is not to say his story rings false. On the contrary, the case against the Interior Ministry, the Russian prison system, tax officials, and Vladimir Putin strikes the reader as incontestable. Browder steps cautiously from one piece of evidence to the next, does not shy away from naming names, and includes enough information for an interested reader to locate the evidence on the Internet. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Hedrick Smith's The Russians, Robert G. Kaiser's Russia: The People and the Power, and David Remnick's Lenin's Tomb comes an eloquent and eye-opening chronicle of Vladimir Putin's Russia, from this generation's leading Moscow correspondents. With the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia launched itself on a fitful transition to Western-style democracy. But a decade later, Boris Yeltsin's handpicked successor, Vladimir Putin, a childhood hooligan turned KGB officer who rose from nowhere determined to restore the order of the Soviet past, resolved to bring an end to the revolution. Kremlin Rising goes behind the scenes of contemporary Russia to reveal the culmination of Project Putin, the secret plot to reconsolidate power in the Kremlin. During their four years as Moscow bureau chiefs for The Washington Post, Peter Baker and Susan Glasser witnessed firsthand the methodical campaign to reverse the post-Soviet revolution and transform Russia back into an authoritarian state. Their gripping narrative moves from the unlikely rise of Putin through the key moments of his tenure that re-centralized power into his hands, from his decision to take over Russia's only independent television network to the Moscow theater siege of 2002 to the "managed democracy" elections of 2003 and 2004 to the horrific slaughter of Beslan's schoolchildren in 2004, recounting a four-year period that has changed the direction of modern Russia. But the authors also go beyond the politics to draw a moving and vivid portrait of the Russian people they encountered -- both those who have prospered and those barely surviving -- and show how the political flux has shaped individual lives. Opening a window to a country on the brink, where behind the gleaming new shopping malls all things Soviet are chic again and even high school students wonder if Lenin was right after all, Kremlin Rising features the personal stories of Russians at all levels of society, including frightened army deserters, an imprisoned oil billionaire, Chechen villagers, a trendy Moscow restaurant king, a reluctant underwear salesman, and anguished AIDS patients in Siberia. With shrewd reporting and unprecedented access to Putin's insiders, Kremlin Rising offers both unsettling new revelations about Russia's leader and a compelling inside look at life in the land that he is building. As the first major book on Russia in years, it is an extraordinary contribution to our understanding of the country and promises to shape the debate about Russia, its uncertain future, and its relationship with the United States.

Book excerpt: "A group of American patriots, all former military, are looking for a way to get their number one choice, Senator Ben Corn, elected president. Corn is a telegenic, perfect candidate-yet harbors secrets that threaten him. The group's goal is to implement their own foreign policy and fundamentally restructure American society. Essential to this scheme is Greta Webb, a sophisticated and beautiful CIA agent who is an expert on how global dark money flows, not to mention skilled in lethal hand-to-hand combat. To achieve their goals, they form dangerous alliances. One is with a woman who manages the largest, and most corrupt, private pool of capital that has ever existed. And another with the brilliant, ruthless founder of Russia's most successful private military company: a mercenary's mercenary, who has ties to Vladimir Putin. He has his eye on Greta Webb-and while she would be wise to avoid him at all costs, she cannot. Journeying across the globe from New York to Washington to Middle Eastern war zones to wine cellars in the French countryside to Putin's private restaurant in St. Petersburg, the group of Americans become enmeshed in this underground world. And as they discover the secret of the dark money's pool's success-which involves manipulating the markets to rake in billions of dollars-they come into ever increasing danger. Ultimately the team of Americans must decide whether their ultimate objectives are worth the cost of ruthlessly sacrificing not just a few but potentially many human lives. Brilliantly told and filled with jaw-dropping action and unforgettable characters, Undermoney offers a savage look at the secret lives of the world's richest people"--

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking historical study reveals the shocking infiltration of Soviet spies in America—and the top-secret cryptography program that caught them. Only in 1995 did the United States government officially reveal the existence of the super-secret Venona Project. For nearly fifty years American intelligence agents had been decoding thousands of Soviet messages, uncovering an enormous range of espionage activities carried out against the United States during World War II by its own allies. This extraordinary book is the first to examine the Venona messages—documents of unparalleled importance for our understanding of the history and politics of the Stalin era and the early Cold War years. Hidden in a former girls’ school in the late 1940s, Venona Project cryptanalysts, linguists, and mathematicians attempted to decode thousands of intercepted Soviet intelligence telegrams. When they cracked the Soviet code, analysts uncovered information of powerful significance: the first indication of Julius Rosenberg’s espionage efforts; references to the espionage activities of Alger Hiss; proof of Soviet infiltration of the Manhattan Project; evidence that spies had reached the highest levels of the U.S. State and Treasury Departments; indications that more than three hundred Americans had assisted in the Soviet theft of American secrets; and confirmation that the Communist party of the United States was consciously and willingly involved in Soviet espionage against America. Drawing not only on the Venona papers but also on newly opened Russian and U. S. archives, John Earl Haynes and Harvey Klehr provide the most rigorously documented analysis ever written on Soviet espionage in the early Cold War years.
