Download or read book Yorick's World written by Peter Caws and published by University of California Presson Demand. This book was released on 1993 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These essays are the work of a genial, literate mind exploring a wide range of issues mainly centered on the philosophy of science and epistemology, but including considerations of literature, language, and social practice. Caws's work, in general, represents an independent and alternative current in the philosophy of science, one which is informed by a broader conception of scientific thought and activity than are the usual approaches of either the traditional logical-empiricists or the more recent post-positivists. And he has a knack for deflating the latest fashionable claims early in the game, even before fashion has set in."--Marx Wartofsky, Editor, "The Philosophical Forum"

Book Synopsis Applied Grammatology by : Gregory L. Ulmer
Download or read book Applied Grammatology written by Gregory L. Ulmer and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1984. In Applied Grammatology, Gregory Ulmer provides an extraordinary introduction to the third, "applied" phase of grammatology, the "science of writing," outlined by Jacques Derrida in Of Grammatology. Ulmer looks to the later experimental works of Derrida (beginning with Glas and continuing through Truth in Painting and The Post Card). In these, he discovers a critical methodology radically different from the deconstruction for which Derrida is known. At the same time, he finds the source of a new pedagogy for all the humanities, one based on grammatology and appropriate to the era of audiovisual communications in which we live. Detractors of Derrida often accuse him of superficial wordplay and of using images and puns as nonfunctional subversions of academic conventions. Ulmer argues that there is, in fact, a fully developed use of homonyms in Derrida's style, which produces its own distinctive knowledge and insight. Derrida's experiments with images, moreover—his expansion of descriptions of everyday objects such as umbrellas, matchboxes, and post cards into cognitive models—serve to reveal a simplicity underlying intellectual discourse, which could be used to eliminate the gap separating the general public from specialists in cultural studies. Comparing the stylistic innovations of Derrida with Jacques Lacan's use of puns and diagrams, with the German performance artist Joseph Beuys's demonstration of models, and with the "montage writing" of the films of Sergei Eisenstein, Ulmer explores the possibility of deriving a postmodernist pedagogy from Derrida's texts. The first study to suggest the full potential of the program available in Derrida's writings, Applied Grammatology is also the first outline of a Derridean alternative to deconstructionism. With its shift away from Derrida's philosophical studies to his experimental texts, Ulmer's book aims to inaugurate a new movement in the American adaptation of contemporary French theory.

Book Synopsis A Short Sad Book by : George Bowering
Download or read book A Short Sad Book written by George Bowering and published by Transmontanus. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. With an Introduction by Erin Moure and an Afterword by the author. These days, Canada is a heavyweight of world fiction, boasting some of the gaudiest names in the literary firmament, its schools graduating great writers by the frontlist. It's easy to forget that it was not always so. Forty years ago, George Bowering saw a country still struggling to find itself in its books, and decided to write A SHORT SAD BOOK about it. Did he know he was writing if not The Great Canadian Novel something like it? Originally published in 1977, A SHORT SAD BOOK has plenty of what you'd expect any Great Canadian Novel to have plenty of: geography, love, loons crying in the wilderness, lots of beavers. There's a romance between Sir John A. and Evangeline, a Purdy good detective named Al hot on the trail of whoever killed Tom Thompson (yes, that one), terror in the form of white rabbits from the Black Mountain, Riel, Dumont, postmodernism (there's even a character named "George Bowering" ), and cameos by Gertrude Stein as the muse, Frank Mahovlich as the travel agent, and Jack McClelland as himself. Poet/translator Erin Moure provides an introduction for this new edition, peeling back just enough layers of Bowering's short but incredibly rich novel to show even more layers underneath. Bowering's own Afterword provides additional context. "A SHORT SAD BOOK is a delightful picaresque romp that borrows freely in matters of style from the early 20th- century American experimentalist Gertrude Stein: the spirit of Canadian literature is chased up, down and across the country, sought in vain, with both the author and his readers learning much about what it means to be Canadian in the process...This book fairly brims over with invention, from its distinctive spelling and punctuation to its hunger to define, almost by lack of definition, this nation...The casual style, jokes and the book's compact length all conspire to seduce the reader into an impression of levity. Underneath such apparent levity, however, lie many themes as important to Canada today as they were 40 years ago."--James W. Woods, Vancouver Sun
