Book excerpt: Shortly after first reading La Porte étroite the English critic Edmund Gosse wrote a letter of warmest praise to its author, Andre Gide, inaugurating an intimate correspondence that was to continue for nearly 20 years. At the time the exchange began, Gosse was a powerful and venerated man of letters in Great Britain who was able to make or destroy a writer's reputation, Gide, who was then just beginning to be known, was eager to obtain wider recognition, especially among English-speaking readers. Friendship between the two men grew rapidly, stimulated by their similar interests and common backgrounds. Eighty-eight of the total of about one hundred letters exchanged are included in this volume.
