Book excerpt: Ce document offre une synthèse des principaux résultats concernant les caractéristiques microstructurales et les propriétés relatives à la durabilité des bétons à hautes performances (BHP), acquis dans le cadre de différentes études et recherches, en particulier dans celui du projet national " BHP 2000 " et de projets de recherche dirigés par le LCPC. La durabilité concernée dans ce document a trait essentiellement à la prévention de la corrosion des armatures du béton armé et des dégradations du béton dues aux cycles de gel-dégel en présence ou non de sels. Quelques exemples sont en outre donnés relativement au comportement en laboratoire vis-à-vis d'autres agressions (attaque acide et alcali-réaction). La durabilité a été étudiée sur des échantillons de matériaux issus d'éprouvettes testées en conditions de laboratoire, d'éléments de structure, ou encore d'ouvrages réels exposés à des conditions naturelles variées. Tous les résultats indiquent pour les BHP une durabilité " potentielle " élevée et, en particulier, une très bonne résistance aux agents agressifs d'origine externe (la pénétration des chlorures et la carbonatation sont limitées à une zone très superficielle) et interne. Le meilleur comportement des BHP, mis en évidence en laboratoire et in situ par rapport à des formules plus classiques, fournit des arguments solides pour prescrire des BHP en vue d'assurer une durée de vie plus longue aux ouvrages en béton armé (ou précontraint) et/ou éviter bon nombre de pathologies (alcali-réaction, lixiviation par les liquides chimiquement agressifs, etc).

Book excerpt: La durabilite au gel du beton a haute performance (80-100 MPa) ete etudiee en soumettant 44 melanges de beton a des cycles de gel-degel dans l'eau (norme ASTM C666, procedure A) et a des essais d'ecaillage en presence de sels de deglacage (norme ASTM C672). Le programme d'essais a ete concu de maniere a analyser l'effet du rapport eau/liant, du type de liant, du tpe de gros granulat, de la longueur de la cure et du facteur d'espacement des bulles d'air. Les resultats demontrent que la valeur limite du rapport eau/liant, en dessous de laquelle l'air entraine n'est plus necessaire pour proteger le beton contre les cycles de gel dans l'eau, peut etre usperieure a 0,30 dans certains cas, mais qu'elle est plus generalement inferieure a 0,25. Cette valeur limite est surtout influencee par les caracteristiques du ciment, puisque le ciment de type 30 a permis de produire des betons nettement plus durables. Les essais d'ecaillage en laboratoire ont demontre que pour des rapports eau/liant inferieurs a 0,30, la resistance aux sels de deglacage est generalement tres bonne, quel que soit le type de ciment, la teneur en fumee de silice ou le facteur d'espacement des bulles d'air du beton.

La mise en œuvre des nouvelles normes (EN 206-1) relatives à la production de bétons en centrale et sur chantier ouvre la porte d’une spécification des performances à atteindre par un béton donné au lieu d’imposer comme auparavant, selon les conditions d’usage, la composition du matériau mis en œuvre. Il est alors nécessaire de développer des procédures permettant de caractériser les performances d’un béton autrement que par l’analyse de sa composition. Il s’agit essentiellement, à partir d’un mécanisme de vieillissement donné du matériau, de déterminer les propriétés physico-chimiques mises en jeu, d’établir un lien entre celles-ci et la composition du béton et enfin de définir des essais (souvent accélérés) permettant de caractériser le matériau. Les méthodologies, fondées sur le concept de performance équivalente, consistent à montrer qu’un béton se comporte au moins aussi bien qu’un béton de référence, pour chacune des actions environnementales envisagées par la norme : carbonatation, pénétration des chlorures, gel/dégel, lixiviation, attaques sulfatiques externes. Une approche performantielle existe déjà pour le gel/dégel. Les études menées ont permis de mettre en évidence des modes opératoires d’essais représentatifs et des indicateurs associés suffisamment sensibles pour qualifier des bétons exposés à la carbonatation, à la pénétration des chlorures et à la lixiviation. Grâce à plusieurs dispositifs expérimentaux d’essais de vieillissement et à l’utilisation d’un modèle numérique, l’étude sur les attaques sulfatiques externes a permis de comprendre les principaux aspects du mécanisme de dégradation par les sulfates et de proposer des solutions pour l’adaptation des compositions de béton destinés à ces environnements. Les méthodologies proposées visent ainsi à passer d’une obligation de moyens à une obligation de résultats, autrement dit de laisser un degré de liberté supplémentaire dans la conception, pour le même objectif de durabilité et une meilleure maîtrise de la durabilité potentielle du matériau.
