Book Synopsis Paul’s Concept of Justification by : Richard Kingsley Moore
Download or read book Paul’s Concept of Justification written by Richard Kingsley Moore and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek family of words characterizing the doctrine of "justification by faith" (as it is known in English) is most prominent in the writings of the Apostle Paul. It was this doctrine that lay at the heart of the sixteenth-century Reformation; Martin Luther and his followers considered it to be at the very center of the gospel. Protestants came to understand "justification" differently from the Catholic Church they had left. Instead of the Catholic "realist" view, in which God makes a sinner righteous, they came to a "forensic" understanding, by which God, as judge, declares a sinner righteous. During the nineteenth century a third, "relational" view began to emerge: it viewed "justification" as God's gift of a right relationship to a sinner. This monograph examines Paul's concept from three perspectives: the New Testament data; the way the doctrine has developed historically; and how the doctrine has been expressed in English translations of the Scriptures. The author concludes that it is the relational view that most accurately depicts Paul's concept of "justification."

Book Synopsis Both Judge and Justifier by : James B. Prothro
Download or read book Both Judge and Justifier written by James B. Prothro and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul often says that God "justifies" people in Christ, but what does that mean God does? The language appears legal, but many other interpretations have been suggested. Beginning from the use of this language in Judaism and early Christianity, James B. Prothro investigates biblical legal conflicts and the terminology of "justification" in Paul's letters to determine what it means for Paul to say that God as judge is the "justifier" of those who trust in Christ. --! Book Synopsis Paul's Letter to the Romans by : Arland J. Hultgren

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on his own translation from the Greek, Hultgren walks readers through Romans verse by verse, illuminating the text with helpful comments, probing into major puzzles, and highlighting the letter's most inspiring features. He also demonstrates the forward-looking, missional character of Paul's epistle -- written, as Hultgren suggests, to introduce Roman Christians to the major themes of Paul's theology and to inspire in them both confidence in the soundness of his teaching and support for his planned missionary efforts in Spain.
Book Synopsis Paul, the Law, and Justification by : Colin G. Kruse
Download or read book Paul, the Law, and Justification written by Colin G. Kruse and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Martin Luther drew a strong parallel between the religion of medieval Catholicism and the religion of first-century Judaism against which his hero, Paul, contended. Luther asserted that both taught that salvation was earned by works of merit. E.P. Sanders challenged Luther's view of Judaism in his landmark work Paul and Palestinian Judaism (1977). Judaism was not in principle a religion in which salvation was earned through obeying the law: it was a religion based upon God's election and grace. The debate which Sanders initiated continues, issuing in a flood of articles and monographs. Dr. Kruse insists, however, that the issues raised in the debate must not be allowed to set the agenda. Instead, he takes the loner route of inductive exegesis, allowing each of Paul's letters to speak for itself before attempting a synthesis of Paul's teaching on the law and justification. He faces squarely and honestly the problems which Paul's attitude to the law raises, and he proposes thoroughly researched and considered solutions. His book is an important contribution to the ongoing debate.
