Book Synopsis Adventures In Recreational Mathematics (In 2 Volumes) by : David Singmaster
Download or read book Adventures In Recreational Mathematics (In 2 Volumes) written by David Singmaster and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Singmaster believes in the presentation and teaching of mathematics as recreation. When the Rubik's Cube took off in 1978, based on thinly disguised mathematics, he became seriously interested in mathematical puzzles which would provide mental stimulation for students and professional mathematicians. He has not only published the standard mathematical solution for the Rubik's cube still in use today, but he has also become the de facto scribe and noted chronicler of the recreational mathematics puzzles themselves.Dr Singmaster is also an ongoing lecturer of recreational mathematics around the globe, a noted mechanical puzzle collector, owner of thousands of books related to recreational mathematical puzzles and the 'go to' source for the history of individual mathematical puzzles. This set of two books provides readers with an adventure into previously unknown origins of ancient puzzles, which could be traced back to their Medieval, Chinese, Arabic and Indian sources. The puzzles are fully described, many with illustrations, adding interest to their history and relevance to contemporary mathematical concepts. These are musings of a respected historian of recreational mathematics.

Book Synopsis Distinguished Figures in Descriptive Geometry and Its Applications for Mechanism Science by : Michela Cigola
Download or read book Distinguished Figures in Descriptive Geometry and Its Applications for Mechanism Science written by Michela Cigola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book consists of chapters that focus specifically on single figures that worked on Descriptive Geometry and also in Mechanisms Sciences and contain biographical notes, a survey of their work and their achievements, together with a modern interpretation of their legacy. Since Vitruvius in ancient times, and with Brunelleschi in the Renaissance, the two disciplines began to share a common direction which, over the centuries, took shape through less well-known figures until the more recent times in which Gaspard Monge worked. Over the years, a gap has been created between Descriptive Geometry and Mechanism Science, which now appear to belong to different worlds. In reality, however, there is a very close relationship between the two disciplines, with a link based on extremely solid foundations. Without the theoretical foundations of Geometry it would not be possible to draw and design mechanical parts such as gears, while in Kinematics it would be less easy to design and predict the reciprocal movements of parts in a complex mechanical assembly.
Book Synopsis Ernest Irving Freese's "Geometric Transformations": The Man, The Manuscript, The Magnificent Dissections! by : Greg N Frederickson
Download or read book Ernest Irving Freese's "Geometric Transformations": The Man, The Manuscript, The Magnificent Dissections! written by Greg N Frederickson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Everyone interested in geometric dissections, and this kind of puzzles, either mathematically or recreationally will embrace this publication. But also the readers interested in the history and certainly those who became curious about this mystery man and his manuscript, after reading Frederickson’s 2006 book, will be fully satisfied with this respectful reproduction eventually made available for a general public.'European Mathematical Society'Ernest Irving Freese's Geometric Transformations does not just uncover a mathematical gem. It is also a piece of art and a mind-puzzling set of ingenious dissections done by a master of architectural drawings and amateur mathematician. It is a practical book that shows the beauty of dissection and how we can get from a polygon to another by cutting it to pieces and recollect them in some special way. The book is written in a very elegant style, and nicely presented. Freese’s manuscript was photographed and wasn’t altered in any way — this preserved its beauty. Freese’s drawing shows ingenuity and it shows how meticulous he was. For those people who are interested in geometry or in geometric dissections and for those who admire puzzles and recreational mathematics this book is a must.' (See Full Review)MAA ReviewsA geometric dissection is a cutting of a geometric figure (such as a regular polygon, or a star, or a cross) into pieces that we can rearrange to form another geometric figure. The best dissections are beautiful and possess economy (few pieces), symmetry, or hingeability. They are often challenging to discover.Ernest Irving Freese was an architect who lived and worked in Los Angeles until his death in 1957. Shortly before he passed away, he completed a 200-page manuscript on geometric dissection, the first book-length treatment on that subject. Freese included elegant drawings of dissections that were both original and clever. After his death the manuscript lay forgotten in his former house until Greg Frederickson set in motion its recovery in 2003. What a treat that it was rescued!Frederickson's book sketches a history of geometric dissections and a biography of Freese, followed by a refurbished copy of Freese's manuscript interleaved with a commentary that highlights Freese's major contributions as well as singular improvements made by Frederickson and others after Freese. This book introduces Freese and his creations to math puzzle enthusiasts, by way of his engaging manuscript, his wild adventures, and his lovely dissections. Frederickson also includes remarkable designs that improve on Freese's work, and packs this book with nifty illustrations and tidbits that may well leave you speechless!

Book Synopsis Visual Reasoning with Diagrams by : Amirouche Moktefi
Download or read book Visual Reasoning with Diagrams written by Amirouche Moktefi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-07-08 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logic, the discipline that explores valid reasoning, does not need to be limited to a specific form of representation but should include any form as long as it allows us to draw sound conclusions from given information. The use of diagrams has a long but unequal history in logic: The golden age of diagrammatic logic of the 19th century thanks to Euler and Venn diagrams was followed by the early 20th century's symbolization of modern logic by Frege and Russell. Recently, we have been witnessing a revival of interest in diagrams from various disciplines - mathematics, logic, philosophy, cognitive science, and computer science. This book aims to provide a space for this newly debated topic - the logical status of diagrams - in order to advance the goal of universal logic by exploring common and/or unique features of visual reasoning.

Download or read book MATHEMATICAL RECREATIONS AND ESSAYS written by W.W. ROUSE BALL and published by Holistence Publications. This book was released on with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is divided into two parts. The first part consists of seven chapters, in which are included var-ious problems and amusements of the kind usually called mathematical recreations. The questions discussed in the first of these chapters are connected with arithmetic; those in the second with geometry; and those in the third relate to mechanics. The fourth chapter contains an account of some miscellaneous problems which involve both num-ber and situation; the fifth chapter contains a concise account of magic squares; and the sixth and seventh chapters deal with some unicursal problems. The second part consists of five chapters, which are mostly histori-cal. They deal respectively with three classical problems in geometry—namely, the duplication of the cube, the trisection of an angle, and the quadrature of the circle—astrology, the hypotheses as to the nature of space and mass, and a means of measuring time.

Download or read book Manipulating the Sun written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-12-18 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume puts two biblical miracles - the Sun reversing its course in II Kings 20:8-11/Isaiah 38:8 (Horologium Ahaz) and the Sun standing still in Joshua 10:12 -, in the early modern period centre stage. We pay special attention to the development of related imagery, their role as anti-Copernican arguments (in text and image), their reception, their treatment in the mathematical sciences, and their various cultural layers, with a focus on the history of art and the history of science in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The material discussed spreads from rather prosaic mathematical reflections to highly appealing visual representations of the two miracles.
